Ok.....and update on the FT4WD conversion...after the install.

 

Alrighty, Ive had to put a completely stock 4wd exhaust on for the time being to pass emissions.

 

Right now im running a 3.90 diff with the 3.70 trans...so bad news. So far nothing seems out of the ordinary. I've got a 3.70 awaiting new seals and fluid to go in.

 

Fuel milage change over the years is as follows:

2wd auto, stock: 22 MPG

2wd auto, open intake and exhaust: 24 mpg

2wd manual, open intake and exhaust: 29 mpg

2wd manual dragging 4wd rear end stuff (diff and axles): 28~29 mpg

FT4WD manual with open intake and exh: 28 mpg

FT4WD manual with open intake, but STOCK exh: 23 MPG!!!!!!!!!!:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

 

So, as soon as I get done with the massive RX buildup, the GL-10 will get some kind of Super Ultra free flow exhaust, AND intake. And dont forget a 3.70 rear diff. I might change the trans and diff over to Redline syn gear oils.

 

Oh, and note that I am running Mobil 1 fully synthetic 10w-30 and 93 octane fuel from Shell at all times.

 

P.S.........And another thing, after installing that exhaust, the engine runs 10 deg. hotter, and I had to retard the timing WAY back to keep from detonating.........

 

P.S.S......I got my cams back form Delta Cams, I'll post about that soon.

I thought the 4wd parts would create more drag than that, I guess subaru really knows how to make 'em. Also interesting that the exhaust makes a difference with pinging.

 

It's great that you are taking this step at a time, with basically a controlled experiment, recording data. That was probably one of the most informative posts I've read on this board... Thanks!

no problem.

 

i imagine a properly maintained DL/GL/Loalye/Leone 4wd manual, EA82 with fuel injection, and freel flowing intake and exhaust, SPFI or MPFI, would get over 30 mpg. Even with FT4WD. I imagin the turbos would'nt get higher than 26.

 

As for carbs....I ahve no clue. I hear of them getting higher than 30.

 

As for my turbo, it got a SPFI shortblock under all the turbo stuff...so I get higher MPG than other turbos, plus Ive got mods on it. After I get it to pass inspection and the RX is done, I'm gonna try to get to the 30 MPG mark...then pass it.

Its FT4WD...the difflock is off. I still have everything hooked up. Driveshaft and all. AWD/FT4WD is da bomb....even with an improper diff.

 

So far, as a data note, I have noticed no difference in car/drivetrain behavior from the RX vs the GL-10 with the XT's FT4WD with a mis-matched diff.

gotta love the raind and blah cold... we might be playing with the "Lil Red Wagon" on sunday *IF* and only *IF* its cleared up and warmed up.

 

the mileage is wild.. .the best i ever got in the gl 4WD 3.90 d/r 5 spd (carb'd) was a one time tank full thru chicago in the laste fall at 31. mpg ONCE. back then the usual was 26-28 mpg in that ole girl.

 

this turbo wagon with the same drivetrain is lucky to hit the 25 mpg barrier. its been as bad as 14mpg but, THAT was a semi full cabin and a loaded to the gills 4X6 foot box trailer from uhaul for the moving of random stuff back to michigan from texas.

that was running 70-80 mpg too and the best i got in the run up there was like 18 when i had to do the 65 in illinois.
