  1. hi, i have an 87 EA82 GL wagon carborated, and i needed a new engine for it... i found an "86 suby hatchback" so i called, and it also was carbed, i didnt know that they changed engine models in 87, i had to work yesterday, so a friend went down and did all of the dealing for me, he thought it was the same motor as i had, but after i got home the car was already in the driveway, so i looked to make sure it was the right engine, and, lol, a big EA81 was stamped on the engine block. anyway, now that i have the car, i already pulled the engine, just got done doing that, i still have the whole car siting here, what all will i need to take of the car to make this engine work on my EA82 wagon? and what will i need to know as im doing the swap? any hints/tips? i will need to get this out of my yard and to the crusher soon, so any help is apreciated, thanks. PS if anyone needs ea81 hatchback parts ill sell them for cheap! it was a 2wd auto tranny.
  2. hey, i need a new engine for ny 87 wagon, ea82 carb is in it now. one person i work with said that subies came with 2.0 and 2.2 carborated motors, i was wondering if this is true. i dont want to switch to F/I because i am kinna on a time crunch (need it before winter, or at least deep snow) and with a carb to FI swap i would need alot of custom wiring work and there is a possibility that it wount work in the end. anyways, what could i put in place of this engine that is fairly simple and has a nice power upgrade? or if there isnt anything like this, what can i do to this engine during a complete engine rebuild to get a nice power upgrade?
  3. its an 87, i dont have an upgraded alt, but as long as i dont have the radio, or heater on with the lights at an idle its fine... if im driving on the street above 2500 rpm the alt can keep up with the lights and the radio, if im off roading at night (idling alot of the time) i can only have the lights on (and nothing else) for the alt to keep up. and, lol, those bottom lights do get bent back alot! i just bend them back when i get back to the garage, lol.
  4. hey, its been a while scince you guys have seen this, so i figure i might as well post a few pics. i havent done too much, but i thought you guys might enjoy seeing it again. anyways, i finished the lights and cb and everything last winter, but havent had a camera to take pics of it til now. so here are some recent photos... like i said i havent done much, just the lights, CB radio, and opened up the exhaust (cut off the muffler, lol). anyways, it still gets to and from work... more than i can say for my other cars, in the past 3 months i blew 2 trannys, and broke a timing belt in my 2 pontiac fieros, lol. :-\ oh well, cant expect reliability from engine swaps. talk to you guys later.
  5. im building mine right now! a little pontiac fiero with a 400HP sbc.... in a hehe... it should run a solid 11 sec in the quarter mile (and thats only 400hp, sbc can get easily to 600+ NA streetable) hehe.
  6. that lokks really cool compared to what it was when i saw it last, the lift, bigger tires, and decals really set it off. iv been doing a bit to the wagon since i bought it, and i have to tell you, that i took it hunting a week ago, and i was so amazed at what that thing can go through, lol. see ya.
  7. well, i never looked at it too close, but this is something that i always do to my pontiac fieros... just get a shifter from someone who is parting out a 5-speed, and extend the bottom of the shifter as much as possible... or maby in the subes case, you can lift the middle higher, maby 2 inches, and drop the bottom that much, but probably not cut to much off of the top because if you do, then that is a hell of a reach. but anyways, this is just a quik reply, maby kinna confusing, but i could help if needed, its a real easy and cheap way to get a personalized short throw shifter. its real easy to adapt a t-handle onto almost any shifter, they come with adapters, and everything needed. hope this helps, good luck. any questions feel free to email me richlo65@hotmail.com
  8. ya, im the one who bought it, iv got a few things planned for it to make it "better" but nothing horrible special. ya, im in woodbury, and for weekends i am 30-45 mins east in hammond WI.
  9. also i just read post before mine (tom63050) posted while i was writing, and my timing is advanced 5 deg, and the timing belt has just been replaced like 10k miles ago. thx for the advice on the markers on the road, ill try that next time im on the interstate.
  10. the car doesnt hiccup (exept when its cold blooded). and as for going faster in 4th, ya, the way i drive now i put it in 5th for strait steady speeds (flooring it the whole time), then when i see a hill coming up i downshift into 4th and floor it (maby get 2MPH faster) then it holds that speed kinna well depending on the hill, but if id be in 5th on that same hill id loose 5-8 MPH. i think thats just an underpowered engine with big tires. anyway when i posted this i was just wondering how others drove around town, and on the highway that could help with gas mileage a bit. thx snowman for the 15% that gave me a better idea of how fast i was really going 65=75, 55= 63.5, and 17mpg=19.5mpg aprox. so 19.5 is still pretty low, but not as bad, lol. and snowman, so if Throttle position is more than rpms, what is the limit on that?? aka if i was in 3rd with 10% throttle would i be better than 4th with 40-50%? i kinna doubt this, but i would like to know where my peak shift points are. i am sorry for sounding like a newb on these questions, but i got to used to my 13.9 sec summer daily driver, lol, where 2-2.5k meant best mileage (on an engine that reved to 7.5k, lol) thanks for all the help guys!
  11. I am having problems in 5th. i could put a brick on the pedal and i wouldnt pass 65 (on the guage, maby 75 actual) when i am in 5th, and thats at like 3000rpm. as far a tune ups, i have new plugs, wires, tires inflated, fuel filter, put sea foam in tank, umm and a few more little things like that. and 17mpg is my average.... i get 15-18mpg. i drive alot of hiway miles to. i do not know the conversian rate for 29" tires, what is the stock diam tires?? and also the rate if you have it, thanks
