If your clutch is slipping, the only way the cable could be at fault is if it was too tight (as though you were pressing on the clutch pedal when you're not). To test for this, disconnect your hill-holder cable and see if you can easily wiggle the clutch fork a little by hand before the throw out bearing hits the spring fingers (you should be able to).Otherwise I see two possibilities. You got a "rebuilt" pressure plate with very weak springs. (not so likely) Your flywheel only had the friction surface turned, or at least had it turned deeper than the pressure plate mounting surface. (much more likely) #2 above will position the pressure plate too far from the flywheel friction surface to allow proper clamping of the disc in between. There is a spec as to how far apart these two planes are supposed to be, and a knowledgable machinist should have checked this. Sometimes they just assume that your flywheel was already in spec and take the same amount off both surfaces, and that will usually work. The worst case is if they didn't cut the outer surface at all. In any case, it unfortunately sounds like you're going to be pulling it apart to fix this.

Yet another tranny swap question
CIS Subaru replied to Wasteland's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, it will bolt-up. You might need to use an EA81 flywheel though, because the EA71s all used the small clutch. An EA82 flywheel might also work, but the bolt holes will be a size too large and the EA71 bellhousing might need ground down a little to make it fit. -
Okay, I consulted my owner's manual collection ('80-'89) and this appears to be one of the many things that changed in 1987. The following applies to both EA81 and EA82 cars: From '83 (the year of the first 4wd Auto tranny) to '86 we had: 3.7 rear in all autos, and turbo 5spds 3.9 rear in all non-turbo 4spds and 5spds From '87-'94? we had: 3.7 rear in all turbos 3.9 rear in all non-turbos

I Found my Holy Grail Parts car today!!

What's special about the '85-'86 RX tranny? Is it just that it's a D/R turbo tranny? -
? trip computer on carb ?
CIS Subaru replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm sure it can be done without too much difficulty. I think that the only sensor inputs for the trip computer are the speedometer pulse (All GL speedos should come with this for cruise control, maybe DLs too), the fuel level signal (I think the senders are all the same), and maybe outside air temp (not sure where the thermometer is located, but you'd need to get it). -
I used to have this very same problem. The clicking is caused by early detonation (pinging) in the engine. Any time oil gets mixed with your intake air, your engine will ping. This can be engine oil or ATF. On my car, I had both problems. I would get the smokescreen both when exiting the freeway and when moving after waiting at a stoplight. I put a section of breather filter material into the PCV hose that comes off the driver's side valve cover (kinda like a tampon), and changed my vac. modulator on the tranny. Between the two, I've not had a problem since.

interchangeability of transmissions in EA81?
CIS Subaru replied to hops's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't think this is an issue here, but just for general knowledge: You cannot connect an '83+ Auto tranny to a manual tranny EA81, nor will it fit on a pre-'83 auto tranny EA81. The '83+ auto trannies (2wd and 4wd) require either the special engine bellhousing from the engine they came on, or grinding of the engine bellhousing you have. (learned this the hard way) -
Hill Holder / Master Cylinder question. Help!
CIS Subaru replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm sorry. I misunderstood your situation when I posted before. I believe that originally the P outlet went to the Hill-Holder, but that's no matter now. I think it should work fine if you plug one of the S outlets leaving just one S and one P to hook up to the two lines on your car. I doubt it even matters which line gets hooked to which outlet. -
Hill Holder / Master Cylinder question. Help!
CIS Subaru replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Can't plug it! The reason you have 3 lines is that one is for one front brake, one is for one rear brake, and one runs through the hill-holder to the other two brakes. -
Front wheels locked up!
CIS Subaru replied to TomInOR2002's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
FT 4wd D/R 5spd with locking center diff? I thought that only RXs got that! Pretty cool. I would definitely think it'd be worth rebuilding just because it's so rare. -
I had this happen on my '88 Wagon. It sounds like the teeth are stripped off the driver's side belt at the crank pulley, but the belt didn't totally break. On mine, I counted the loose teeth I found floating around inside the timing covers, and had at least 5 more than were missing from the belts!! I'm assuming that they were left over from a belt failure that happened before I bought the car.

Emissions by the year
CIS Subaru replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't know much about Cali cars, but for the 49-state models: 1980 is the only year for an EA81 without a catalytic convertor, but those were all 2wd automatics. (I have one.) Many EA71 cars were catless this year too. I believe that the feedback carbs started in '81 on 2wd models. 4wd models did not get them until around '87 (unless they had the C/W carb). -
digi dash problem or something more sinister??
CIS Subaru replied to oddcomp's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Change that alternator quick!! That same thing happened to my '88 GL-10. -
I totally believe GD's 110mph claim. My '84 DL 2wd 5spd Hardtop with the stock large valve 9.0:1 1600cc engine and stock feedback Hitachi will go 90mph with very little effort. I'm certain that it could break 100mph, but my speedo only goes to 85. On top of that, it gets 35mpg in normal driving!! On a long trip I once got 37mpg!! The secret is the transmission. The EA81 4spd 4wd has a 0.769 4th gear and 3.900 diff resulting it a total reduction of 2.999. The EA71/EA81 2wd 5spd has a 0.725 5th gear and a 3.700 diff resulting in a total reduction of 2.683. So in top gear at 4000rpm, the 4wd's wheels are spinning at 1333rpm while the 2wd's wheels are spinning at 1490rpm. With 185/70/13 tires, that's about an 11mph difference at 4000rpm.

ea81... torque the center nut in three steps?
CIS Subaru replied to floortom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
When I did this, I used a method similar to the one in the Chilton's manual. They have instructions on how to make a spacer to put in place of the rocker arm assembly. I just used a couple of 1/2" drive sockets and large washers as spacers for the rocker arm nuts. Then, after you're all done torquing them all down (including the ones on the spacers), you remove your spacers, put the rocker assembly on, and torque its nuts again. I hope that made sense. It's really easy and saves you the trouble of buying a tool you'll hardly ever need. -
Correction: I just looked at the extra photos, and it IS a 2wd automatic.
-
I agree with you. It appears to be a 2wd automatic

EA81 C/W 1bbl = 36.5mm The 3 digit number in the model name of Hitachi carbs gives the throttle bores. The first two digits are the larger bore, and the third digit is the last digit of the smaller bore. You have to use common sense to fill in the missing digit for the smaller bore. EA81 Hitachi carbs all have "306" in the name, thus 30mm & 26mm. EA82 Hitachi carbs all have "328" in the name, thus 32mm & 28mm. There are some Nissan or Isuzu trucks that used Hitachi carbs with "340" in the name, and are thus 34mm & 30mm. I looked at one of these in a junkyard once, and they have the proper mounting pattern to fit on a EA82 intake. The one I was looking at was not computer controlled either, and had very little emissions junk on it since it was on an older truck.

Cool. That's what I wanted to hear. Thanks guys.
-
That's certainly something to consider, but if I'm not mistaken, I think his problem was on the tranny end of the cable. I'm looking at using an EA82 speedometer with an EA81 tranny, so I really just need to know if the cable will be turning the proper speed to make the gauge read correctly.
-
Does anyone know if all EA81 and EA82 transmissions use the same speedometer gearing ratio? I've been thinking about attempting to use a 120mph EA82 speedometer in my EA81 DL cluster because I'm already going to add a tach, and I hate being able to peg the speedometer. I just didn't want to get into it and find out that it would be reading wrong when I got done.

rx is possesed... grrr
CIS Subaru replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
When this happened to my '85 GL-10, it took out the cruise control too. -
mpfi conversion, what not to do
CIS Subaru replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm not sure, but I think your system only puts out something like 35-40psi. The Bosch K-Jetronic system (CIS) that I used on my EA82 Wagon uses 80-90psi. Glad to hear that you got it working. The problem you discovered is exacly the reason why you NEED to use a surge tank when using two pumps with different flow characteristics.
