'89 XT won't start

when i turn the ignition all i get is a *click*

All the dash lights turn on. auto seatbelt works.

???

Crank circuit is pretty simple. Start by testing the starter by jumpering a wire from the battery to the male spade on the back. If it cranks then you have a wireing problem, if you still get only a click then you have a dead battery or a starter/solenoid problem.

Try to jump it.

If that doesn't work give the starter 12 volts and let us know what happens.

Battery, starter, or ground wire are likely bad.

The ground wire was bad, i just replaced it with new one, but it didn't fix anything.

On to the next step!

Having never jumped a starter before, what is the best way to do it?

hit the starter solenoid with the handle end of a hammer. Have a friend bump the key while doing so. If it starts, sticking solenoid, replace starter.

There is no need to replace them. They can be rebuilt for a few dollars in parts - brushes and solenoid contacts are widely availible. Honda and Toyota both use Nippon starters that use the same components.

I just told you that - a wire from the positive battery terminal to the solenoid's male spade terminal on the back of the starer....
