I saw a minivan that either rolled or hit the ditch really hard after the ban this afternoon. WNY is getting pummelled! My driveway has ranging from 8" to 2' in it. 99obw Posted March 17, 2004 Author Share Posted March 17, 2004 Ran out of gas for the snowblower. Took the suby to the gas station. Shhh, don't tell. It did awesome! The snow was about 12" deep on the road. There were a few touchy spots but overall A-. The AWD seemed to apply power to the rear wheels with a big KLUNK when I would goose it in 2nd. EEEK! I know the AWD is working normally otherwise I couldn't have taken the trip. My 2wd dodge almost got stuck in the driveway. It won't climb the 20% grade section of my driveway right now so it is sitting at the bottom. The suby walked up it in reverse WITHOUT SLIPPING!!! Its pretty icy outside with about 6 inches of snow on the road since they plowed last. nickb21 Posted March 17, 2004 Share Posted March 17, 2004 We got about 6" or so today, but there was definitely some mixed in sleet/freezing rain which made roads pretty interesting. I felt a fair amount of wheelspin when giving it the gas. Even got the chance to do a little "off roading" through the corn fields! Probably would be a lot better if I didn't have these all-season tires.. Only thing I noticed was slush and ice buildup in the driveshaft tunnel, made things a bit loader, not bad though. 99obw Posted March 17, 2004 Author Share Posted March 17, 2004 I ran the snowblower for 4 hours (400' driveway) last night and finally admitted defeat. We got well over 12" of wet nasty snow. Neither of my roads had been plowed by the time I went to bed so this morning there is a few feet of wet snow at each end of my driveway. Back to snowblowing. pulloff Posted March 17, 2004 Share Posted March 17, 2004 You guy’s got the travel ban in your county and only 3 miles away in Wyoming Co we were free to cruise the roads all night. We had about 6 inches to a foot of snow in my road when I got home and in a few spots we had drifts that were as high as the hood of the car. My county doesn’t ban travel, they just do their best to try and inhibit travel! My wife left the 99obw half way up the driveway because of a 4 foot drift of snow near the barn. I got home 10 min after her and her tracks were already covered over with fresh snow. I parked 10 ft behind her then hoped in her car to tackle the 4 foot drift. The snow was nice a fluffy and the drift was only 10 feet across. I backed up 5 feet and gunned it through the snow drift and never even spun a tire (4 snow tires) and drove right through it, literally. After the quick whiteout and a foot of snow on the hood I parked her car next to the house and hoped in the 03obw. Luckily the 03 had a fresh trail to follow but the Potenza still struggled to get some bite. The car drove up it just fine. My path through the snow looked like a boat making a wake through water. My boss pulled in a few minutes later with his 4wd truck (Chevy Silverado) and spun the tires and struggled to get near the loading dock I parked at. There is usually a list of road closings available on the radio and a "travel advisory", but there are always other roads we can take going the "long way around" closed roads. pulloff Posted March 18, 2004 Share Posted March 18, 2004 Travel bans happen around here on a regular basis in the winter. We have travel advisories here too but we have bans during powerful storms. I’m not sure of the exact laws but I think it’s actually illegal to drive on the roads during the ban unless it’s a medical emergency and you can be ticketed, although I’ve never heard of anyone ticketed. I think it’s also legal for snowmobiles to use the roads if there is a travel ban and a snow emergency. There have been a few storms in the past where the thruway and the other expressways were closed and the counties had travel bans so you had to find a hotel and just wait it out. Really this thread is about how everyone's subarus perform in adverse weather conditions. If this was in OT it would have degraded into an argument about whose region got more snow by now.
