Air suspension swap out- Can I pretend my 91 is a 92?
Rodney7286 replied to firstwagon's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwhen i converted my 92 legacy from air to standard struts i ordered the struts complete...they came assembled with springs on them, mounts and bushings....of course for all 4 it was pricey i think around $750. when i bought my car two of my struts had been replace with new(one front one rear) mine held air but i had a control problem, i still have them if you want to stay with air

Oil
Rodney7286 replied to hockeylvr93's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi switched my Outback to synthetic at 72K, all the fluids, engine, transmission(ATF) and gear lube. i picked up a little over 2 mpg. i'll change it at about 7500 the first time just to get the engine cleaned out...then after that i'll change the filter and top off at 7500 then change oil at 15000. i could go 25000 with the Amsoil but 15000 works out to about a year for me. Amsoil is great stuff, they have a full line of lubricants, i've been using it in everything since 1977 with amazing results. and if i can find some place to mount it i'll add a bypass filter kit, more capacity and much better filtering, synthetic doesn't go bad, it gets dirty

Mounting Sat. Radio
Rodney7286 replied to fnlyfnd's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi custom mounted mine on top the dash next to the GPS. i made a mount using polymer clay (sculpey) that you bake in the oven to harden, then i used the Garmin Gps adhesive mounts. the temporary to stick the mount to the dash, the permanent to stick the sat radio to mount. pictures of GPS mounts in "off topic" Garmin GPS, or GPS in general...Mounts

Gasket Sealer-OEM Head Gaskets
Rodney7286 replied to Rodney7286's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwell, i finally got the car back on a rack, got in there and looked with a flashlight, there is a little tab of headgasket sticking out, and on both sides there is definitly red spray tac on the gaskets, as well as on some other gaskets i could see. so i'm pretty sure there are new headgaskets in there.....wish i could find the previous owners and ask

Do I need alignment
Rodney7286 replied to rugbyben's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXmy tire guy also does alignment check for free, then shows me the printout and tells me how far out it is, if at all i always get it checked with new tires, they cost too much to be eaten earlier than normal

2.5L DOHC Spark Plugs,
Rodney7286 replied to Rodney7286's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXyes....definitly a feeling of accomplishment, and if i paid a dealer, they might have skipped #4 also, it had been ignored alot. i'm just going to drive real slow so it takes a long time before i have to do that again

2.5L DOHC Spark Plugs,
Rodney7286 replied to Rodney7286's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXfor a long time i have had the belief....everything from japan is made by one little guy working his behind off....then it goes out to a massive wharehouse where tens of thousands of people put different labels on Toyota, or Subaru or Honda...or Sony............

2.5L DOHC Spark Plugs,
Rodney7286 replied to Rodney7286's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthey are in, and i have to say the most tools i have ever used to put in a spark plug, and somebody else gave up... while #1,2,3 didn't look that bad, #4 was ugly worn down to nothing. it seems to have smoothed out the idle thanx again all for your help

2.5L DOHC Spark Plugs,
Rodney7286 replied to Rodney7286's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXit almost seems as if my car is built different then the ones you are talking about....there is no room to do anything, in fact it's starting to look like the only way to changed the plugs is to unbolt the motor mount and jack up the engine.

2.5L DOHC Spark Plugs,
Rodney7286 replied to Rodney7286's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXgood idea...i have two of them....they both got destroyed while trying to get the rubber guts of my plug socket off of the plug

2.5L DOHC Spark Plugs,
Rodney7286 replied to Rodney7286's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthat's great, i new about using the rubber hose to put them in.... i just couldn't get the old one out!!! there just isn't enough room between the valve cover and the frame to get anything in the hole, you have to assemble socket, extension, and ratchet one at a time in the hole. and once assembled....the extra length of the plug coming out of the head uses up the space...so now the ratchet is against the frame. i can't find a shorter extension. and i'm using the thinnest ratchet i can find. i tried using a socket on the outside of the hex on the socket instead of the extension....that's the one that dissapeared into neverland.

2.5L DOHC Spark Plugs,
Okay...i'm not an expert mechanic, but i've been rebuilding engines since i was about 10 i can turn a wrench with the best of them... i've read the posts....sure...putting plugs and wires in my 99 OBW with it's 2.5 DOHC, can be a bit tricky...but hey....it's spark plugs! Alright, let's start with the hardest one, move the washer resevoir,(i've read that helps) leave the battery, it's not really in the way. now the wire...ya..it's tight (but if i screw it up, got a new one sitting right here) POP! it's off...kewl...just like they said. Time for the plug,(wow...that's deep!) fiddle,wiggle,sqirm...kewl...sockets on. Of course i warmed up the engine, i've heard these things can be a bear to break loose. fiddle,wiggle,squirm...!the extension is in...ratchet in place, pull, smooth! it broke and is coming out nicely....couple more threads and i'm home...it's out!!! Hmmm! how do i get it out of the hole...not enought room, okay, long screwdriver, pop the ratchet off of the extension....!!!not enough room NOTE: trying to get the right combination of plug back in threads, ratchet off, plug out went on for better part of an hour, in which time i could no longer justify why i would rather pay myself then pay a shop for a mere plug and wire replacement. Alright I'M BEAT! i give up, one of my sockets dropped and rattled down into the neverlands of my subaru undercarrige never to be seen again (i know this because i spent another half an hour jacking up the car and crawling around looking for it) so...i'll just put it back together...back away slowly...and look for a subaru shop to pay my hard earned dollars to...to put in spark plugs! But....i'll have to wait another hour or so...cause that's how long it will take me to figure out how to get the stupid rubber guts of my plug socket off of the plug, since...evidently the wire won't fit over it.....and this thing runs really bad on 3. to those of you....who have 2.5L DOHC engines, and change your own Spark Plugs. I shall bow in your presence.....for i am not worthy! EDIT: This was meant to be more Humorous than anything else, i did find it rather funny that i got beat so bad by a spark plug and i did give up, but....with all this helpful advice....and staring at the ceiling thinking about it all night....i shall try again so....in about an hour....it's once more under the hood....thanx all for your suggestions

security system adjustment?
Rodney7286 replied to 1 Lucky Texan's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX[quote name=sea#3. Subaru says to hit the centre of the windshield to test the sensitivity , do this with some caution . SEA#3[/quote] there were instructions in my glove box when i got my subaru, the security upgrade had been installed, instructions said to set the alarm with the window down and hit down on the steering wheel to test sensitivity. i don't know if it makes a difference...just my 2 cents

1999 Legacy Speedo
Rodney7286 replied to Slegacy96's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXprobably not driving the limit anyways....since i've had the GPS i'm suprised to see most speedos are off...5 to 10 mph, and all of them showing faster than actual. i bought it while i had my Accord, thought i was getting great mileage driving 68...then found out i was only driving 62

California Emissions?
Rodney7286 replied to Rodney7286's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXwell...i thought that too, the ones i've seen before have big letters at the top specifying California Emissions, mine has some small print at the bottom that mentions California. In the FSM for the 99 OBW it lists two specs for the 2.2L, CA and non CA, but only one set of specs for the 2.5L i'm wondering if all the 99 2.5 were CA Emissions
-
California Emissions?
99 OBW Limited how do i tell the difference between a california or federal emissions car checking carfax my car was sold in PA, then went to NY, and finally i brought it to CA after buying it in OR. coming from back east i was sure it would be a Federal emissions vehicle, how can i tell for sure?

Stumped the parts guy
hmmmm... i just bought my outback and only got one key, called one of the subaru parts places listed online....gave them my vin and got two extra keys at less than $2 each.... think i'll cover my vin with tape too.

Door Panel.....help!!
okay, i've searched...and i'm still not clear and the FSM is misleading. 99 OBW Limited, i need to get the door panel off to troubleshoot my power mirror - makes noise - doesn't move. 1.every thing says 3 screws, i can only find 2 - one inside the door handle and one in the armrest. 2.the window switches, are they supposed to pop off or will they come off with the panel - everything seems really tight and i don't want to bust anything 3.anybody ever been inside a pwr/heated mirror - is it possibly fixable or should i just buy a new one and have it painted. thanx in advance for any insight and advice. EDIT***WELL*** GOOD NEWS...BAD NEWS... the panel came off without a hitch....thanx all....and...the mirror can be taken apart....someone already has and glued it in place, so....just put it back together and stick my chin to my chest to look out of it.....at least now i can buy one..or find one and just replace the guts to save having it painted EDIT PS*** kewl...upon reassembly...played a hunch...shimmed the motor assy. a bit....ta da i can see

Rodney7286 replied to rjames's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi have a 92 legacy 197k, which uses a little oil, after a long coast down a hill when i hit the gas again i get a large puff of smoke, valve guides i suspect--i'm using synthetic--it smokes just like the dino stuff
