  1. Hah! And here I was, wondering if I could switch the power windows and locks OUT of my 96 Legacy so I could get the oldfashioned handpowered sort! (I'd offer to trade you cars, but I love mine even though it has those annoying power windows and locks.) Kaja-the-fuddy-duddy
  2. I've been using tweezers wrapped in a bandana to pull the cd's out. The player tries to spit them out, but they get stuck. Then the player motor makes all kinds of horrible noise, the cd is stuck right at the edge, and nothing goes anywhere. Putting in a new cd is a risky endevour. They get stuck at the edge, too. (Dang, and I just got a nifty visor cd holder...) I'll have to check the repairfaq link. Thanks!
  3. I tried to get my answer through the search function, I really did! I know a while back someone posted about cd's getting stuck in the cd player, how to get them out, and how to fix the problem. (mine's a 96 Legacy with single cd) Could someone with computer skills find it for me and post the link? Thank you from the technologically impaired!
  4. We have an 02. We won't be trading it in, we like it too much. If you don't like yours, and will resent having to pay for repairs/wear and tear, then trade it in. If you like it, see if you can buy the warrantee extension. My mom did that for her Impreza. You might ask yourself if the amount of money you'd cough up for a new Forester with a new 3 year warrantee is LESS than what you'd pay for repairs on the old that would've been covered by warrantee for 3 more years.
  5. Oxy sensor? Our 02 Forester had a myriad of problems, which all cleared up when we had the oxy sensor replaced. It did NOT set off a CEL. We were lucky enough to have a mechanic who knew that our Foresters have problems with oxy sensors.
  6. My CD player doesn't work... but since I'm now paying big bucks to my dentist for a crown and filling, no new CD player for me. (but I did check out the Ebay link. Thanks!)
  7. We fit my gf's Trek and my BikeE recumbent into her Forester. (Along with enough gear for the 5 day DALMAC ride.) We had to take off the front wheel of her bike and fold down the backrest of mine, but they fit in there together just fine, and there was still room for the two of us! However, I intend getting a Sport Rack (with recumbent tray) when we start hauling my son's bike too, cuz I really doubt three bikes will fit in the Forester or the Legacy and we'll need the backseat up.
  8. Mmmm, tacky $40 Target cloth seatcovers.... (mine are blue Hawaiian print, with a matching CD holder for the passenger-side visor)
  9. My 96 Legacy 2.2L blows billowing WHITE smoke at start-up when it's cold. Dealer told me that was just cuz it's cold. Haven't noticed any blue, though. Sorry.
  10. That's some pretty low mileage. How much are they asking? Just for info sake: I got my 96 Legacy from a member of this board with 94k for $4,500. You may need to replace the hatch-latch. Seems to rust out on the later 90's wagons, cuz it wasn't galvanized. My car is from the rust belt, lots of salt on the roads, but no body rust.
  11. I had that in my 96 Legacy 2.2. Exactly as you described it. I had the fuel filter and the spark plugs and wires replaced, and the hesitation is gone now. I don't know which one did the trick, but one of them did.
  12. No, no, I have GOOD luck! See, everytime something goes goofy with the car I have you guys to answer my questions! Thanks! (P.S. I don't see or feel a metal pin, and the only pieces I found are the broken button and a spring. I suppose I could jam a ball point pen into the handle and use that to release the ratchety thing.)
  13. 96 Legacy manual trans. The parking brake release button snapped right off (and flew across the passenger seat) this morning. Luckily, the brake released BEFORE the button broke. So, I'll get to spend some more quality time with Williams Auto World's Subaru Service Dept., because I always use the p-brake. I must have a working p-brake for my mental stability. The first chance I'll have will be Friday. Meanwhile, I've got questions: 1. If I accidentally pull up on the brake lever, how can I get the brake to release? 2. If I park and leave the car in gear, which is gonna hold it better, Reverse or First? (and does it really work?) 3. Anybody got an idea how much this is gonna cost? Thanks! Kaja
  14. And if it doesn't work, do a search for "hatch latch" and follow the great instructions posted by Commuter for replacing the whole rusted mess. I managed it on my 96 Legacy, and I'm a mechanical moron.
  15. Yeah, yeah! I wanna bring it to Seattle ! My lovely 2.2L needs Mike!! (who wants to find me a job and a house?) (actually, I'll be home in April and hopefully looking for a job and house/apt.) I've had the coolant flushed. (I assume previous owner -and USMB member- kept up with it, too.) I'm very careful to replace everything that even hints at needing it. No, this dealer is the one who fixed the mess the independent mechanic (who had no license and ran away) made of my car. This dealer has done some work and given me some parts for free, so he's on my good list. I'm inclined to trust his judgement, but I worry because everyone always says to change the pump at the same time as the belt. He said it checked out fine, so they left it. Pump did not show up on my invoice, just seals and belts. Heck, I'm a major worry-wart. (cuz I like my car and want to keep it running well) Thanks, everyone!
  16. When I had my timing belt and engine seals replaced the dealer didn't replace the water pump, even though I said I'd heard it should be replaced. He said it was fine. Now, considering he's quick to tell me every little thing that should be fixed in my car, I wonder if I should believe him. How important is it to replace the water pump (105k)? Will they keep running ok in a 96 Legacy? Will the sky fall, the oceans burn, and the world as we know it end if the pump isn't replaced?
  17. Here's a link to some hatch latch info. Scroll down a ways for prices and part numbers and a link to some great instructions Commuter posted for replacing the latch. It's pretty easy to do. I got my parts from 1stsubaruparts.com. http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7424&highlight=hatch+latch
  18. All of my Mickey Mouse covers broke when I had my timing belt done. The dealer didn't charge me for the new replacements. I guess they must break often.
  19. I checked the fuel filter (good description! thanks, I was able to find it easily!). It was fine. Called the mechanic, he said not to try to drive it in... So, I did the whole AAA flatbed truck thing. NO LEAK! I couldn't believe it! That car stank to high heaven for at least 3 hours last night. (I took the dog out at 11pm, and it still stank) The only guess anyone could come up with is that I drove through a puddle of gas at the stoplight (?). I don't know if the 96 Legacies have a problem like the 02 Imprezas, but I will say that it wasn't the most fun I had all day! (but it was kinda cool seeing my wagon sailing along on the flatbed truck)
  20. My 96 Legacy has the same lefty rust problem. Replaced my hatch latch because of the rust, too.
  21. my 96 Legacy 2.2L 5spd gets around 26 mpg in town and around 30 mpg on the highway. Most of my town driving is short little trips (around 3 miles) so I'm guessing my city mpg would be better if I didn't live so close to everything!
  22. 96 Legacy manual trans. 2 blocks from home, as I pulled away from a stop light, the inside of the car was flooded with a smell of gasoline that was so strong it made me feel kind of sick. When I got home and opened the car door another wave of gasoline fumes rolled into the car. I can't figure out where the smell is coming from, but it's pretty strong if you stand downwind of the car (it's parked). I looked underneath with my flashlight and couldn't see any drips falling. Obviously I'm calling the mechanic in the morning, but do y'all have any ideas? Is the car gonna explode? I just had fuel filter, plugs, timing belt, and seals replaced in the last month. Could something have gone wrong there? Oh, yeah, the tank reads 1/4 full and I've been using gasline antifreeze with every fill up. We've been in the below zeroes for the last week and today was above freezing for a while. Oh, my poor Twobaru!
  23. My car came with cruise control but I have never used it. I prefer to drive the car myself. I'm a control freak. No idea what the things are supposed to be like.
  24. I've had very good experience dealing with 1stsubaruparts.com. Good prices, nice folks.
  25. I have a 96 Legacy 2.2 5 spd. 1. I haven't had this problem (yet)... My air conditioner system burbles like a fishtank, but no whirring yet. 2. I have a bad baffle (dunno what that is, I'm just trusting the mechanic) that gives me a similar set of noises. The baffle is somewhere in the exhaust system, and I will get it fixed when I have more money. Dunno if thats any help at all, but it's what I've got!
