  1. Ahh cruise control makes sense. I bet thats what a ton of that junk is. Switches on the brakes and that goofy vaccum box on the accelrator. Yea not hooking that up. Progress is slow but steady I am trying to work on it everyday so I can get it done before I am out of school in two weeks. At this rate I should be able to get it at least running by that point. Thanks again I could not have even gotten this far without your help.
  2. The pedal box does not fit. Not even by a long shot. After several minutes with the sawzaw grinder and hammer it did fit. Still isn't bolted in yet though. Here is the dash all apart, How does it go back together... I dunno I will figure that out later. This car is an electrical nightmare. I did manage to wrestle the transmission in and the drivetrain rear of it should be good to go. But the front axles are still giving me trouble and there is that whole engine part that I haven't put in yet. We found this neat knife under the seat that I guess the previos owner forgot about I have been useing it to cut out insulation that is in my way. Here are my friends cars that helped me a ton this weekend hopefully soon I will get to have my car sitting next to theirs. Few questions for you guys. The Switch on top of the clutch pedal has no place to plug into. What does this switch do and is it important to have it in? I assume it is the starter cancel and so is not nessicary for the car to work am I correct? Also do the front axles go on only one way? I can't get the pins to go back in and am wondering if rotating them 180 degrees would help? I am sure I forgot to ask something. This project has turned into a little more than a headgasket but I think when it is done I will have a vast amount of knowledge about how this car works and hopefully a car that runs. If not I am only out 922$ Thanks for all the help you guys have given me especialy calebz.
  3. I am swapping transmisions on my XT turbo from an automatic to manual. In order to do this you need to replace the front axles. Wheels come off and then the spindel nut is removed and I take a big ol hammer and get the old ones out. Great I think just stick the new ones in right? Wrong They wont fit and since I don't know the fancy names people make up for everything I just post pictures. I doubt I can fit a transmission in that gap. You can see the precision alingment tool I have been useing but I can't get any leverage on them from this side. Getting the others out was easy but getting these in is not. You can see how the shaft isn't pokeing through the caliper so I can't just put the nut on it to pull it through that way. Thanks caleb for helping me get these parts. So is there some tip or trick to getting them back in? Or do I just need a bigger hammer?

  6. And why did you not mention this to me??? I would have gone just for those chicks. I have a good bud with a WRX and he loves to get his hands dirty just as much as I do but he just can't pull his whole engine apart just for fun. Don't write off all the newer guys. A few of them know what they are talking about. Whenever subaru Challenge is I want to go with my scoob and represent the old school you should go too. I am unsure of when it is though. VV Thats cool just email me whenver. Maybe I will have a running car by that time who knows. Heads are back on cams this weekend if wether permits then I have to figure out how to time it. VVVV It was in the parking lot of texas motor speedway. Largest gathering of subarus outside of the factory was what they said at the event. Cobb brought out cone basher and she was a beast and the only old school I saw was an SVX but that doesn't really count.
  7. Your workspace looks about like mine. All these people post picture of engines on engine stands and cars in garages forget that. Good to see someone is doing things cheap like me.
  8. The one time it snowed in dallas this year my subaru had to not be running. Curse you texas weather. It melted all by noon anyways.
  9. No I understand what you are saying I figured it was going to be like that but I just wanted to see if there might be some super secret trick to get them back together. Guess not though. Oil soaked hands AHOY!
  10. Thank you for your advice. After some banging and some curseing they came out. However now I am haveing trouble putting them back together. I will try again tomorow and see what I can do. Once I fill them with oil and put the spring and other thing in at a certain point it refuses to compress anymore. I am guessing this is because the oil in the bottom won't compress since well that is what oil does. Do I have to mess with the little ball to get some of it to come out and then keep pushing it down?

I can see them and compress them but they don't come out and I can't pull on them in anyway.
  12. Syphon: Yes I am a goon same name as on the awful fourms. Me and my dad managed with the tractor block and it is a cast iron bohemoth. I bet with enough curseing and shoveing we can get her out but I don't know if it will be worth the trouble.
  13. Nice score. I saw a WRX turbo going for 100$ on nasioc. Then I remember I need to make the car run before I can start haveing fun with it.
  14. Well I found the ones from the car they were hideing in the trunk. He put them in a black bag next to the jack so I assumed it was for all the jack levers and stuff. It had the lifters and a bunch of bolts. Sorry to make you go through the trouble of looking for them. I really do apreciate it. Forkspear: I can't imagine it weighing that much being aluminum and all. I will see about taking it out to clean it up.

Now I can't decide if I want to pull the block or not. It would be alot easyer to clean it off with it out and on a workbench. I guess I will next time I get out there to work on it. edit: Can two people lift the block out?
  16. Awesome I am so glad to hear I won't be shelling out 600$ for a handful of parts. I am begining to gather parts for the tranny swap but whenever I say tranny swap my dad says wrx and I ask him how in the hell I am going to afford that. I am going to do it in spite of him though. Those lifters would be awesome but I am not sure if I will need them just yet I am talking with the guy who I bought the car from and they might be lieing around somewhere in the car that I didn't look. Edit: The paint and wire looms came with the car which is kinda cool rally yellow and all.
  17. If anyone remembers I bought a Subaru XT off ebay a while ago. Between school work and hanging out I have been working on it. The texas winter we have been haveing has been nice and I have gotten alot done. In two days I had the entire engine apart and down to a short block sitting on the end of the transmission. It had obviosly been sitting for awhile and needed to be cleaned. The valves had alot of carbon deposites on them and there was this white crap in all the water channels that I had to clean out. The block still needs some work. The car was missing 4 valve lifters that I will have to get from a junkyard since they are 55$ a peice from the dealership. Once I get her running It will be time to see about getting rid of that stupid automatic transmission. This is my first project of this magnitude if you don't count the tractor which was more of my dads project anyways(and he still isn't finished with it). It has really taught me alot but I know I still have lots to learn. And for the pictures http://falenseraf.lardpirates.com/Subaru/ Picture 29 is the casulties of the evening when we were taking it apart. One 12mm socket a 17 mm and a 3/8 to 1/2 drive converter. None of them were craftsman. Now for my question. Half of them don't move when i push on them with my hand and ooze dirty oil when lightly compressed with the vice. Now theses little guys are 75$ each from the dealership and I would need 8 X 75$ makes 600$. That is more than I paid for the car! is there anyway I can take them apart and clean them fix them get new ones cheaper? If I have to drop 600$ on these stupid things I am going to cry.

  19. I have the heads pulled off my EA82T right now and I am thinking about maybe trying this. Lowering the compresion on a turbocharged engine usualy causes an increase in power becase it allows you to run much more boost which makes up for the lower compresion. I don't understand how changeing the shape of the chamber would increase the resistance but I don't know that much about engines. I would like to hear others feedback before I consider this.
  20. Wow I am really glad I saw this thread. Just pulled the heads on my Ea82t tonight and saw the cracks. I was already looking on ebay for some remanufactured heads. I am wondering though the cracks can be seen inside the intake and exhaust manifolds just hairlines though. Is this still ok? I will get some pictures tomorow to try and show what is going on.
  21. Awesome I need to take notes on that intercooler I want to do a front mount in my XT turbo . Did you just use radiator hose and PVC for the tubing? Did you seal it in anyway? Edit: on second look it seems like you used just PVC. Is that about the only option or just the cheapest one?
  22. I am going to talk out of my rear here for a second. From what I understand generaly when a turbo needs rebuilt it will spit oil into the exhaust so if you are loseing oil or have smoke from the exhaust all the time I would say yes. Otherwise I would say no however I don't really know what I am talking about and it could still be the problem. I am only replying becase I feel sorry for you and your lack of replys.

  24. Wow this seems like it is going to be alot harder than I thought. I can't do much right now gota wait till I get the car but I have about 5 junkyards that tell me they have the tranny. Junkyard dogs worked sapriseingly well. I will keep you guys posted on how everything pans out.
  25. So I got this . I haven't even picked it up yet but I am heading down there saturday. So once I get the head back on I want to get rid of that auto trans. What parts will I need. Obviosly the transmission and shift linkage. Clutch master cylender? Flywheel? Sorry if I am retarted but I never really have attempted a project like this before.
