Impreza/Legacy engine interchange question

Recommended Posts

I'm helping a friend with this issue.

What 2.2 SOHC engines are the best and most simple to transplant into a 95 Impreza automatic?

  • Do the automatic and manuals have a different bellhousing?
  • Can one just take all the external stuff off any 2.2 and replace it with yours and it will work?
  • What years 2.2 will "easily" work in a 95 Impreza?

Thanks again guys!

The easiest one would be an engine from another '95 Impreza, or Legacy, with AT: '94 and earlier do not have EGR plumbing while '96 and later 2.2 do not have dual exhaust ports. But if the Y-pipe is swapped as you mention, I believe any '95+ "phase I" 2.2 from an AT model will do.

Pardon my dumbness on the EJ's....(I'm a gen1 guy)

What is the difficulty between the interchange of a "manual trans" engine and an "automatic trans" engine? (2.2) Are the blocks/flywheel cover different?

If you match up exhausts the same, exchange everything down to the longblock, what else poses a problem?

Thanks!

Todd

The Trans does not make a difference. You will just have to install your flex plate. 95 2.2 would be the easy one.

I've installed the 2.2 into 98 Outbacks in place of the 2.5. The wires all plug in just fine.

95 is also the last year of the non-interference engine.

The difference between MT and AT for that year is that AT has an EGR system. Both transmissions mount to the same holes in the block as far as I know. '96 has hydraulic lifters like '95 and is non-interference. The 1997 redesign involved, among other things, a compression ratio increase which eliminated the piston-valve clearance.
