turbo noise

Featured Replies

when im driving my 86 gl10 turbowagon, at about 3800 rpms and up, in every gear, it will squeal pretty badly.(not belt, im guessin the turbo) its basically only when accelerating, when i release the accelerator, it goes away. so does my turbo need rebuilt? any other options? other than that the car runs and drives great!

thanks,

tyler.

I am going to talk out of my rear here for a second. From what I understand generaly when a turbo needs rebuilt it will spit oil into the exhaust so if you are loseing oil or have smoke from the exhaust all the time I would say yes. Otherwise I would say no however I don't really know what I am talking about and it could still be the problem. I am only replying becase I feel sorry for you and your lack of replys.

Its possible for the turbo to go bad and squeal like a stuck pig without blowing smoke.. but its really hard to pinpoint noises over the internet:(

How about this for a test, wire or prop the waste gate full open. The turbo will still spin but the turbine will not get up to the speed it normally does.

If it still makes the same noise start thinking --well ..release bearing maybe??

i guess ill just have to fidget arround with it as usual, i was just hoping that this was a common "gateway" problem before total meltdown. ok well im off to "play." thanks anyway.

the squealling could possibly be a boost leak. Mine had a whine as it spooled up, and it turned out to be a boost leak.

subarurx - how loud of a cry are you talking about? now that i think of it, that does sound like it could be a possibility. afterall it is only during high boost and the turbo does seem to be doing fine. tomorrow i will tear it apart and check all hoses and fittings, hopefully that is the problem, that noise is driving me batty. :D

also the car will be taking a long distance trip and if we plan to be cruizin on the interstate, i really intend not to have that noise.

also it does seem to have a leak somewhere, intake or vacume, ill do some tests later, but hopefully. ill give it a shot.
