Ebay!!! is this anyones on the board??
Dante replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
See my monster-wagon is for sale (It is not mine--that's just the subject so you can find it). Looks like the same '82 wagon in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle that someone posted in the Marketplace a week or two ago... -
Thanks! :-) I was wondering if you typed "Idaho" when you meant to type "Ohio" Couldn't you just order the parts and have a local head shop do the work to save on shipping? Either way, that would probably be better for my purposes--more bang for the buck. What I am really most interested in is a somewhat reasonably priced alternative to the stock intake manifold wich I have read is (a) constricted and ( heated by coolant running through it. I've heard ea82 manifolds flow better, but I'd prefer something like SUB4s or the intakes Ram sells, only cheaper Maybe I'll have to try my hand at making one after all...

Sweet! Unfortunately, it looks like the interest in this thread had petered out before I resurected it. What is the name of the Idaho-based company subieSTORMTROOPER and how do we get ahold of them? Ram will also convert heads to dual port. In another thread, ramperf said "You send your heads and the price is $995.00 to convert. This conversion is the intakes only but the exhaust is equalized and both are flowed. The intake is built for the flange of the throttle body you are using and flowed also for $555" for a total of $1,550 plus shipping to and from Ohio...

The online sales manager for a Sube dealer here in Seattle that maintains some Sube info on his website. He says: "There were a few GL convertibles made by a Southern California company in 1983-84. They cut the top off a GL 2dr. These aftermarket conversions were not authorized by Subaru nor included in any promotional literature or advertising." LINK (scroll down)

Dual Port Heads for EA-81?
Dante replied to Rallywagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Where? Ram? Do you know what they get for the SUB4 intake manifolds? -
Sounds like a pretty good deal. I'd be interested in learning more--particularly about the torque and power curves. Lately, I've been trying to find an alternative to the restrictive coolant-heated OEM intake manifold. So far I have not found much except for SUB4 and Ram's (below), all of which are pretty darned spendy: Twin carb Mikuni Intake system....................$849.95 Single weber system..(fabricated intake)..........$1059.95 I've got an article on building a carbon-fiber intake manifold, but it looks like more trouble than it's worth for me...I'd rather spend the $1,250 and get the other goodies, too.

Wow--there's some great info. here. Thanks for those links Storm Trooper...100HP...140HP...170HP...WOW! I can't wait to get my hands on one of these cars. I'll have my trailhead car AND a project car

Newbie question: 15" x 5" Subaru Wheels?
Dante replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yea--I'm convinced the 15's are indeed only spares. I will not use them. -
I'll mainly use it to do things I don't want to do in my VW TDI Golf or our minivan--exploring off the pavement, trailhead car, trips to the dump or home and garden store, etc. I'll see what it will do with the biggest tires I can cram under the hood and into the wheel wells (without cutting them). If that does not suffice for my purposes, then I'll think about a lift. I kind of want to maintain a stock "sleeper" appearance, except the tires... It will also be a hobby project--something to tinker with. The more I read about the ea81, the more excited I get in this regard. I definitely plan to do a Weber and exhaust. I'll probably to the pistons and have the cam reground with a bias toward torque. I've seen some "remote filter adapters" at a site linked to one of the Weber threads here. They were much cheaper than the Weber one, but you have to provide your own hose, etc.
-
Thanks! :-) I'm sure you are right--I've just become accustomed to my VW TDI Golf--the engine compartment is practically hermetically sealed Belly pan, top cover, etc. etc. I ran a weber with the air filter that came with it on my old Datsun 510, and I charged a few puddles with that without any problems...

Anyone Running 13" Kuhmo ECSTA R700s?
Dante replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The Kumho site says they make this tire in a hard compound and a soft compound. I don't know which version Tirerack sells, or if you can specify. -
They are available through Tire Rack. Here are the specs. They are available in 165/80QR13 for $62 and 195/70QR13 for $72.

how can i build my own cold air intake¿
Dante replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've been looking around. K&N makes a round filter with a filter top that will work with a Weber (it is the same as the round filter I have seen in some Weber pics, but has a top filter element, too). It gives you a HUGE surface. Pipercross also makes some large oiled foam filters for Webers. In both cases, I'd be a little worried about wetting them. I've also seen a few remote filter adapters for Webers. They would allow you to mount the filter or an inlet somewhere open to cold air. Again, you'd want to think about puddles and rain. -
Thanks! Can you tell me where to find info. on the cam mods? I found some great info. on the pistons by searching "pistons" in the titles of this forum... LINK I also found a couple questions about the cam, but no answers What about a remote air filter/cold air intake? I've seen the Weber remote air filter adapters. You could use one of those and some ingenuity (or money) to pull cold air from someplace that's relatively dry. (I'm thinking of something like the Piper-X Viper induction kit, below) I'm a little leary of the unprotected filters in the photos of the Weber conversions... Have any of you hardcore 4x4 guys built a snorkel for an ea81 yet?

Besides upgrading to a weber and the modifications HERE and an upgrade to an LSD (with the required gear change) what are the top ea81 performance mods?

Newbie question: 15" x 5" Subaru Wheels?
Dante replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
They must be spares. I found a bunch of sites, but none of them had pictures. I thought one listed the spare separately, but I can't find it now, so I must have been mistaken. Thanks! -
Sorry if this has been covered ad nauseum. I tried a bunch of searches before I posted this, but did not find what I am looking for. After lurking here for a while, I was under the impression that you had to go to Pug or aftermarket wheels to get wheels bigger than 13". However, when I googled "subaru wheels" I found a bunch of results like THIS that offer a 15" x 5" Subaru wheel for '80s cars for $50 to $60. Is this a mistake? If not, are they 4x140s or did Subaru sell some cars with a different pattern?

Will these tires fit underhood?
Dante replied to AKIRA's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey, these Kumho ECSTA R700 rally tires look really cool. They come in 165/80QR13 (23.5" diameter, 6.7" section width and 5.5" tread width) and 195/70QR13 (23.9" diameter, 7.9" section width and 6.4" tread width) Cooper Weather Master S/T 2s look OK, too, and come in the right range of sizes. Nokian also has a few 13" tires that are a little taller than stock (e.g. Hakka 1s or the NRW, which would be good for my purposes)... -
Will 14x5.5 or 15x6 pugs fit under the hood?
Dante replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry. I misunderstood. I thought you were saying they wouldn't fit under the hood of a turbo. Something about the turbo intake IIRC. Anyway thanks for the info. -
Will these tires fit underhood?
Dante replied to AKIRA's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks all--no turbo for me, so that is no problem. A couple more questions-- The 185/80/13 selection is pretty slim--can anyone recommend specific 185/80/13 tires? I am trying to buy some steel pug 14s or 15s to access a wider selection of tires. Will 14" pugs fit under the hood? What about 15s? -
Sweet. I want to keep things simple! I'm checking out an '81 in Oly tomorrow--nothin fancy except power steering and power breaks. If I can lose the emissions crap I think an ea81 will be almost as simple as my old '72 Datsun 510  Then all I'll need is some pug wheels and the biggest tires that will fit under the hood and I'll be good to go unless/until I want to do some "serious" four-wheelin' If the '81 works out, I'll only have to deal with emissions for three more years anyway, unless they change the rules... Thanks!
-
Will an EA81 w/a Weber pass King County Washington Emissions? I understand there's a lot of emissions stuff under the hood of the '80-'84 cars. If I can simplify things and still pass emissions, then I'd like to do so. Sorry if this has been covered. I tried a search and did not see what I am looking for.

First Post: What to look for/avoid in a '80-'85 Wagon?
Dante replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Please check out my related post in the "New Generation" forum--Should I buy an '80-'85 4x4 wagon to use as a second car or should I just trade my 2000 Golf GLS TDI for a Forester of similar value? Details in the other post. -
Will these tires fit underhood?
Dante replied to AKIRA's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So is it safe to say any tire (13", 14" or 15") of the same height (~24.5") and width will fit underhood? I'm shopping for a clean, straight '80-'84 AWD Wagon. I don't want to lift it or cut the wheelwells unless/until I get into wheelin it. I'd also prefer to store the spare under the hood. That said, I'd like to maximize the ground clearance to the extent possible for those trips to the trailhead.
