EA2EJ... Carbureted?

Featured Replies

OK, I saw a car in the for sale section that looked like it had a CARBED EJ22 in it.

The writeup for EA2EJ assumes swapping over to MPFI, what changes in the swap if carburetion is used? Is it a different intake manifold? What carb is used? How much does it simplify the wiring?

You trade simplicity in wiring for some custom fab work - the manifold has to be custom, and you have to add a distributor from an 80's Ford Escort to the back of the passenger side head. EJ22E's have a spot for a distributor back there as they were carbureted in some European countries.

Basically, you hook up the distributor to the stock EA coil, and you plumb in the EA oil pressure sender. That's about the extent of the wireing because the EA starter is used.

Personally, I feel that using a carb defeats half the benefit of the EJ22 - it's simple and rugged MPFI system is part of what gives it excelent economy and power. It also will run at severe angles which a Weber will have problems with. The MPFI system is much more adaptable to exhaust and intake mods, cam changes, and even adding a turbo - carbs are finicky about even the slightest changes as they have no feedback loop to give them information on current fuel mixture requirements - they have to be retuned seasonally..... just a pain in the neck really. I'll take a good, simple FI system anyday over a Weber.

And the coil wire from the carb is re-used. And you need custom spark plug wires which is pretty easy if you know the right guys. Jerry DeMoss would likely make you a set for a fee. He made the set for the brat in the classifieds you are talking about.

I ask because I like keeping options open. And I already have a Weber carb, anyway. :)

This is all really preliminary anyway, since I don't even have a motor yet.

sell the carb, swap to FI.

yes, it can be done. but even if perfectly tuned, I HIGHLY doubt you'll ever see as much power as with the stock FI. but perfect tuning doesn't come easy, and it'll involve quite a bit of fabrication.

the FI will have gobs of power from the moment you turn the key. and if you have problems, it has some capabilities to tell you what is wrong via the CEL.

It will from the time the car has its oxygen sensor fully warmed up. I fully agree with you the EFI is the way to go if you can do the wiring but the time factor is incredible here. Simple is going to win a lot of guys and gals votes here. You pop the hood on this brat and there's practically nothing except an engine block in there. I have been SERIOUSLY contemplating taking my EFI out of my 2.2 swapped wagon and making it carb! Thats gotta tell you something is right with this setup.

i'm running a EJ22 as a carby & dizzy....admitedly i'm running lpg so that was the only way i could do it easyily.....but ive had no problems with the carb an dizzy setup that weren't my own fault....i'd say go for it....lol an how many ppl can say they have another whole ignition and fuel system wrapped in rags in the back just incase...hahaha try that with fuel injection

Easily done. Just carry an extra sensor for each of the major units, an extra ECU, and a DMM. (and your brain). Takes about the same amount of space and you will probably never use any of it.
