Tightening EA63 cylinder heads?
Yes, my 1977 FSM lists the thin walled socket as part # 899988607 and the 'C' shaped one and part # 899988606. I do not think these will be the same for you guys in the US however, but you never know!

Tightening EA63 cylinder heads?
- 1963 fuji heavy industrys rabbit scooter
Wow! Just did a google search. Certainly a nice little piece of history you will have (or will have) kiwi subbie! And something completely different to the usual Vespa. I wonder if it is true that that the wheels used on the scooter were left overs from the Nakajima aircraft?- Tightening EA63 cylinder heads?
First some 'history' I have removed the air conditioning brackets of my 74 GL coupe. Massive thing that seem to weight as much as the car!!! And that was without the rest of the air conditioning bits, so it had to go (besides 1400cc is to small for the convenience of 'air' IMO). Problem is that to remove this massive metal 'construction' meant I had to remove two spacers that were used as support in place of two of the regular head nuts. As EA63 engines are infamous for head gasket problems and the workshop manual is rather pedantic about the checking and re-torqueing of the heads I would really like to torque the heads properly. The FSM states that there are two special tools required to do this job correctly. Both are sockets to fit the head nuts. Have tried to source these from Subaru (Aust.) and after waiting serveral months have finally been told they are not available (I couldn't have guessed that :-\ ) So to cut a long story short (sorry once I start it is hard to stop:grin: ) are these sockets necessary? Unlike the heads on my 78 wagon (EA81 with dual range from an 81 Brumby) there does not seem to be much room around the head bolts. Any advice from others would be greatly appreciated! Cheers- Northeast vintage owners take note
Hmmm... I would love to have a look too! (it's not fair, all that gen 1 stuff )- FF1 and 1400 RX rally cars
I suppose it does look blue in these photos, but trust me it is dark green! Wish I could put the photos I have from the magazine here, but that is not going to happen anytime soon!- FF1 and 1400 RX rally cars
No was not me, however I brought my coupe last year (2006) and prior to buying it was advertised on eBay.- FF1 and 1400 RX rally cars
Perhaps the gen 1 tag refers to the first of the L series or Leone? I remember reading somewhere that FF1 stood for Front Drive Formula 1, but I not sure I believe that! Cheers- FF1 and 1400 RX rally cars
I have a Japanese magazine from December 1996 called 'Nostalgic Hero' that has an article on the very same green 1400 RX coupe. The magazine is written in Japanese so I cannot read it :-\ (oh well the pictures look cool!). However the coupe is from 1975 and has the EA63S twin carb motor. Most of the interior is stripped (no carpet, rear seats etc) so obviously it has been sent up for rally. It also has odd wheels, those on the front do not match the back!- Subaru FF1 water pump
Hmm... Wondering if a Davies Craig electric water pump (EWP) would work? I realise it would not be original, but it may allow the FF1 to get back on the road. Not sure how compatible it would be with the twin radiator set up of the FF1 but the EWP means you can remove the original water pump completely and fit a 'plate' to block of the hole. Just a thought! Cheers- 74 Sedan Arrived Today!
From that, I take it your sedan has the spare wheel well in the boot floor instead of it being flat? From what I can work out only the GF Hardtops had the 'spare in the boot' here in Aus. I always thought it was strange Subaru had 3 different spare tyre set ups! Under the bonnet, in the boot (or is that trunk for you guys!) and under the floor for the wagons (perhaps only the early ones).- Will Gen 2 Brat seats fit Gen 1?
Thanks Jibs That would seem to be a 'no'. Which is OK as on Friday I will be looking at a 1986 RX Turbo, so any extra cash I might have had for the Brumby/Brat seats will be going towards that!- 74 Sedan Arrived Today!
That is certainly a nice 2 door sedan Bryan! Just a shame it has those US bumpers:lol: . Seriously I love the colour choice Subaru gave you guys in the US. The tail lights look the same as my 74 coupe except there is no amber turn signals. Makes them look cool all the one colour.- Rear shocks Question
Lookin good kiwi subbie!!- Will Gen 2 Brat seats fit Gen 1?
Like the title says does anybody know if Gen 2 Brumby/ Brat seats will fit into Gen 1s? Found a 4x4 wreckers the other day that has serveral Brumbys and the seats certainly look the same, including the mounting frames. My 78 wagon drivers side seat gave up serveral years ago, most likely due to its age and my increasing waist line! I replaced the seats with Daihatsu Charade Turbo seats (Did you guys get those in the US? - They were probably too small!) which are really nice and comfortable but make it a real pain for my 6'2" frame to get in to the car, so I would like to use the Gen 2 Brumby seat if I can.- Rear shocks Question
Let us know how the new shocks fit Kiwi subbie! When I check my 1400 coupe and 78 4WD wagon the shocks certainly look the same, just like your pic. Round attachment at the bottom and threaded bit at the top. Even the reinforcement plate in the wheel well is the same between coupe and wagon. One thing you may notice is the new shocks will not have two nuts for the top mounting. I think they originally left the factory with a nut and lock nut (another example of the engineering Subaru is renowned for!!!) but this is not included with new shocks, at least it wasn't when I changed the rear set on my wagon. Different thread meant I couldn't use the original nuts and I was too lazy to locate more. They have been on for a few years now and have not come loose.- Extra windshield gaskets if you missed the group buy
Thanks Paul Sorry csm101 is a board member from Australia that brought 4 gaskets(according to the windscreen gasket thread). I have contacted him today and will wait until the end of the week. If I do not receive a reply, I will have the one you have left. I can send the money via PayPal. Cheers Lee- Extra windshield gaskets if you missed the group buy
Ok so I sat by and did nothing about the windscreen rubber, thinking the one in my 78 4WD wagon was fine. It was replaced 8 years ago while you could still get them NOS from Subaru ($180! ) Yesterday while washing the windscreen i see the top right hand corner has completely split at the seam. Any chance of having one shipped to Australia? I see 4 were already shipped here, should have put my 'hat in the ring' then. What are my chances now? When you say 'a couple' just 2 left then? Perhaps I should contact csm101 and see if he has any left. Cheers- Front struts Questions
About 4 years ago I replaced the front strut inserts (shocks) on my 1978 4WD wagon. I just checked today at the parts store and they are still listed in the catalogue. They are Gabriel shocks and the part number is G44730. They suit years 6/76 to 8/80. I would assume the Brat uses the same strut. Are these no longer available new? I checked Gabriel's web site and it only goes back to 1982!?! So maybe they no longer make them which would be a shame as they were gas shocks and made a nice improvement to my wagon.- Question about 76 DL
With the 1976 1400 the EA71 should bolt up to the earlier 1400 transmission with no problems. If it was an early 1400 (say prior to 1975) the transmission is not the same as the input shaft has a completely different angle into the gearbox. Then again my knowledge really only applies to cars delivered to Australia, perhaps things are different elsewhere. An easy way to tell is if the EA63 has the exhaust ports on the front and back of the engine (early 'dirty type') or underneath the engine (later 'clean', in terms of emissions) The later type looks the same on EA71 and EA81. - 1963 fuji heavy industrys rabbit scooter
