grinding at random out of drivers front on brakes

Featured Replies

ok so i am trying to figure this out, i am getting a grinding sound out of the driver side front and i cant for the life of me figure it out.

i thought it was pads so i pulled it apart and nothing, pads look brand new, everything was tight, rotors are used, thats to be expected driving the car every day, driver side axle doesent have any play and the castle nut is on tight.

i'm at a loss, it only happens on the driver side and its purely at random, some days it doesent do it, some days it does it till i drive it a bit and other days it does it all day long.

it doesent do it at speeds above about 30 mph, it usually starts at arround 15/20mph till i stop.

so i is stumped. the only thing i can think of is that the pads are harder than OEM and causing some vibration which would sound like that but both sides have the same pads and its only the one side makin the noise.

this is a full time 4wd car (4eat and all)

they seemed fine, i pushed the rotor from side to side before i took it off and had no play, everything behind it seemed nice n tight all the bearings had normal ammount of wear and i tossed some grease in there before i wrapped it up

i think if it were a hub i would hear it all the time, and this i only hear it some times while i am on the brakes

Hmmmm, its hard for me to say without looking at everything. My hub didn't make noise all the time when it was going out, and gave me wierd braking issues as well. What about the calipers? There isn't much else it could be. Maybe it is different types of pads like you were thinking.

the hubs on my friends toyota would make a random wirring noise occasionally as well. Sounded like a bird squaking or something... it was kind of funny.

For fear of his wheel falling off on the highway he inspected the hubs and at first glance said they looked fine. The sound didn't go away so he figured it was either a wheel bearing or the hub and either way its all gotta come of to fix it. Turns out it was indeed the hub.

check your hub.

hmm well i'll take another look.

i cant find a hub on schmucks or napas website how much do you guys think it'd cost to replace?

Well the dealer qouted me $250.00 for a new one, which is ridiculous. I scored one from a fellow board member for much much less (thank you pooparu) only because the junkyards around here don't have anything that old. Someone here might help if you have the same problem. Try a WTB ad...

My failing driver hub would squeak and "quack". Did that for 5k miles, Then it STRIPPED. I was able to limp it home. I would get another one. Takes 10 minutes with the proper tools to swap it out. Mine would quack under deceleration, braking, and slight cornering. I got mine for $15, If you cant find one, I can get one for you for the same price plus shipping...

are they the same on the passenger as they are on the driver?

i think the expencive u pull here has a few on their lot and i might as well try and get both of them incase i can only find bad driver sides

they are one of those types of places that if they know what it is they'll charge a bunch for it, i doubt theyd know what a loyale hub would look like

so am i basicly understanding there could be too much play in the teeth where the axle comes into the hub causing the grinding?

or is it some other part of the hub?

they look the same and yeah its where the hardened steel axle is eating away at the cast hub teeth. Be sure to grab the cone washer and castle nut. Torque the CRAP out of the castle nut on reinstall. From what i can find, it looks like a lot of failure on these are from improper torque specs. They seem to die about 2-10k miles after a brake or axle job. Mine had brakes 8k ago by previous owner.

i just realized something

i'm pretty much effed on trying to find a hub, isnt the full time 4wd loyale wagon 25 spline and the regulars are 23 or something?

I have had a similar problem on a 85 GL wagon. I found the sound was coming from the cone wedge/ spacer that fits into the hub before the washer and castle nut go on. I didn't have any play or slope in my wheel either, but torquing the castle nut to the listed lbs stopped it. I think it took at least two re-torques (couple hundred miles inbetween) to get it to stop. Hope this helps.

so you did a new cone and torqued it then?

that'd be cheaper because i just got back from the stealership.

got 2 part numbers, their system doesent give details on which hub is for what the good news is they arent $250 any more, bad news is they are still $218.18, the other is $160.78

so any way the part numbers are 23600GA132 and this replaces 23600GA and is the $160.78 part

the other part number is 723610001 and this one is the one that costs $218.18

the guy said there were 15 left in the world and production has stopped, i dont know if thats 15 total between both of them or if its 15 each

any of these parts ring any bells with you guys?

i'm still trying to get weither or not the full time 4WD cars have more splines than regular 4wd/fwd ea82 cars

on a side note, part number 44102GA200 is no longer availabe, going to have to bulid or salvage our own manifolds from now on

ok so i have been hunting for front hubs incase changing the pads out doesent help. i'm trying to go new/reman but every one seems to be domb as rocks.

hopefully the new pads i installed fix it though. on closer inspection the old pads were roasted and overly hard. they were only about 1/4 worn but $15 is no big if i dont have to yank the hub apart.

if it doesent fix cone washers are next but still looking for reman/new hubs....

are cone washers available any place other than the dealer?

schmucks cant figure it out, havent tried napa yet, aside from those 2 theres one local shop left

get the cone washer from another board member, those should be compat from just about all of the ea82 cars

ahh i see ok i'll remember that since...

its been a week and a half with the new pads and everything was dandy untill today where they started making the same damn sound again.

its strange because with the new pads it was fine for a while but now its back to doing it again, that was the only thing i changed.

i guess i'll resurface the rotor and since i'll be in there do the cone washers.

just gotta catch my buddy while hes got the time after work so he can put er on a lift and use his lathe
