  1. Funny you should say that as you replied to me about finding the wrong size threads in my adaptor , saying I had the wrong kit, lol. I ended up drilling and tapping 8mm threads.
  2. if all that fails the actual guage can be faulty. I've seen it happen recently
  3. In Australia in my little town we had a heap of subarus doing this, mine included. Bad fuel plus crappy gasket kits can clog little lines in the carby. Only solution was soak carby in cleaner and install paper gaskets. Mine stopped that and just started running crap so eventually I put a weber 32/36 dgv and I'm definately not going back. They are really simple to work on and the engines sounds much healthier.
  4. running 13's with weber I get 28-34 highway. Running 14's seemed to eat more gas. But is everyone calculating for bigger tyres?
  5. Rocks, mud, water, grass. But where oh where is the sand, salt more sand? Anyone beach it without timing belts?
  6. sometimes it pays to check the float height as the hitachi are quite sensitive to it. I've had bad mileage off and on with hitachi and just recently swapped to weber. I'm definately not going back. greg
  7. Ah. thought so, my throwout bearing is stuffed anyway but I have noticed more slop in the system without the spring. 2wd subarus aren't very common around here, any idea where it should be hooked up. thanks for your help, greg
  8. I couldn't undo the cable on my hill holder so I cut it off at the clutch end. The manuel says the hill holder was part of the return spring setup. Can I run without it or do I rig up a small return spring? thanks greg
  9. You guys rock! I hate those ##$$%%## covers. Hadn't heard of anyone doing this but was considering at least splitting the bit behind the pulley
  10. I'm in Aus and redline weber doesn't exist. Had to go the new thread option better anyway as have nice big 8 mill bolts now. next job is get it above the aircon. ahhggrr. thanks guys
  11. thanks, I think your right this is the second time i've gone back
  12. Hi guys, i have searched everywhere but can't find any info. I have redline adaptor plate and the studs in my ea 82 manifold are smaller than the ones in the adaptor kit. Should I tap bigger threads or use smaller studs? pros cons? thanks
  13. you guys rock. thanks heaps. Bottom line I can run with one line till summer or I get a round to it
  14. hey guys, Im in the process of putting in 32/36 dgv carb into ea 82. I only have one fuel line in that elbow. Is that normal? What happens to the return line already there for the hi carappy
  15. my 86 leaked out cam cover gasket on both sides and had a stuck pcv valve. It seemed to use oil about the same but when I fixed those I don't use any
  16. I just had a similar issue but more off a badly running engine than won't go. I had about 2inches of slack in my passenger side (Aus) belt. As suggested in How to keep your subaru alive I tensioned it and that pretty much fixed it. Also in my experience crossing a swollen creek everyday will rust the idler bearing and possibly tensioner which quickly stripped the longer belt.
  17. My timing was pinging at 8 so I backed it off a bit and that fixed it for a while, then after 2000k trip on way home it pinged no matter what and really bad. I don't have an egr valve as its an aussie soob Yesterday I found the left side timing belt had about an inch of slack so I took that out as well. With that and the seafoam its run the best it ever has but i'm still thinking weber as the jetting has always seemed too lean for this weather. Can anyone tell me how they de emissioned it?
  18. My 86 l series sube has been giving me no end of grief and I'm thinking of swapping the carb to a weber. What do you guys do with emissions vacuum hoses and crankcase breathers? Specific details would be great as there are lots there. For those interested I have: cleaned and replaced pcv valve run can of upper cylinder cleaner through vacuum lines replaced plugs and leads, rotor cap and button tensioned timing belts (from htkysa) rebuilt carb and I still have pinging under load in summer:confused:
  19. had that prob once, I got it open by taking the grill off and fishing the end of cable out and tying a loop as a temporary fix, shocking timing I had blown a head and was topping radiator fluid all the time 2000k's from home
  20. Has anyone (particularly in Australia) successfully converted a ea82 hitachi to a weber 32/36 and tuned it to Australian conditions without probs? I have searched and searched and found none that have it working perfectly. If so I would love some details on where to find them in Aus and how to install.
  21. Hi to all, I have a couple more questions regarding pinging vs crankcase pressure. 1.I have cleaned pcv valve and all hoses with brake cleaner. Why is there still a bit of oil residue in the carby coming out of the vent frrom the right side? (drivers side in Aus) 2. Since I have had crankcase pressure for a while the cam cover is leaking on that side, is it just the cover seals that leak or is there internal seals that bust and leak out there? 3. It will ping unless the timing is less than stock (8 deg) and I run on premium. Even like this the plugs are a bit white. I have tried everything but new leads, plugs and coil. Can these really change it that much? 4 Going back from where the egr valve is (on some models not mine) you go to a steel can mounted on the chassis, what is this? I think its an anti backfire valve? can that cause pressure builld up if its blocked? Thanks everyone for all your help I'm starting to get some faith back in subarus
  22. I had this prob a bit on my 86 L series, mechanic drilled deeper and put in longer bolts
  23. Good points, My seals are probably fine I'll check out the tracks today. Personally I'm amazed with 330,000 k's on it that all the buttons still work! As for the pcv valve I have replaced it myself was just alluding to the fact that no mechanic would believe me about what you guys said was causing the problem so I ended up doing it myself. Thanks
  24. Hi to all, does anyone know what to put on power window seals to stop them screeching, its getting worse. Also, can anyone recommend a good mechanic at the goldcoast as my car has been through many probs related to pcv valve and it wasn't ever picked up, when I suggested it they laughed at the idea.
  25. Thanks for your help everyone. Prob turned out to be mostly the pcv valve being full of crap.
