adge_082 Posted March 17, 2004 Share Posted March 17, 2004 I dare say that it isnt quite as simple as whip out the old AT, bang in the new MT. There will be issues, there always are, so im guessing it would cost quite a bit more to do the conversion. Plus you then have to install a clutch and plumb the pedal in as well, remove the no start in gear thingo, all of that stuff. If your willing to spend the $$$ then go for it. calebz Posted March 17, 2004 Share Posted March 17, 2004 I have done it on an older soob, and have assisted in the conversion of a few non soob cars ranging from the 60's to the 90's.. Some are easier than others, but the basics apply in all cases. Having a complete donor car is the easiest way. If are thinking of having the shop do it for you, be prepared to spend a lot of money. You will need(general list, there are some specifics to newer soobs that I am probably not aware of.. I'm sure someone can fill in the holes).... Transmission Flywheel and accesories (shifter, clutch fork, those stupid little pins that hold the TO bearing to the fork) Clutch assembly(Disc, pressure plate, TO bearing) 5 speed tranny xmember with mounts rear driveshaft from a manual(they are probably different in length than the Auto driveshaft) Clutch pedal assembly Hill holder assembly(optional I think.. it was on mine) Plumbing for hydraulic clutch if applicable 5 speed interior trim pieces Things you may or may not need(stuff I am not specifically sure about with a newer soob) Carrier bearing mounts I am not sure how much, if at all, the newer TCU communicates with the ECU.. on the older 4EAT, I don't think it does at all.. some changes to be made there?.. I don't think so, but don't quote me on it. A few plugs and wires are bound to be different, you will have to find a way to trick the neutral safety switch, hook up reverse lights and cruise control. Its a bit of work, but not impossible.. Even fairly affordable if you are willing to turn a wrench. Get all of your parts, an FSM and a couple of people that know a little about soobs.. or can at least follow directions and you can have it done in a weekend.. The trick is to ignore all the funny looks you wife gives you and pretend you don't hear her when she wanders around muttering "you're friggin nuts.. you have to drive that thing 2500 miles in 2 weeks and its in pieces on the garage floor..".... Oh wait.. thats my wife... Beware.. you may witness similar behaviors from your wife:D After writing all of this, I remebered reading a writeup for this somewhere on the Legacy central board..
