dreaded engine swap please help

good afternoon to all , i know you have probably answered this question many times "somewhere" in your vast amount of information but when i searched it there were 0 results so my question is...i have a 2001 forester with a ej25 sohc, overheated popped the radiator and thus ruined the engine i found a 1999 legacy with a good ej22 engine dirt cheap both engines are non egr can this swap be done easily, i can do the work just my first subaru.. thanks for the input

Not sure about the compatibility of the swap--hopefully others will chime in on that.

 

Just be aware that from 1997 on the EJ22 became an interference engine.

thanks olnick after i posted this i did another search and found the info i was looking for but would like to hear of others who have done this swap and any problems and solutions

Never have done a swap but what from what I've heard the '99 2.2 is a phase 2 engine which should be similar to the 1999- 2002 Forester 2.5. I don't believe a '98 or earlier 2.2 is as easy of a swap, but I'll let someone with experience confirm that.

Yup a 1999-2001 EJ222 will fit right in. Use the original intake and drivers cam pulley, and you will need a single port Y pipe

You'll also need to use the crankshaft timing gear.

So is that a turbo engine going into the Forester? I ask because I'm interested in swapping a ej20tt into a 04 Forester.

No, the ej22 in question is not a turbo engine. And you should do some more homework, the twin turbo engines are a vacuum line nightmare (there is a reason most owners of them overseas swap to a single turbo) and they also do not fit in a left hand drive chassis. The steering shaft and brake booster are right in the way of the left turbo's downpipe.
