83 Gl bucks when climbing hills.

Featured Replies

I own a 1983 GL wagon, and have recently been having some problems with it bucking when trying to climb hills. I replaced the fuel filter and plugs. My dad seems to think it could be electrical, but I am convinced it is fuel related. The problem is some what sporadic, but guaranteed to happen on any hill. Having a full tank of gas seems to help, but it still happens from time to time with a full tank. Anyone experienced a similar problem? Thanks, wowzers.

When I first got my '82, I was having problems up hills as well. It would buck and sputter and almost die. I thought it might be the gas tank so I had it bead blasted to get some of the crud out (surprisingly I had a warranty on the car and the bead blasting wasn't out of pocket) and then changed the rear fuel filter. It still was giving me some issues so I cut a little off the fuel hose that sucked the gas out of the tank and I haven't had a problem since. That was probably over ten years ago...

Change your fuel filter (back by the pump). What you replaced was the vapor seperator under the hood thinking it was the filter. (yeah - I read minds on my stage show in Vegas....).

If that doesn't cure it then you have low fuel pressure, a maladjusted float or something else causing a lean condition under load.
