my belated build pics. gen2 brat.

Recommended Posts

got it off of craigslist,

some guy in everett. he was cool. he had done a few mods.

different seats, stereo with custom center console box for 3-way 4" mids.

6x9s behind the seats. not quite the HEAVY BASS or wattage some of you may brag of, but it sounded pretty cool.

he had done the weber conversion himself. so i never got the honor of enjoying the AMAZING POWER of the stock hitachi carb.

it had/still has the bed seats.

got a hi-top canopy.

my sister needs ride to pickup a dresser. i have the only truck in the country apparently, lol.....

having a reliable pickup is a blessing AND a curse.

okay okay. that was easy actually....

so i drove the brat about a year, no problems except the fuel filter clogged up.

then i swapped out the exhaust for a nice magnaflow full exhaust. VERY nice piece, and relatively cheap. thick material, like 14g. very smooth bends.

i feel like i did some other mods but i cant think of any.

i guess i got some wheels from qman. not sure if new wheels is a "mod" per se...

so THEN i pulled my ea81, it was working but high miles. figured id refresh it.

yknow the story. just new gaskets, degrease the old crud, maybe a real shy head deck, delta torque cam, markjw had some spfi pistons for me.

got it all apart, couldnt get the block split. got frustrated and some family drama came up, that distracted me a month or two. at that point id just lost my momentum, and my "familiarity" with the different bolts and details of assembly.

so i swore id never go OHC, or fuel injection. i LOOOOVED the simplicity of the ea81. but the ej18 called to me, suberdave hooked me up, and here i am. just got the ej18 in the bay today, not technically hooked up or bolted in yet. the radiator looks like a very pinched spot. if it DOES fit, i dont think ill be able to slide a credit card in between the belts/pulleys, and the fanshroud.

long story short, heres a few build pics i took in january.

wait....

ok, AFTER i watch the simpsons. i swear.

ok, THATS what i forgot.

i scored a nice bullbar/skid plate/transfer case support, off of craigslist.

i screwed with it and screwed with it. couldnt seem to get it to match up.

eventually i met true2blue, and he had a nice lift. and we at least got the back mounted up, it all used the original crossmember bolts. but the front still didnt attach.

eventually i realized it was a gen ONE bullbar.

but i moved the front mounts a bit and made it work.

i still havent managed to convince the skid plate to fit.

well, gas mileage, simpler wiring, fear of excess power.

dont get me wrong, im not scared of big power.

i have had cars with a LOT of power.

my 67 riviera has about 550 ft lbs of torque.......

at the rear wheels......

at 2800rpm

THATS a fair amount of power.

a lot more than these prissy shiny new f250 super dutys that all the limpy yuppies drive to starbucks and to pick their kids up at school. lol.....

i bought it from suberdave.

also, i heard rumors from friends that stayimg with equal displacement is good from a registration aspect.

on a sidenote, what do you think of these VW dokas?

thanks rob. and yea, i prefer a brat.

im just saying, if i gotinto that famous situation where you get married, and a baby or two, and the wife starts crackin the whip for a minivan or station wagon. nothing against suby wagons. but they are so much more often seen than a brat. i gotta be different. plus these have a pickup bed. and they are uglier than a legacy wagon, much uglier.

if i gotta buy a family 4 door in 5 years or ten years, i want an ugly one.

dont ask why, its just the way my mind works. cuckoo. lol

That makes total sense...

Ive had a few girlfriends say that its "awesome" that I have a family sedan already...

Someday he will be 4 door monster that insures as a family sedan....

Personally, Ned will be my DD/Playtoy and when I have to take the kids somewhere... Ill get a Forester... I would say Legacy GT... the newer ones... buuuuttttt I think thatd be another playtoy... and if I got a Forester, it would be a 2004/2005 Forester XT which means thatd be a playtoy...

Hmm.. Guess Im bound to have a dilemma someday...

UH OH!!!

got your girlfriend experiencing the dreaded "baby fever" huh?

my girl is like that too. every time, any time, anywhere, if theres anyone under age 4 at the grocery store, gas station, restaurant, ANYWHERE ANYTIME, she is ALL over that baby, and its kinda scary....

heh.....

been thinking about a rollcage and more speakers in the brat, PURELY for the sake of making it a ONE seater.

"sorry babe, no room for passengers".

lmao

  • 3 months later...

i can never get my pictures to come up big and clear like the other posts on usmb.....

anyhow, heres some more pics.

the tires are a 185-75-14 on 14 pugs. and a 215-75-15 on 15 pugs.

the stock, as you probably know, are 185-75-13.

so i went from 23.92 to 24.92 to 27.69

the new 15 tires are just some used republic ensigns from craigslist. i paid 80 bucks. i want to get some discoverer atr in 215-70-15.

they would be 26.85.

p.s. anyone have any experience with Heads Up top-end rebuilding and performance shop, in auburn, wa?

they quoted me 400 cash for pulling and replacing my cams, and a nice 5 angle valve grind.

no, i dont mean they make or sell cams. what i mean is, you know, i will get the fabled delta torque cam, myself, and they will pull the factory cams and replace them with the delta cams.

i figure, you know, im already pulling the heads off for cams.

why NOT do a performance valve grind while im in there?

well, TWO blocks. and yea. i have 4 jackstands. and they are all harbor freight garabage. honestly, i would trust a styrofoam cup more than the jackstands i own.

and i appreciate your concern. i realize the blocks weremt ideal.

but i am super buff. if the car falls, i will just benchpress it, and throw it into the next county!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol....

i am hoping to, at some point, get a used lift for my garage.

trueblue got me spoiled with the convenience of a nice lift.

i did my exhaust on his. and we kinda started the bullbar, on his lift, also.

the pics i just meant to attatch to last post.

can someone PLEASe tell me how to insert pics, instead of attaching them?

Why yes! I can :)

I should find a way to get it stickied, a lot of people ask.

Heres how to INSERT a picture, rather than ATTACH a picture.

1 - Get a photobucket account

2 - Upload your pictures to Photobucket

3 - Resize to 800X600 or 640X480 (that way you dont gotta scroll to see the whole picture)

4 - Look for the link code in the image below.

5 - Copy link code (IMG code).

6 - Start new thread, Reply to Thread, Message, etc

7 - Copy the IMG code into the message.

8 - Preview Post to ensure that the picture came in correctly...

9 - Edit if necessary

10 - Submit Reply

Note: here is a 640X480 picture.
