HELP!!! replacing ball joint, axle won't go back in

Featured Replies

i've got the 88 sitting in pieces in my driveway. i had to pull the axle away a little bit in order toget the ball joint off. now it won't go back in. it's out about an inch or so. i've tried to turn the hub and force it back in, but it wont go. The problem is at the "angle" which connects to the spline and goes into the tranny.

urgently need help.

thanks

I assume the axle wasn't removed from the hub or the castle nut loosened. Sounds to me the axle is jammed against the tranny spline. You need to make sure the car is secured on jack stands and then push/pull the hub outwards so that there is room to push the axle back in the tranny spline. You have to make sure the holes line up for the dowel pin. If this is wrong then more onfo is needed.

can you get the castle nut on at all?If so use it to pull the axle through. If the rotor and splined hub are off the the castle nut can be used to pull the axle through with a couple of large screw drivers, carefully prying backwards.just becarefull of the grease seal. Some times the addition of the flat washer and or the cone washer put on back wards helps, giving you more leverage.

hope this helps!!!!

try loosening all three nuts that bolt the struts to the inside of the tower, and/or unbolting the control arm from the crossmember and pry it down/out with a pry bar. either will give you more play in the hub.

you could always take off the caliper and rotor/hub to get more of a bite on it.

been there fixed that. Its a bit sketchy but I put a jack under the hub and lifted untill things would slide together. BE CAREFUL.
