Fuel light and gauge issues...

Featured Replies

I have done a search and read that a dose of Techron can possibly solve some of my problems. I will try it but my problem is a little more complex. Not only does my fuel light come on at any time (just after fuel up) but at any time my gauge can drop to below "E". A mile or so down the road the light will go off and the gauge come back up. The next day it will repeat the process.

I was going to pull the sending unit to inspect for loose wires. Is this thing going bad, will the Techron help?

It kind of sounds to me that there is a problem with the sensor in the tank rather than the in the wiring but it may be there is a shorting problem with the wiring external to the tank. That could cause the kind of trouble you are seeing. I kind of doubt the Techron is going to help out in this case but it might, if you want to try it first.

I remember a member here pulling apart his fuel gauge senders, replacing them and having them go rusty and go bad merely a year later. I just deal with the gas gauge being off because fixing it is a prohibitively expensive task.

You may be one of the rare ones that have a bad thermistor (level light sensor) This is easy to dig into. Another possability is a bent fuel sender assembly.

All this good stuff is easily accessed by the passenger side cover behind the rear seat in the floor. There is another sender on the drivers side, but it doesnt have a light.
