  1. Hi, About 6 months ago my check engine light would come on periodically the day after I filled-up and would stay on for a couple days before going off again, I had it checked for codes several times, I can not remember what the code number was but everyone kept telling me it was the gas cap that was not put on properly. I am very careful when putting on the gas cap, and have since bought a new one. In the last 2 months my check engine light has been on almost constantly, until about 2 weeks ago when I filled up at a different station (Petro Canada instead of pioneer). My check engine light went off the day after I filled up and has not come back on since (I have filled up there about 3 times). Now I noticed that Petro-Canada uses some sort of fuel additive for cleaner emissions in their fuel... So Bad fuel vs good fuel or is there something going wrong with my car (Forester), and the new fuel I am using is just a temporary fix?
  2. Becareful with that too, even marked as a gift sometimes they still ding you with duties, and don't forget about brokerage fees... They best thing to do is take a drive over to buffalo for the day and get some tires put on and drive back... no problem...no duties and all that other mess.
  3. I had an Impreza now own a Forester and Drive may Dad's legacy once and a while... That being said, the forester feels like the Impreza in handling and I find it handles way better than the Legacy. Even my dad who's last two cars have been legacys prefers the handling of the Forester. As for comfort I agree the Legacy is more comfortable although it could do with a little more head room (the 07 model anyway). Gas mileage I do not know much about it, but I think I get a little bit better mileage in the forester than the legacy. The back seat room is far from roomy. As for reliability I don't know, my forester has 222,000kms on it, but I have only owned it for 10 months (put 29,000kms on it in that time) I have yet to have any serious problems, as for my dad's legacy he trades them in every four years so they are gone before any problems creep up. So if you are looking for comfort and room go with the legacy, if you want something a little peppier and want the handling go for the Forester
  4. I am getting may 2001 forester painted after someone was nice enough to scrap the heck out of the side door in a parking lot and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could order the stickers for front doors and maybe even the badge on the front and the subaru lettering on the back... I have seen a few online subaru dealerships that have the badge and the subaru lettering but the forester stickers for the front doors seem to be impossible to find, and of course I am trying to get them as cheap as possible. I was quoted 120.00 for the subaru lettering for the back when i called a dealership here in canada. Thanks Denise
  5. Sorry I just noticed you are from buffalo NY, I go there often shopping lol Do you know of any good mechanics in that area...I have been thinking about taking it in in the states for a while because everything just seems cheaper there and people generally know what a Subaru is there
  6. I will see if I can take a look once I get home from work, and see what they are going on about... Cars, they are so wonderful... It is going in next week because someone hit it in a parking lot and took off so it is getting all the body work done and a complete paint job, now all the cv boots and aparently the transmission output seals are going to need to be done eventually (that was their exact words)
  7. When I was replacing the CV boot the other month some people were mentioning reman subaru axles for like 60.00 or so. Does anyone know where I can get these? I live in Canada and everything I have seen here have been 200.00 +
  8. I bought the car used this past December I do not know about the repair history on it...
  9. That is the one that went on mine, I just looked back in my posts it happened just a little over 2 months ago I have 220,000kms (or 136701 miles) on mine. I just find it strange the rest were fine 2 months ago and now all of them are apparently torn... Not to mention that I had to remind them that they just changed the p/s inner boot and all of the sudden it was only 3 that needed to be replaced..
  10. OK, so my passenger side inner cv boot had split and I had it replaced(OEM) at my last oil change. My car just went in for another oil change today and now they are telling me that all my cv boots are split (inner and outter) when I reminded them that they had just replaced the passenger side inner they said oh yeah all of them but that one... they are telling me it is normal for this to happen, I can't see loosing 3 boots in 3 month normal... or all four in the last 6 month. Can anyone shed some light on what might be happening, or if this is actually normal? thanks Denise
  11. You can also use that wire dry stuff, I used it on my spark plug wires that were badly worn and sparking, I sprayed it on once and they were good until I changed them out about a week later...
  12. I have noticed over the past couple of weeks that the driver side door has become a little difficult to close also the plastic coating over the striker pin is all cracked. One of the guys where I work looked at it and said it seems the door has dropped just slightly. He said that some cars you can replace just the bushings for the door hinges to fix the problem. Does anyone know if you can just get the bushings from subaru or will I have to replace the hinges? Also how important in the plastic covering the striker will I need to replace this too? Thanks
  13. Too bad you live so far away then!!! I see posts all of the time here with parts pricing in the U.S, for some reason in Canda Subaru parts are always so much more expensive. I bought a cargo cover and bug deflector online from the states paid as much or more for shiping than I did for the actual items and it was still about 1/2 of what I woyl have paid here.
  14. I think I will try that, Subaru qouted me 75.00 for a new gas cap, and my mechanic said I should stay away from aftermarket because they are usually not a good fit... too bad because they are about 15.00 I just looked on line and it looks like I can order an OEM for about 40.00 cdn with shipping and everything (from the U.S). Wish there was somewhere in Canada that had cheap Subaru parts!!!
  15. Wow Did nto realize they were so cheap, I had to replace the passenger side axle in my impreza a couple years ago and the part was about 250.00 (aftermarket) and I think about 3hr labour.
  16. Okay, well I have ordered a OEM boot from Subaru, and I have an appointment to have the boot replaced on wednesday. They have quoted me 74.00 (cdn labour) and I think the boot is going to be about 60.00cdn. It seems like I should be ok to drive it and a garbage back trick it seems like a good idea, only question though is will the heat from the exhaust not melt the plastic? Also just curious why is everyone so quick to want to replace the axle when a boot goes?
  17. I tore a CV boot last night it is torn on the top and leaking onto the exhaust making an oh so wonderful smell!!! I have it in at the shop right now and they are unable to get parts until tomorrow or Monday, I am on vacation until Wednesday, any opinions on if I should be able to go for 4 days without doing any damage to the cv joint (it is the p/s inner CV joint boot). Also I have priced both an after market and a OEM boot the OEM is about double as to be expected, any opinions on which I should get? I do not mind paying the extra money if the OEM is the better choice, but do not want to spend the money if it really doesn't make a difference.
  18. Hi Can anyone help, I just brought my car in to have the check engine light cleared. It goes on and off every few days or so, it has been doing it since I put in a fuel injector cleaner in it about a month ago (may just be coincidence). Anyway I searched the threads and did not find an answer on this one, according to the garage you need a special tool that you can only get from Subaru in order to fix the problem. Can anyone give me any information on this? Thanks Denise
  19. Ok I got the results back, they did not give me a code but said there is a mis-fire in the #1 cylinder (is this the passanger side?) I have a leaking valve cover gasket on the passenger side so there is oil in the spark plug holes, this was suppose to be replaced about 2 month ago but my mechanic said that it was nothing there was suppose to be a little bit of oil in there...I have the gasket set from Subaru, and I am going to get this replaced on Thursday, is it safe to drive my car until then? They have cleared the codes and so far the light has not come back on (about 35km drive from work to home). Also the spark plug wire that I have a boch premium mag core, are these ok?
  20. Well I just dropped it off at meineke they are just behind where I work, so we will see what they decide to charge me, although they have been pretty good to me in the past... They are changing my front valve cover gasket and spark plug rings/gaskets on Thursday that is what really has me worried. My regular mechanic packed it in and I do not know who else to take it to.
  21. Well thanks for the information I am going to drive it over to the place next door at lunch and ask them to read the codes for me I will post them here when I get them. Thanks everyone for your continued support! I am clueless when it comes to cars, but I read the posts on here faithfully every day!
  22. Well The Battery was old, just assumed it had died, late last week it was slow to get started it is the orginal Battery, so 7ish years old and 208,000kms. I am trying to remember which wires I used I am pretty sure I got them at NAPA so they are for sure aftermarket. Just seemed strange that it happended with in about 2 mins after the battery was swapped out. I will take it over to the place I get the oil changed and see if they can read the codes this afternoon... One other thing though the Battery I bought, the only one that I could get in the small little town I was in was a sure start and it said "manual transmissions" on it, the guy assured me that this would be okay, not that he seemed to have the slightest clue, but I had no choice...could this be causing a problem as my car is automatic?
  23. I have an 01 Subaru Forester, I just had to replace the battery yesterday and since I changed it I have had the check engine light on. At first it was flashing and then going off. Now it is on solid with the exception of it flashing twice this morning on the way to work. The flashing seem irratic one time it flashed 12 times and then went off another time it flashed 8 times, 2 times...etc I don't know if that means anything... I have checked the fuel cap it is secure and I am always careful when putting it on because I have had that problem before. The spark plugs and wires are only about 1 1/2 months old and I check to make sure they were secure. Any ideas???
