Hi I have a 2001 subaru forester and yesterday I notice when I tried to start it, although it turned over fine it struggled to get started. I had the guys at work (mechanics) take a quick listen to how it sounded, and there guess is the battery because as far as they can tell it is they original. They are going to load test it for me today... But I know Subaru's better than they do (not mechanically of course) and nothing is ever that simple... On the way home I fueled up the car because I was down to 1/4 tank and low and behold the car starts beautifully!!! Any ideas?

Hi everyone, I have been trying to get the coupler needed to charge my A/C system, which I didn't think would be that difficult but apparently it is. I have been to sevveral parts stores asking about the coupler and no one knows what I am talking about or says that you can't get them. So I don't know if I am asking for the right thing. I am looking for the "coupler" that attaches to the low side on the A/C system so that I can get my dad to charge it for me (he does refrideration but does not have a coupler that will fit on the car) Does anyone know what the proper name for this peice is? Also I spoke to one guy who kinda knew what I was talking about but he said i need to know what size for my car as they are all different, any ideas? What about online is there somewhere I can get one of these online? Thanks Denise

From a technical stand point, I have no idea but from experience I don't think it is a must... We have had 1995 Subaru impreza 467,00kms, 2001 legacy 160,000kms, 2001 Subaru forester 204,000kms and a 2006 legacy that has about 40,000kms have always just used regular gas in them, have never had a fuel system problem at all... But again I do not have any technical knowledge regarding cars, just thought I would throw my 2 cents in

Hi I had posted on here a couple of months ago about pulling a spark plug wire and oil coming out, as per all the expert advise I received here I bought the Subaru spark plug gaskets and valve cover gasket. I just brough it in on Friday to have the work done because it was time for it's next oil change, to my dissappointment my mechanic did not change the seals, he did change the plugs and wires as I had requested but he said it is normal to have oil at the spark plug wires, he said all the oil that came out of all 4 would have amounted to maybe a cap full of oil. He also said when he had is jacked up there was no signs of leaking at the valve cover or anywhere else he says it is "bone dry". He said that Honda is the same way when you pull the wires he said there is always quite a bit of oil... This is on my 2001 Forester, my previous car 1995 impreza never had oil on the spark plug wires. Is my mechanic feeding me a line cause he was too lazy to do the gaskets or do I really have nothing to worry about. I tend to trust the advise on here over anything

Ok so it's not on a legacy but i think is is worth mentioning... my 95 impreza had over 400,000kms on it when I wrecked it original transmission and didn't have the transmission fluid touched in at lease 200,000kms (the person who had the car before did nothing with it). I am sure the transmission is still fine in it, where ever it is now...

Ok I think I will stick to regular oil until I change my seals (which seals should be changed?) Dino, that is the brand of synthetic oil? What about the transmission fluid is there a particular brand I should have put in? The timing belt I have been thinking about replacing actually since I bought my car, is it easy enough to get to to see if it needs to be replaced or is it difficult to get to? If it is not to hard to get at to look at I can probably get my mechanic to take a look at it to let me know if it needs to be done, but if it is hard to get at I might as well just get another one and have him replace it once he has put all the time into getting to it. It is too bad I do not know what the repair history is on the car, although it looks like it has been well maintained you never know

Well as for leaking I have a leak at the spark plug gasket because of a place way over filling my oil last oil change but I have got the seals and they are going on as well when it goes it (spark plug gaskets and valve cover gasket). Other than that when I got the car the mechanics that looked it over said it was bone dry no leaks at all. But I do not know when the seals were last replaced if ever, the car dealership I bought the car from did not know much about it's history or anything about Subarus. I am concerned about starting problems with the seals I read alot of posts on here and have seen some indicating leak issues after switching, but I have heard that synthetic is much better for the car. As for the Transmission flush the Mechanic said he would just drain and re-fill it, I don't want to have to get it done over and over because of the expense (100.00 a shot) I would prefer to do it once and get it done with but that being said I would want to do which ever is best for the car

Hi everyone, I am taking my car in tomorrow to have an oil change and transmission fluid change and just want everyones expert advise... I have a 2001 Subaru Forester with a little over 200,00kms and I want to know if I should go for a synthetic oil or regular oil as far as I know it has only ever had regular oil in it (I have only owned the car for 4 months) I have heard that synthetic is better, but how much better? and do I have to worry about any problems if the car has never ran on synthetic? Also I am getting the tranny fluid changed my mechanic says just drain and fill it, is that right or should the system be flushed out? I thought it was supposed to be flushed but again I don't know anything about cars. Any preferences on oils? Thanks again to everyone for always such great support

Without more info on the connector I can't help you on that. Thanks for the input on the CDs. I think I will give one a try and see how it is. As for the connector, I am not sure how else to explain it, I am terrible at trying to explain this stuff. The one side of the connector comes from the wiring that comes into the car along with the stereo and lighter, the other side appears to be coming from the back of the controls for the heater and A/C...This probably won't help much, but it is worth a shot.

Does anyone know what the connector is behind the radio and heater that is purple/back wires on one side tannish orange with white stripe and purple on other side? (2001 Forester L) I was trying to figure out why my A/C was not working over the weekend and though I had it figured out when I notice a plug that had come apart (or was maybe never plugged together) Anyway I took of a piece of blue tape that went around the clip on the plug and plugged the two sides together, I just want to make sure I haven't done something I shouldn't have... Also I have noticed that you can get service/repair manuals on CD from Ebay, has anyone ever got one of these? are they any good? Thanks!

Update... My Dad just checked the switch for continuity it is open. He then bypassed the switch and the compressor ran fine. He is a refridgeration mechanic but not automotive, he has the manifold and gauages for the a/c but does not have the adapters to fit the car, does anyone know where we could get the adapters, or if there is anything else we should be checking first

Hello, Well yesterday was the first nice day since I bought my 2001 forester, perfect time to check out my A/C or would have been if it worked! I really do not know much about cars at all, but with the help of my not very technical father this is what I know... 1. The compressor is not coming on 2. the fuse behind the coin tray (#17 I think) is fine 3. the a/c relay fuse is ok in the fuse panel under the hood 4. The little green light does not light up when you push in the a/c button, all other lights work on the dash 5. we pulled out thr radio and heater there was a cable unplugged purple/back wires on one side tannish orange with white stripe and purple on other side. we plugged them together no change (no idea what they are for) 6. All belts are intact and seem to be working fine. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am pretty sure when I bought the car (In Dec) the light was coming on when I puched in the A/C button, the only thing I have done to the car is install a new cd player Also does anyone know what that plug was that I mentioned in #5 and anyone have a wiring diagram for an 01 forester L? Thanks everyone for the continued support!!!!

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help... I do not have all of the details but apparently My uncle's brand new subaru outback (less than 700kms) just died... He had the cruise control set and all the sudden it started to accelorate then started going quite slow the check engine and service engine light came on then all the lights lit up on the dash and it just completely shut down. They had to have it towed to the subaru dealer and apparently from the time it ws there the dealer could not figure out what was wrong and it was running fine. The dealer put the key in the ignition and it satarted up fine and ran fine, he gave it back and said it must have been a computer malfunction and it shoudn't happen again

Hello All, With Spring finally peaking through I want to get out and buy some stuff for my 01 Forester... Firstly I want to have the transmission flushed I do not know the last time it was done because I just bought the car in December Does anyone have an opinion on the type of fluid I should purchase? I don't know if mileage makes a difference but it is almost broken in at 195,000kms. Secondly I want to do the timing belt, and water pump, should it be ok to get after market for these part lastly just some general bits the trim in the front wheel wells was removed by whoever had the car before, does any one know if I can get something after market or do I have to take out a second morgage and buy it direct from a dealer? The back trim in the wheel well is starting to pull away I notice that there is some sort of adhesive on it, can I buy this somewhere and re-glue it back on? Ok this is the last one... I have a ton of stone chips along the front of the hood of the car should I have the whole hood re-painted or I know that there is some sort of a compound that can be applied to blend them in.... Again everyone thanks for all of your continued help, you have been great!!!

Minekee, I took it back to them on Friday and drained out the oil and refilled it and then let me know how much it would be to change out the seal, they say there is no way of knowing if the oil overfill caused the leak. That it would have blown all the seals if it was from over filling th oil (I doubt that but what can you do). also they can't find where the oil is leaking from the had it up o nthe hoise showing me that the complete underside of the car is "bone dry" not that I would no the difference anyway!

Ok I have read through the posts on having too much oil in your engine, and all of the sudden it occured to me... I had my oil chaned in my 01 Forester about a week ago, 4 or 5 days later when my Dad was changing my spark plugs the r/s first spark plu hole had oil in it (which I posted previously). Yesterday my parents were saying that there were oil spots on the snow on he driveway (unlikely their car they have an 07 Legacy with about 15,000kms on it). Anyway I checked my oil in my car (3 times and the a 4th by someone else) and it is way over full. Idon't know how to explain it but I will try... The dipstick curves in two places the bottom has the "e" and the "F" marker the second curve looks the same but with no markers the level is almost the top of the second curve. I just bought this car at the end of December and had it checked out by the trck machanics where I work, no signs of leaks when I bought it. I also have been watching very carefully of leaks puttind cardboard uner the car etc. No sign of leaks unitl this last oil change. Could this over fill be the explination for the oil in the spark plug and the oil drips on the snow? I am goig to have one of the guys at work check the oil for me again today, but before I go to the place that did the oil change I want to make sure I know what to tell tell them... Thanks again!
