  1. I agree about not getting in to the secondary but the cruise control can't work properly unless it can open the throttle all the way sometimes. It's weird to have the car slow down when the throttle is wide open. I have taken all the emissions stuff off too. The PCV is all that is left. There is a ton of information on "Tuning your Weber" and I have made quite a collection of it. I have a folder dedicated to Weber on my PC and keep going over it. I will figure it out eventually with the help of the good folks there on the board.
  2. Hamilton County has had them for about 3 years now.
  3. The wagon passed emissions today. It failed miserably the first time so I waited to put the Weber on before trying again. Now I just gotta figure out why it bogs when the secondary opens. It starts and idles fine. There is no shaking like I experienced before. All the extra vacuum stuff is removed and capped. Here is what I have, 85 GL Wagon, EA82, Weber. I have spent 2 cans of brake cleaner finding the vacuum leaks and believe I have them all resolved. It accelerates smoothly and gains RPM right up to the point the secondary opens. At WOT it gets loud and either slows or just barely maintains speed. I have moved the timing from 8 deg to 12 deg and back. I have moved the vacuum advance tube from the manifold to the port on the carb and will probably move it back. There is a kit on the way from bigjim and I will open the carb up and see which jets are actually in there. I have spent hours looking at threads about the Weber and don't see anything about what I am experiencing. I am open to ideas if anyone would like to throw them at me. Thanks Mark
  4. Thanks Nug We went with the SE 4 (because it was free) and 10:1 pistons along with a digital ignition system. This was mainly my son's project, most of the parts were scrounged or traded for. It's just fun to ride...
  5. Thanks My son and I built it over the last 3 years. It's a bi*** to start when it's cold. Kicker only... It's not primer, satin finish with hand painted pin stripe.
  6. I'm always up for an opportunity to share a look at my toys. The 78 CJ7 The 98 FLHT The Chopper
  7. Sorry for reviving an old thread but I wanted to share something that didn't need it's own. After a year, I finally got my 85 GL wagon back on the road. The first few test drives on the rebuilt engine were OK and a few bugs had to be worked out on vacuum lines. Before the engine RR everything worked including cruise control. During one of my trips to work I tried the cruise and sadly it did not work. On the way back I tried it again and at first it didn't work but I kept trying and got it to come on. That was the last time it worked until last night. I had the under dash panels off to add wiring for an electric cooling fan so I crawled under there to look at the dealer added cruise control stuff. I noticed the switch for the clutch pedal cruise disengage was barely pushed so I adjusted it and walla, a test drive proved I found the problem. Now everything works on my "little old man" again.
  8. Very nice. I'd like to do that to my 85 GL Wagon... Did you fab the lift all yourself?
  9. I'm not sure but I think there was one broken off behind the carb to the drivers side. There were quite a few old brittle hoses and I was in the process of changing them when I decided to take all that stuff off and plug all the ports. That is one of the best things I've done since replacing the engine. The Weber is going on as soon as the adapter gets here.
  10. I bet it's been more than once, you joined USMB didn't you? That's one of the good things I did because my Soob would probably still be under a tarp without the help from this group of great guys. Thanks again for your input. Mark
  11. For the benefit of others that may have a similar problem here is what I found. I feel like a ********************* but it boiled down to a vacuum leak. I know I checked for that but with all that Hitachi support crap in the way I just missed it. I took the covers off the timing belts and verified it was on correctly. One belt was a little loose so I tightened it up. I did a compression check and they were all 150 psi and above. Then I began removing the vacuum operated accessories and plugging vacuum ports. When I started the engine it ran smooth and idled perfectly. I ordered the Weber adapter from Jim Hilton (bigjim5551212) and will be rid or that Hitachi once and for all. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions. Mark
  12. But this is fresh rebuild and boxer engines normally run smooth. Even the old worn out one I replaced was smoother than this one.
  13. Yes it was a complete long block. Will it run at all if one is not on correctly?
  14. Yes, I had hoped it was that simple but I can't find a leak. I've used the carb cleaner spray trick and don't find a thing.
  15. I have an ’85 GL wagon that I just put a rebuilt engine in. The engine came from CCR. I bought it about a year ago and back problems prevented me from installing it until this year (Jan ’08). This is a carbed (Hitachi) engine and yes I have a Weber on the way. I have checked for vacuum leaks and replaced pcv, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Timing is set at 8 deg btdc. The thing shakes when it is below 1200 rpm (idling) but seems to smooth out above that. I don’t know if it lacks power because it is new and my old engine definitely lacked power. It does run better than the old one except for idle. I have searched this problem several times but found nothing specific about what I am experiencing. I appreciate any help on things to check or try. I tried to shoot a vid clip with my phone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCFTE15ZkUw It shakes the whole car when idling.
  16. Mine had a worn out ball joint and the front wheel went into the death wobble when going around a curve above 45 mph. It was almost too simple to fix. Good luck and keep us posted. Mark
  17. Not being a smartass, OEM parts orders go to the lowest bidder.
  18. So, gentlemen. When did Subaru start making PCV valves and thermostats?
  19. Can we get the PCV & crankcase vent hoses somewhere other than a dealer for an 85 EA82 carbed? What are people substituting for the preformed ones? I'm just about finished replacing my engine and need to do something for those hoses.
  20. Thank you Hear's a link for directions. http://knoxville.citysearch.com/profile/9389037/clinton_tn/city_limits_motors.html
  21. Does anyone have length measurements between the two types of axles?
  22. Thank you for the information. I am so frustrated with this it is hard to describe. I wonder how I got so lucky when I replaced them in '98?
