north american name Ausralian name

In Australia we have the Brumby and we have the Subaru Sportswagon from the 80's and early 90's to 1994.

sometimes I go to the auto parts outlet and ask for Subaru parts for my car. They ask what model it is and have to check. Always have to check, because they get called a L-Series , Loyale, as well. Some people at Supercheap Auto Parts seem to know which is which, but I get confused, as do many of them.

Sometimes they ask for a number from the inside of the bonnet to verify...but this never seems to help in my case (I have a 1990 Sportswagon __ L-series) 

 

When asking for parts for their L-series,  what approach do the readers here take? 

 

Does it have a different name in North America?

Usually, the early models of the first, second and third gen of the Subaru Leone (which is its original Japanese name), are known in USA by their trim designations, often used as name of the model; so they're known as GLF, GL / DL \ GL-10, RS, RX, etc, prior to 1990; then they changed that trim level designation, that was used as a Name, for the name "Loyale" on the last L-Series, that name also was used in certain countries of South America, like Chile.

 

However, colloquially, older subarus are known in USA by their engines, or the most frequently used engine on that body; like the EA71, EA81, EA82...

 

The very best bet to find the proper part for your car is to use the VIN number plus to carry the part with you for comparison purposses.

After 85, we only had 4 body styles. Brumby ute, older shape, sedan, DL wagon with flat roof, GL touring wagon with high roof. plus the Vortex (XT)

 

There were some differences with the trim levels, but basically I just say I've got an (year model) Subaru (body style). 99% of parts for L series are the same & some are same as earlier MY.

 

If you're doing an engine part, then say which engine: carb, EFI (Aus only got MPFI), turbo EFI

If you're doing the transmission, then specify that.

ditto suspension (FWD & 4wd models have different stuff)

ditto brakes (only difference is that turbos had rear disc brakes)

etc

 

sometimes might need to spec power steer or aircon.

 

Just give the specific details for what you need & don't over supply info.

there is some cross-over when you have a post 84 MY, EA81 ute or two door liftback hatch and the EA82 powered L Series with the oHC engine (the EA81 is pushrod)

The other cross - over is what you seem to have found - you have an EA82 L Series , only badged as a Leone in FWD sedan form in Aus and the first EJ powered things (Liberties /Legacies) came out in 89 ? It will always help [yet not always practical]  to have the part you want to replace as a sample.

 

Just get to know the part numbers you need will simplify things even better

your spark plugs likely a resistor type with part number suggesting it uses resistor built in

 

forget the dizzy cap options

And then you have folks like Me. I have a 1980 DL 1600/4WD body, but the motor is an EJ22 out of a 93 Legacy. That's backed by an dual range 5 speed out of an '84 EA82, and then a LSD rear end, and has had all 4 brakes swapped to discs. Add a 4" block lift (done Right, thanks to the previous owner NWSubie) and, needless to say, I am gonna have fun when something finally goes. But, I consider that to be a minor issue when I know that my HP and Torque have basically doubled, I'm capable of going anywhere I want, so long as she'll stay wheels down, and I can attach a light trailer and GTFO to anywhere JIC, or just go camping and have all my kit with me.

I do feel your pain OP. But, keep in mind, you have a Glorious Soob.

I have looked up Subaru Loyale and Subaru L-series in "all of Canada" and there is NOT ONE listed for sale. What a surprise....I find many listed in Australia. (not called a Loyale here)

typed in Subaru EA82 and still no results. Typed in 1990 Subaru...almost nothing.  Lots of older Legacy's but don't look like a 4wd Sportswagon or sedan.

Are they that rare over there???

North America had a lot more trim levels than here, with many wonderful arrangements of engines & transmissions, plus the 3 door which we didn't get.

 

eg DL, GL, GL10, GL10 turbo, RX turbo, RS, ...

The carb motor was replaced with SPFI for the series 2 due to emissions.

Dual range gearbox is rare, along with the high roof wagon.

 

We had a few more options in 85, but a lot of these disappeared. Sunroof on sedan, FWD gearbox on flat roof wagon (which had GL type outside trims), single range 4wd gearbox, manual choke, mirrors on outside of doors.
