  1. Nice, that looks like the ticket. Hows progress coming along btw? Find yourself a motor yet?
  2. That's pretty cool, hope it works. Would definately be a sweet accomplishment. For the electrical is there anyway to rig up a second, rotor and cap.. on a second coil above the exsisting rotor cap? It would require some real rigging :-p but could work!
  3. Some how I see the _pause_pause_ part loading up to be backfired like a cannon. Wouldn't the crank need to be offset some to stop it from wanting to go backwards/destroying itself? I'm not saying it can't be done, but it sounds painful. Here is a link to a low RPM opposing cylinder motor, maybe you can look into how they accomplish it. http://www.jabiru.net.au/ These motors have tons of torque, and are made to run around 1500-2000 rpm without a reduction gearbox/massive flywheel. I have played with the 6 cylinder version myself, and it's a work of art. Fishums
  4. We do not teach people to coast in neutral here, but I have never heard of it being illegal to coast in neutral, with a standard tranny in New York. I do know that it is a law for tactor trailers to stay in gear on down grades, and to use lower gears. Seeing as their brakes do heat up, and fail under the weights they haul. They also have a JAKE brake as well that is specificly designed for engine braking.
  5. Ignition systems! firing spark in 20 degrees of crank rotation sounds nice. Any one try this yet?
  6. On quality of steel I would go EA, in my experiences they take more of a beating, and it does seem to be a thicker guage. Weight can be in more places than just the steel you know, look at the size for instance! For quality of paint I would go with EJ, They don't seem to rust away as fast around here! EJ definately has nicer interiors, if you like interiors and comfy seats. I personally dislike them :-p give me a cup holder and I am happy, this may be important to you guys though. Dang that's 2 for EJ's I'm fighting on the wrong side, opps! FIshums
  7. This turbo was designed for a 1600-2100cc 4 cyclendar boxer motor. It is blow thru weber design, and produces 8psi boost at 2300 RPM on a 1950cc aircooled VW engine. As for carbs, it is to my knowledge that you have to match your airflow with your feul flow. Also intake and exhaust on natural aspirated motors need to be matched to tune the motor. Also why is it the common beleive around here that airplane engines run at such high RPM's? Most props can only be spun at 1100-2100 RPM. If the go beyond this the tips of the blades go supper sonic and destroy themselfs. Airplane motor's are generally done with smaller valves, intakes and headers for high torque configurations. 8. There are a few engines that do cut feul to certain cyclendars under different loads http://ohe.cat.com/cda/components/fullArticleNoNav?ids=147242&languageId=7 Yeah it's a big boy, prolly weighs as much as my hatch lol I beleive there is a northstar V-8 that depending on what you are doing it runs on 4, 6, 8, I read something about it once. Though I have to get some sleep maybe tomorrow I will try and find a link. Peace, Fishums
  9. They look fine and dandy, only thing is though... how do I find replacement parts? Still curious on the boost pressure limits of that bad boy, I've got a blow thru weber setup from my old dune buggy that is just waiting to be fabricated
  10. Who's lifted hatch gets 8mpg? Lets lift the legacy with the same tires and same height, What will it get 4mpg? lol Why do more pilots use the EA-81 than the EJ? Durability at sustained rpm with timing chains! I beleive chains are required in overhead sport class planes, then again I have only worked with EA-81, VW, and Jabaru engines for that application. what is the exact weight to power/torque ratio of the two motors? anyone know? Peace, FIshums
  11. I would suggest getting all four tires of the same size and rotate them on a regular basis. if you go to www.tirerack.com you will find that you can get brand new tires for that rim for under $30 a peice, or snows for $60. I don't think you will be getting stuck in less than a foot of snow running those blizzark's Check out Dayton Daytona's too, if you can find them they go cheap. It's not really worth your drivetrain to run the different size tires! If you hurting for cash head to the junk yard and pick up a used set! IF you can't do any of this, resist using the 4x4 unless you absolutely need to. hope this helps, Fishums
  12. Higher Flow heads, anyone know where I can get these? Peace, FIshums
  13. I am also looking into aftermarket ignition systems. MSD and Jacobs, are the top two on my list, still trying to decide which setup to go with. I notice the multiple sparks and duration, help tremendously with performance. I have not yet found a "performance" distributor for an EA-81, other than the Recurved dual pick-up distributor from ramengines.com that at $595.00 seems rediculous. If you know any other options, post em! PEace, Fishums
  14. EA-81 pro When there is a suspension modifcation to the car, reguardless of what it is. It's not an outback, and just seen as cool  Ha ha, FIshums
  15. How much PSI boost can I run on an EA-81T btw? Might construct a blow thru weber setup for this beast. Where can I get the parts to rebuild a stock EA-81 to be an EA-81T? Or is this something ellusive that I am going to have to hunt down?
  16. Common you twits, give this guy a hand for making the best of his soob! I don't think your telling him what he has is garbage, and switching in an entirely different motor is not constructive for what he is doing. He is trying to make the best of his orginal drive train RX, and doing a good job of it! If he was really concerned other wise. He would construct a tube frame, use his RX for a shell. Add 4 link 12 bolt rear end, tub the rear for some huge mickey's. Throw in a banks twin turbo chevy BB 502 with 1500 HP with an extra 300 hp NOS boost and whoop you all. If he actually wanted to swap his motor give him a hand then, but don't bust on his ride! That's just not cool. PEace, Fishums
  17. I rock EA-81 :-p bow down to my timing chains, and massive gas mileage. Sweet looking cooler BTW! I respect anyone more that is a "do it yourselfer" the new ones In my opinion are no fun to soup up, there are just far to many of them around to be unique and different. I was actually considering changing my hatchback's power plant to a volkswagen turbo motor I have, aircooled 340hp machine but that would just be giving up on my cars soul! the EA-81. I think if you can make do with the orginal you've accomplished alot more. Fishums Carbs are fun too! Don't let Skynet take over! The rise of the machines will be doom to us all, lol
  18. What state is it illegal to coast in neutral in a passenger VEHICLE! please I am very interested to know this. Seeing as I work for a driving simulation company that focuses on teaching students to drive safely. I have never heard that this is illegal. I coast with my bug turned completely off, as it has no power steering/brakes  Fishums
  19. That's pretty cool! Though no dual weber setups :-\ Also what is the part number of the kit you speak of? I see two on there.
  20. I personally know from experiance that an EA 81 hatch with minor strut tower renforcemnts is fully capable of landing 5 feet of verticle air time on a daily basis. They are also light enough that on a trail you can almost man handle the car yourself if you get stuck, which is a very rare ocasion in itself. They are narrow and small enough to sneak down trails that are created by ATV's! The turning circle is smaller. With a trip to the junk yard and the finding of an XT you can have a limited slip rear end bolt on! you can run gigantic tires and get incrediable ground clerence with road worthy mods for under $1000. Having a 4x4 D/R is incredible, you can crawl up hills that even ATV's think twice about. Depending on the state you live in you can ignore emissions without getting into trouble! No ECM with miles of wiring to deal with. You can run 86 octane and have a better power to weight ratio for 1/100ths of the price after modifications~! All while getting better gas mileage! WOOT! If you break anything on the car, it doesn't cost you tons of money to repair. How much does a WRX head lamp lense cost these days? compaired to my $5 dollar rectangle at autozone :-p To inssure the vehicle it is less! I am sure for time trials, and actaully on track racing, g-force in curves and all that you have got the GL hatch beat hands down WRX drivers. (so why not just drive a porsche instead) But come to my house with your WRX some time, and you can try and follow me trough the woods, down cliffs, through mud bogs, over saplings, through creeks, over logs, and up hill climbs! Somehow I doubt you $500 dollar plastic roll pans, and 1 wheel spinning AWD will hold up. Your car is more street friendly I will give you that, but nothing else. I'll drive my 74 bug low rider if I want on road preformance. You can keep your crumpel zones, and air bags. I'm not planning on crashing my ride. The chick magnet styling of a 2-door hatch, that can be driven anywhere on make out occasions is definately more my style! Peace, Fishums
  21. Where can a guy get a good set of webers made for the subaru at a decent price? I haven't found any yet, but I do see that for the price of a single Weber at ramengines $1059.95 . I could get a pair of VW dual 48 IDA webers for 3/4 the price. I have to figure out how hard it would be to make my own custom intakes out of a subaru manifold and a VW manifold, without making it look like junk! :-p I've got a few ideas already though. Any one happen to know what kind of flow rating we would be looking at if say we wanted to get 160 HP out of that EA81? Peace, Fishums
  22. (Ok, last question....it's Monday, what can I say! Being in neutral removes your ability to accelerate, which of course is handy, but how is it a hazard? Most evasive maneuvers I'm used to require breaks and steering, which you do not loose when in neutral.) senario, out of the blue behind you a speeding semi loading with rocket feul is on fire and jack knifed! You must out accelerate the burning mass before it's to late and you become subaru kabob! Peace, Fishums
  23. If you are going to coast, throw it in neutral. Think of it this way, brakes are easier to change than clutch's. But the ammount of wear and tear you are actually preventing is almost non exsistent. I am sure if we took two cars with 50k miles (one using clutch and the other sing neutral). It would only show minor benifits If you a really worried about loosing, your brakes, Emergency brake, and clutching abilty to get it back in gear at the same exact moment, causing you to roll off a cliff into jagged rocks only after running over 12 nons and 3 infants at a bus stop! Keep it in gear! Though if your worried about these things in the first place, why are you on the road? Personally If it's a long down grade I use neutral, short ones I use the clutch. Use it at your own disgression, my bug has no power brakes or steering. So when I get to those 1-2 mile plus down grades I just shut it off. It makes no difference in this case. If you clutch it, make sure you have it fully engauged though. Riding down hills with it half way pressed in will surely destory it. AS well as rengauging it from neutral without have a good idea on how to match your speed with RPMs. Remember some older Subaru's have the hill clutch brake feature too! Peace, Fishums
  24. http://ramengines.com/ I was just curious, are there any other vendors of subaru preformance long-blocks/turnkey engines? That 140hp long block looks really sweet, but the price tag has got me thinking (convert to VW aircooled) http://www.cbperformance.com/turnkeys.asp Where for the same price and Power, I could get a Turnkey with dual webers instead! Lol, wonder if anyone has ever done that one? Peace, Fishums
