  1. I picked up a copy of Sport Compact on vacation because it included an article on my first Japanese car--a 1972 Datsun 510. While perusing the magazine, I saw an add for Procharger superchargers. That got me thinking. I assume the prochargers cost too much to put on a $1,300 car. All the dealer websites I visited said "call for pricing." However, I stumbled on hints here and on a couple aircraft sites that someone might have retrofitted a Mazda supercharger onto an EA-81. Anyone have any details?
  2. Here are a couple aircraft diesels that might be small enough and light enough to fit in an EA81 or EA82: http://www.deltahawkengines.com/ http://www.dair.co.uk/ Check this out, too. It's about the proposed Sube/Saab Diesel... http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:OYtv4-zVLkIJ:ymmv.coffeehaus.com/archives/001274.html+%22flat+four%22+diesel+engine&hl=en
  3. Well, between work and putting new injectors in my VW TDI I've been too busy to get to this project. Anyone have contact info. for Brian's Subaru in Burien? I tried Yahoo's yellow pages, but no luck. Are you still behind Qman? If not, are you interested? John (Mudrat79) has offered to do it, but I'm reluctant to part with the car long enough to send it down to Portland, have the job done, and get it back... Oh, I almost forgot. Did you ever get that winch switch up to Zapar? I've been driving around with an empty winch box.
  4. I need a Seattle area shop or mechanic to put an custom intake and Weber on a JDM dual-carb block, swap it into my '83 wagon and get it running well. I was going to do it myself, but then I got a new job that involves working more hours. Any recommendations?
  5. I put mine to the test a while back. I usually drive my 2000 VW Golf to and from work, but I take my '83 GL wagon now and then to keep the neighbors happy and the seals in good shape. I was on an offramp when the traffic in front of me stopped fast. I got stopped before I hit the car in front of me, but I am not sure I would have made it with rear drums--I only had a few feet to spare. I know it's my fault--I should compensate for the Subaru's longer stopping distance when I drive it, but it is easy to forget... Rear disks rule!
  6. Work went nuts shortly after I finished putting rear disks and an LSD on the '83 wagon I bought from Mudrat79. I only got to test it once in the snow last winter. Last weekend I took it up the North Fork of the Snoqualmie. We explored a bunch of side roads, including one that forded Lennox Creek and one with some nice mud holes. We finally found a nice campsite just shy of where the bridge is out on the Lennox Creek Road. The real fun happened on Sunday, when we headed up the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie. We found the little pit on the road that goes left before the concrete bridge accross the Taylor River. There are some fun hills and a talus slope to traverse. Maybe not hardcore, but a challenge for this relative newbie. I also managed to catch some air on one of the straightaways shortly after passing someone. I hadn't counted on hitting that dip at speed, but the brief moment of zero gravity was fun
  7. Turns out I can't go either The other half was fine with it, until yesterday when she found out some friends from California will be in town for the weekend. Now we have other plans on Saturday. I need to fix the battery tie-down on my car and put a fan switch on my car before the run, anyway, but OT's been getting in the way. Hopefully I can make the next run.
  8. I'm a relative newbie to Subarus, but have been a Diesel/biodiesel freak for years. I run biodiesel in my 2000 VW Golf GLS. I know of a few people who run straight vegetable oil (SVO), but I don't want to mess with a second tank, etc. I don't think Subaru ever made a Diesel for a car. Try a search. There was a thread about Diesels in the "newer generation" forum I posted in. IIRC no one could come up with any evidence that Subaru has ever built an automotive Diesel. As far as I know, there has never been a production Diesel boxer engine (although there was a cool experimental Scottish yoke design). The good news is GM/Saab/Subaru are working on a Diesel boxer for the new saab 9-1 or 9-2, which will share the Impreza platform. Until then, get yourself a Mercedes or a VW. BTW, Subaru/Fuji Heavy Industries makes some excellent small Diesel engines, which they sell under the "Robin" brand. LINK
  9. Qman, realistically, I will end up strapping the spare down in back. Battle_Wagon_Medic, that intake looks interesting.
  10. I got my car (see signature), or at least the other half's blessing to buy it, as an early Christmas present
  11. I'll check with the other half. I'll try to remember to do it tonight or tomorrow. I am "working" now Chances are I will be coming.
  12. Well, right now the front edge of my 26" tires sits on the edge of the stock air filter housing. The tire is about 8" wide, so I'd need 8" minus the clearance between the hood and the air filter housing. I'm hoping that when I get my weber and intake in the tire will clear the intake. Then I might be able to fabricate a wider spare tire support and get the hood shut.
  13. [3" minimum lift. CHECK! 26" mud terrains CHECK! lsd or locker CHECK! some self recovery equip UH OH! My winch isn't hooked up yet. d/r range transaxle CHECK! and a sense of humor about possible body damage. CHECK!
  14. Good point! I only decided to buy the DGES instead of the DGEV after I decided to spring for a custom intake. Sorry if I inadvertently hijacked the thread. The DGEV 32/36 is the carb for a US Spec. EA81 and that was djbroadus' question.
  15. I got my new DGES 38 for the same price as a new DGEV 32/36.
  16. I'll see if I can rearange my schedule. I was going to take my kids snowshoeing on the third, but we can probably go on the fourth instead. Put me down as tentative. I'll post again when I know for sure. UPDATE: I will have a seat or two depending on the number of kids I bring, if any. If I can make it, you can come with me SuperRallyRoo.
  17. My first "goofy idea" thread was about cutting a hole in the hood for a larger spare. last night, I checked out what it would take to fit my 205/75/14 Cooper STTs under the hood of my '83 wagon. If you remove the stock spare tire support, which is too narrow, and shove the spare as far as possible into the recess under the cowl, the front edge of the spare just sits on the edge of the factory air filter. With a custom spare tire support and a weber with aftermarket airfilter, the "hood scoop" idea might just work.
  18. I understand I may have to rejet my DGES 38 to avoid an over-rich mixture. The reason I got it instead of the DGEV 32/36 is (1) I have the JDM dual carb long block, which is supposed to breath better than the US spec. EA81 due to head and cam differences and (2) the synchronous carbs are supposed to offer more low-end grunt. Hopefully, I can get everything worked out.
  19. How much better? Where can I find specs? I have a JDM dual-carb long block and I plan to put a DGES 38 and custom intake manifold on it. Knowing how the dual Hitachis and dual-carb manifold flows might help me get things set up right.
  20. I understand the spare is part of the safety equipment on old subies. Someone said when they were in an accident, the spare helped push the motor below rather than into the passenger compartment. Not using the spare tire area if you have oversized tires also seems like a great waste of space. So I was wondering if one could fabricate a spare shaped storage box that would perform the spare's safety purpose while providing storage for tools, jumpers, fluids, etc. etc....
  21. Did Subaru make a divided rear seatback for the '83 wagon? If not, would the divided rear seatback from a hatch fit?
