I'll take one or two (t-shirt and hoodie?). I wasn't around for the first run.

Bump. Sorry if this is a stupid question. I am waiting for my '83 FSM. The '81 FSM I have shows the y-pipes merging at 90 degrees in the boxy front cat on the passenger side. Again, mine joins at 40 degrees on the drivers side just beyond the centerline and dumps into the front cat right after the collector. Is that normal for '83s?
-
Yes. I edited the original post accordingly. Thanks.

I have a couple questions about my y-pipe. All the other y-pipes I have seen the ones where the drivers side primary dumps into the boxy cat at the end of the passenger side primary at a 90 degree angle. The primaries on my '83 GL 4WD Wagon come straight back from each exhaust port, then merge at about a 40 degree angle on the drivers side of the car. There is what appears to be a very skinny cylindrical cat (about 2.5-3" x 16") right after the merge and another slightly larger one a little further along. Also, one of my primaries has what looks like the perforated air cooling jacket. The other one has obviously been repaired (welded) so both sides may once have had the perforated cover. Here are my questions: 1. Is this a stock setup? 2. Would replacing the y-pipe in front of the first cat be worthwhile? I'll be replacing everything behind the merge/collector with a 2" high-flow cat, pipe and "turbo muffler", but the size of the primaries and the angle at which they merge on my car doesn't look bad. I've been cautioned against going much larger than stock on the primaries anyway...

First the fuel pump. GeneralDisorder posted this in another thread: If you are running a higher pressure fuel pump, which one do you recommend for use with a Weber? I'll be using a Weber DGES 38 on a dual-carb long block with a custom intake with a cross section that is 25% larger than stock and exhaust modifications. I know I may have to re-jet it, but IIRC one other member is running a DGES and I was willing to trade some mpg for low-end grunt... As to the oil pump--would one of these high volume pumps be worth the $109 price tag?

Well I finally got the '83 GL 4WD Wagon I bought from Mudrat79 through Washington State Emissions on the second try and got it registered in my name here in WA. The first time I went through emissions, the techs flunked me for a bad gas cap and I just exceeded the CO or CO2 limit. I bought an air filter and gas cap at Shucks for around $10 and it passed on the second try. Then I went over to vehicle registration, paid the governor and now she is legal!

Phantom Grip Magazine Article
Dante replied to toybuilder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I posted something on this on another forum I frequent, www.tdiclub.com The responses were not very promising. I also e-mailed Phantom Grip to see if they have something for our fronts. They don't -
Yea, you are right. I was kind of tired when I posted and did not think about the roof's ability to bear weight until I re-read my post and your response this morning. I was looking at my wagon this morning and it is still too good looking IMO to do something like herculining the roof. Most of the paint is still pretty good. It will look great after a wash and wax. What kind of rack do you have? I need something like that...
-
The other day it occurred to me that I could Herculiner the roof of my wagon, insert a few rivnuts in the roof to receive some eye bolts and then strap a spare an other stuff directly to the roof instead of using a rack. I don't think I'll do it because (1) it would be hot and I don't have AC and (2) it would be pretty ugly, but I thought I'd throw it out there FWIW OTOH, you can get Herculiner in gray now, which would not be as hot as black and wouldn't look that bad on the roof or my silver wagon. Hmmm...

Qman? I don't want to hijack the thread, but do you know anything about the winch that came on that a-bar I bought from you? It looks like one of the lighter winches from Harbor Freight. One of the reasons I snagged the a-bar was the prices I was seeing for new 2,000 and 3,000 pound winches I needed the skid plate anyway and the a-bar (almost got a deer on the N. Fork of the Snoqualmie) and the winch was a bonus even if it is a fifteen hundred pounder...

Jack and other on-board tool/part recommendations
Dante replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks Snowman and Trogdor. Duct tape will be in my bag. I have some in my pocket right now, wrapped around a Mini Bic. I carry stainless steel locking wire (yuppy bailing wire) in the first aid kit for backpacking, which is the one I'll throw in the car, but zip ties are a good idea. 550 cord, too. As to flashlights . . . let's just say I was a flashlight junky before I got bit by the Subaru bug. Check out http://www.candlepowerforums.com. I got a small winch with the a-bar and skid plate I bought from Qman. I don't know the manufacturer or rating, though. It's pretty small probably a 2500# or ATV recovery model. A come along is a good idea anyway, since the winch on the front of the a-bar may be buried in the ditch or wherever -

Thanks Qman--especially for the jack info. I'll try the small floor jack before I replace the bumpers. -
HD Bumper Options: Seattle Area
Dante replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Will do. Thanks Qman. I don't need anything real fancy--just something with a receiver hitch that won't get torn up by a bumper jack like the plastic ones. Unfortunately, I don't have a welder myself and have not welded anything since 1982 -
Well, it looks like I might need a beefier bumper so I can use a bumper jack to lift my lifted '83 wagon if necessary. I've got the black plastic bumpers. Can anyone recommend a good person or place near seattle to have fabricate bumpers for me?

Ah...another item for the shopping list. I should have bought the one Mudrat79 had on the car... -

So what kind of Jacks do folks use with a lift and big tires? I assume the factory jack doesn't lift high enough (I don't know, because I don't have one). -
I've been looking at this, too. So far the only affordable option I have seen is the "universal" flaring JC Whitney and other auto-parts places sell in pieces or by the roll. It's ugly, but then my car ain't pretty as it is I'll probably go without unless/until the State Patrol tells me to fix it...

Best Place/Way to Buy Tires in Washington State

I'd kind of like to have them all the same so I can do a five wheel rotation to keep the tread wear as even as possible. -

Hmmm...that's another good idea (and a nicer road trip IMO). I have a buddy who is way into Diesel Land Cruisers. He's got a connection in Canada who builds and exports them to the US. He might be able to help. Thanks! -

You are probably right GD. I am not sure of the wheel width. The point is, I just need one more of the same so I have a set of five. I'll drill the fifth to match the four I got from Mudrat. Once I get new tires and wheels I'll be "done" until I get my new long block or unless/until I stumble accross an LSD... Thanks for your help. I'll have to look in the yahoo yellow pages for 4x4 shops in the Portland area... -
I don't have a jack for my lifted '83 wagon and need one that will work with 27" to 28" tires. Any recommendations. Can I use a bumper style jack with the black plastic bumpers? I'd the more experienced members to recommend a list of tools and parts to throw int he car for road trips (besides the obvious--jack, lug wrench, jumper cables, etc.). I've got an old military style nylon tool bag and tool roll. I figure I'll put the tools I'm most likely to need in there and throw it in the car "just in case" whenever I go far from home.

Any shop recommendations? Preferably a shop close to I-5 not too far South of the border. I also need another 15x8 chrome US Wheel Modular 94-97-90 (LINK). At least I think that's what Mudrat79 used. -

Thanks GD. I don't care. I will cut and/or beat if I have to. Hey! Maybe I should just drive down to oregon and buy some. that's an alternative I had not thought of. -
I just replied to your e-mail, Austin. It is now close to dinner time on turkey day. I will call you in the morning (Friday) to see if I can get the rear disks installed Friday or Sunday. I also want to run down to Qman's on Friday to pick up an A-bar and skid plate. Dante
