So i have the stock air filter in my car.. it has 158k now... i'm wondering if i should change it, my gas milage has been sort of crappy lately..... maybe upgrade to a k&n or go without an air filter! :-p... i'm sure there's been posts about it.. but my browser isn't liking the pop-down search function thing :confused:

New ones are realitively cheap and the K&N's aren't all their cracked up to be. The impreza sports have pointless hood scoops, mabe you could work out a way to mount a airbox under that and get a bit of forced induction at speed? Put the MAF right before the Throttle body and the airbox tright after that? would that be near the scoop? a bit of squishy foam would join the hood to the airbox when closed. Sucking noise coming from the hood would definiately up the cool factor.

The air filter hasn't been changed in 158k? Is that like a pretend picture in your sig and you don't actually do any work on your car?

 

On a more serious note, I hear K&N filters have the potential to really mess things up if they're not cleaned and oiled properly. Just get one for like $10 at a parts store.

Why all this K&N fear?

 

I hear more and more about it, but it's rarely substaintiated. I ran a K&N for 70k miles in an old Legacy and it didn't foul the MAF. Cleaned it once, and re-oiled. No problems.

 

Running it in my Impreza hasn't given rise to any problems either.

 

 

Perhaps the real problem is when people fit open cone filters and they forget to support them. This can shake the MAF to pieces, but is hardly the oil's fault.

if you have the big box before the intake manifold, you can actually put the air filter there, cut the back half off, then open the hood scoop.... it does add quite a bit of noise, but it also makes a difference. not a huge one mind u, but every little bit helps right? im also forgeting that he had a 2.5 w/ map instead of maf, so that might not work.....

i do work on the car, just not the intake :rolleyes: i poped it out the other day, and it was pretty gnarly, so i took the air compressor to it.. got some big chunks out, i'll look into getting a new one soon. i like the hood scoop idea, i've been thinking of doing that for some time actually, just never had the chance or ambition to do it.

a problem i forsee with the hood scoop idea, is rain and snow... 1) rain will get in there.. and cause problems. 2) snow & ice like to block it in the winter, thus getting little to no air to the motor! :banghead:

i'll look into some things about using the scoop, maybe a water dam in there or something along those lines.

I pulled mine out a year ago and thought it looked okay. I had a new one in a box sitting in my storage. I changed the oil and then pulled the old air filter. What suprised me was that under the filter in the housing was lots of sand and small rocks. The filter was preventing this from being sucked into the air intake but I completely cleaned this out and put in a new filter. I wish I had checked it earlier.
