Say I have a 1984 4wd wagon... can anyone tell me if the front half shafts/ cv axels from a 1984 2wd auto trans wagon be used in my 4wd wagon???

It can be used but the 2wd axle isn't as strong as a 4wd axle

yes for sure, i have used two wheel drive axels on a 4wd car. and i believe craig to be right about strength. if you look up part #s the axels are different for 2 and 4 wheel drive. but it will fit.

the difference is the size of the joints.

The difference is not just the size of the joints - the 4WD shaft is 2mm larger in diameter. Joint is also bigger as noted above.
