I recenly dismantled my friends forester engine to find a way overheated piston which was cracked and burned on the top side. Has anyone heard why this happens. On old vws it was a timing/ octane issue. Any ideas?

wow, yeah that's bizarre. was it one of the rear pistons? that's where the head gaskets typically leak on these, may have been proceeded by overheating.
