How much to budget for Forrester Tbelts and H20 pump?

06 Forrester 2.5 with 51k. Runs perfect, absolutely no problems. Want to start thinking about having the Tbelts and water pump changed down the road. What would be a ballpark figure to set aside for this? Not something I can do myself. Thanks, Matt.

Did you try discussing this with 2 or 3 subi dealers in your area since you will not be doing this job yourself...time will tell when you get there on how much it will cost...anywhere from a new timing belt $50 to the "sky is the limit"

Id think around $1000 between the belt, maybe idlers, pump, and labour.

He has a good point.

 

Dealer quoted my cousin $699 to replace just the timing belt. Add cost of water pump and probably another $120 for the sprocket pulley (one most likely to fail). Oil pump seals and cam seals should be inspected as well and any wet ones replaced, those are only a few dollars and easy/cheap though. But should be requested. Add a PCV valve and thermostat on the bill too - but those are only $20 total for both and take only a few minutes and literally one tool to replace.

 

$900 should be close.

 

Subaru specialist can beat that price considerably, ask for Subaru parts for this job. Probably $700 for all of the above work.

Thanks for the replies. There are no Subaru shops anywhere near where we are in WY, we'll have to take it to either Salt Lake City or Denver. Just trying to get a ballpark of what to expect before I start calling around.

I would charge you about 800 before taxes and shop fees. What you get (all suby parts) new belt, all pulleys and idlers, h20 pump and gasket, 1 crank and 2 cam seals, oil pump reseal, vc gaskets, suby coolant with additive, and a t-stat. But then again I am even less then the other independant suby shop in town.

If there is no suby independant shops in town look for/ask around a shop that does a lot of subys or does really good japaneses car work or even better only works on japanese cars. Hope this helps

You're wise to be thinking ahead, mattri, although it sounds like you've got plenty of time before the timing belt is due.

 

Mugs' list is very thorough and is exactly what a good shop should do.

 

Truth is, much as we'd like to have the comfort of a Subie specific shop, any competent mechanic can do the work required. It mainly comes down to how capable he is (and as pointed out, how familiar he is with Japanese cars) plus how much you trust him, how "comfortable" you are with him.

 

Might be a good idea to start developing a relationship with local independent mechanics.
