We never got the carb'd EJ engine - only fuel injection over here UNLESS it was a grey import which means that it was not shipped to australia by subaru australia...

That's awesome!

Cheers

yeah im not sure how good an idea it is to carb an EJ since their fuel injection system is excellent already but i would love to see about putting a harley carb on my ea81. even though to be honest my weber should work fine.

Is there a groove for an o-ring on the Escort disty to seal the back of the head and does it fit w/o mods to head or disty? If so I'm going to get one :)

Yes, on mine, there is a recessed groove with an o-ring seated into it. The head is slightly beveled at the outside edge, so it just took a little taping around the distributor to get it seated. Oil the o-ring first, makes it much easier.

The adjustment/bolt down grooves needed to be widened ever so slightly. I just used a slightly larger drill bit, placed dizzy on a firm surface and let the bit widen the grove. i had to go over it a few times to smooth it out though.

The only reason I am doing this setup, other than my curiosity and imagination running away from me at this point, is because my wiring, comp, sensors or some other crap included in the whole EFI setup is hosed. This is my first experience with an EFi that I have had to screw with, my other fuel injected cars all run great.

The 2.2 runs like a bat out of hell with efi, just not consistently. Unless I really fall in love with this setup, my intent is to megasquirt this thing as soon as I have the cash to get the setup.

I have the 2 barrol weber from the 1.8, It was awsome on it. (Read the post about how I smoked and humiliated an RX-8) If anything, I will only need to re-jet the carb. But I know a LOT about NA engines and am not at all concerned about the functionality of the finished project.

Good news that the diameter of the mating surface of the Escort disty nearly matches the EJ head, I guess it is time to browse Ebay some more for old blue oval disty's!

I already have a set of original EJ carb heads and the intake manifold with Hitachi carburettor so that disty would complete my setup.

I marked out the holes.

Cut the holes using a hole saw and an electric drill.

Holy Cow! ... Good Job but: how could you keep clean the internals of that intake, from the metal debris?

I Mean: if you did that Job right there, some metal debris could be Swallowed onto the Combustion Chamber with Potential Damage ... icon4.gif ...

Debris? I have a custom drill attachment that connects to a 10 hp vacuum for the initial drilling and a telescoping vacuum attachment that snakes in to each port. That and I took off the throttle body and stuffed it with automotive seat cushion foam so that nothing could drop in. :)
