Subaru 360 Starts, Runs then Dies
Esteban32696 replied to brus brother's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
If it sat that long, the tank thru the cylinders will need cleaning. Great website for 360 owners. http://www.subaru360club.org/forums/ -

89 Carbed Justy cold start
Esteban32696 replied to chipper6's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep, as Ronan said, " check those vacuum lines." My last carbed Justy had a vac line behind the carb that kept coming off . It was very hard to see,,, so every vacuum line on it, follow to make sure both ends are connected & rubber is not rotten. The Justy carb was a complicated, & $$ thing. Once you get it running " pretty good ", you may leave well enough alone. Also, make sure it has a good fuel filter, & run a dose of GOOD carb cleaner thru it. -
http://www.generatorsales.com/calculator_GOOGLE.ASP?gclid=CIPc6-jN54kCFRZNUAodgUX9HQ Is a wattage calculator to determine your needs. When using gen power, LIMIT your power usage as much as possible !!!! It is nothing for a gas generator to use 3 gallons PER HOUR !! I have set up several homes here in the hurricane state [ Fl. ] on gensets. I recommend an enclosed " living area." A closed bedroom, with small lamp w/compact flourescent bulbs [ should be in ALL your lites ] radio, small fan, small TV, small window a/c, or small oil filled radiator type electric heaters, are great choices. Run power to inside with heavy duty extension cords. NOT TO OUTLETS,, OR POWER METER !!! You can unplug the heater/ a/c,, plug in microwave to cook a meal, or plug in fridge to run a few minutes to keep food cold. Same with freezer. This is all easily done with a 2KW [ 2000 watt ] generator !! I have many, many years of experience with gens.Really, you get what you pay for . A cheaper one [ B & S engines, etc] will run at hi rpms, so noisy, & VERY short life. I have seen several of them blow up after 2-3 days of use, after hurricanes, here in Fl. Robin-Subaru, Honda, Kawasaki, are all good brands,, BUT, THEIR line of gensets, not just " Honda powered", etc.

I got a set of dirt cheap 13' wheels off a ' Vette. No, NO, not a Corvette,,, a "Cheeevette." They looked & measured to be just about right. NOPE, front wheels caught on those " tits" that stick out. I took a Dremel tool to those & got rid of them. I could see no purpose to them & it seems much less dangerous to grind on those than the center of the wheel. The wheels fit, then, but still had the problem of finding the " right size" tire to keep from rubbing the top of fenderwell, the front or rear edge, of fenderwell. Reinstalled 12" & went to other projects.I found those wheels at a junkyard with 1/2 way decent tires on them for $5/each.

What's up Ronan? I tried several ideas with 13" & went back to 12", on my older Justy. May try it again since I have a newer Justy, now. Even though another wheel may have same pattern size, the center hole MUST be as big as the Justy's wheel . On the front hub, there are a few protrusions that stick out & will not let a donor wheel fit, unless the center hole size is the same. Some people cut these off, or enlarge the hole of donor wheel. Also, I had trouble finding the right size tire that would not rub. Some were too wide, too tall, etc. You would either;; find the right 13" tire/wheel combo, alter the fenders, raise the car, to achieve the goal. GOOD LUCK !!Changing to a different size tire will also affect the power a little bit & speedometer readings. You are really changing the " final drive " ratio.

I would double-check that you have plug wires on right. Easy mistake!! If that isn't it, I would replace distributor cap, & rotor, & go from there. Carb or fuel injected engine ???

13" Justy wheels ?
Esteban32696 replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Look thru this site for 13" info ;;; http://www.subarujusty.proboards20.com/index.cgi?board=wheelsandtires -
GINGERLY ,,drive it as is! NO FAST STARTS !! Get info on how to PROPERLY service & maintain that transmission. ENJOY 40 mpg. Change oil & filter at frequent intervals, to help avoid the oil pump problem, SOME have. I haven't had a problem with one yet. I change every 3k miles. It only costs about $7 & is easy to do yourself. If oil light comes on at idle,, it is showing signs of oil pump failure. Replace right away.
