  1. Hi Guys, I have a EA82 motor in my Trike that I just found out has cracked heads and I need to either find other heads or find a complete motor or car and swap out the heads or motor. My question is this: My motor is a carbed 1985 EA82. Are the heads the same on the EA82 that have fuel injection on them, 86/87 and maybe 1988 modles? Also does anyone out there have a couple heads for the EA82 that you would part with? Thanks, Bob
  2. Sorry I'm new to the board and have not seen the wanted board, but I have located one. Thanks all. Bob
  3. Anyone have a Dizzy they would part with for the 1985 EA82 1.8 motor. I fried mine and it seems that these parts are no longer available to purchase. Or if you know where the parts can be found, please respond. Must be in working condition. Also does anyone know if the Dizzy for a 1981 EA81 would work. I have found a couple on Ebay for the EA81 motor, but don't know if they will fit. Thanks, Bob
  4. Thanks for your reply. I'll keep you in mind if I decide to go this way. I'm just in the planning stages of my next build and I'm still not sure if I'm going to go with another water cooled motor or go back to the VW. It does help knowing that the parts I would need to make it work are available. If I did that, I'd plug off everything like I did on my 85 and run a Werber 32/36. So far my little 1.8 is doing a great job and runs very well. Thanks, Bob
  5. in reference to the 1.8 motors: I know they were carbed up until 86 I think. But would the intake manifold from a carbed motor fit on say a 1988 FI motor. I ride and build Trikes and I just don't want to mess with FI but I want to pick up a little newer motor and strip it down and put a carb on it. Can I do that or is there some things that are very different in the motor on a FI model that would keep it from working very well. I love my Trike with the 85 1.8 motor but those are becoming pretty hard to find with less than 200,000 miles on them. I have found a 88 1.8 with just over 130,000 at a good price and thought if I could buy a carbed manifold for it and swap it out, I would have another sweetheart motor. Thats my next question. Can I still purchase a new manifold for say a 1985 that was carbed? All replys will be appreicated. Thanks, Bob
  6. Thanks a lot you guys for all your help. After trying and trying, I finally took what was suspose to be a freshly rebuilt Alt, to the parts house and had them test it. It was no good so I got a new one and hooked it up and its putting out 14.5 just like it should. The new came with a resister right on the Alt. So I'm in business now. Just need a water temp gage now and I'm complete. Got my pipes built yesterday and drove it home. Sounds like a big block V8 now. Actually its louder than I had wanted it to be but its not too bad. It does have a real nice deep mellow rumble to it. I start my regestration process next week then I'll be looking for some brakes in the weather so I can get it up in the foot hills for a goos test. You guys have been a big help, Thanks Bob
  7. Ok thanks again General, I'll post my results as soon as I'm able to try it. bob
  8. This is the photo I picked out that seems to be the one for my setup. I don't understand about the resister though. Bob
  9. Thanks Ravin, With you and Generls help I think I know what wires to stick where now. I'll know for sure in a couple days. Bob
  10. Thay you so much for being patiant with me on this matter. I did read the stuff in the links, most of it anyway and I think I'm beginning to get the picture now. I'm taking my Trike to the Muffler shop this morning to get pipes fitted so I won't be able to try the wiring for a coule days. I took my Alt to a shop and had it gone through, new brushes and such. Came back looking like new and I assume when they do that they also test them to know they work properly. So I expect it to charge properly once I get it wired right. I'll let you know when I get it back and try again. Thanks, Bob
  11. Well I'm confuses now. I did try it the way I stated in the earlier post and got nothing. Ok, this is how I am hooked up. The terminal marked battery I have going to the main battery terminal on my starter soleniod. Its getting constant direct power from the battery. This does not go through any switch. Now if I was to connect the other wire to this same post on the soleniod, it too would have constant direct power from the battery. Is this what your telling me I need to do? then the bottom of the T terminal on the Alt would go to the light. I assume the light then would be grounded. If that is correct I have to wonder if this wouldn't be a drain on the battery even when its not running. I have always thought the light should come on when the key is turned on then go off as soon as the motor started. Thats why I assumed one of those T terminals would go through the switch. ??? I am electrical challenged to a larg extent with this kind of stuff so be as spicific as possible so I can follow you. Also I was trying to get this info from the book and noticed they refer to a voltage regulater. Externial for early models, internial for late models. I assume my 85 would be considered early. I don't have a regulater. I assumed the Alt had an internal reg in it..Yea, or Nay. Perhaps part of my problem is no regulater? Bob:confused:
  12. Ok, if I understand this right, the top of the T wire will go to the switch and the bottom of the T will go to the light. Sounds reasonable to me. thank you bob
  13. Thanks, thats what I needed to know, I would have guessed that was the way they went but I don't like to guess with electrical items. Bob:)
  14. Thanks General, I still need just a little more info here. I don't have any part of the wiring harness for the motor or Alt. I don't have any way of telling what one of those two blade connecters would be for the light and what one would connect at the main junction with the Batt wire. If you could pull your plug and tell me what one would be the black/while wire I can go from there. As you know one blade is - the other l. Thanks again for your help. Bob
  15. Thanks for the response, based on that answer I think I know what to do, but I do hope to get a few more answers just to be sure about it. If one goes to the switch and the other to the light on the dash, then it probably won't matter what one goes where. I'm used to the VW single wire alt that has to have power through a light to tickle the alt to make it charge. However, the VW atls only have 1 connecter besides the battery one to go through the light, so this throws me a little. So I'll hope for a couple other answers before I start hooking up wires. Bob QUOTE=mellow65]i know this doesn't completely answer your question. on the two prong plug, one needs keyed power and the other is for the idiot light on the dash. now the sad thing is i don't know which one is which because i haven't gotten that far in doing my alternator yet. some one will chime in with the correct answer here soon
  16. Hi guys, Need some help wiring my Alt that I have on my EA82 1.8 Carbed motor that I have in my Trike. Since I don't have the normal wiring harness I don't know where things go. On the back of the Alt there is 1 connection that says Battery on it. Thats a no brainier. The other connection is recessed in the body of the alt and has 2 blade type connectors. Does any one know where these two connections will go. I know in some cases there might have been an external regulater to connect to, but I don't know if this Alt requires a regulater or if its got the internal regulater like so many now have. A little help would be appreciated. Thanks. Bob
  17. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I will be watching the temps real close unyil I'm very sure my setup is doing a good job of cooling. I have an oil cooler on hand anyway should I feel the need for it. Bob
  18. Either way I don't think it will matter in my case as I'm not even using a fan off the motor and I removed the clutch part too, so I guess either one will work. Bob
  19. Yes the full automatic trans is from a squareback as is the whole rear carrier. Bob
  20. Hi General, I want to thank you personally for your kind assistence in helping me get my motor setup right. Everything went like clock work. Right now I have a 50/50 mixture in it but I will need to drain that when I remove the pump. When you say 30/70, is that 30 water or 70 water. I bought a premix 50/50 and have never seen anything different than that in premix. ?? Thanks, I'll check out the Nissan Alt. Extra Amp's are always nice to have. Bob:banana:
  21. In my case I have air conditioning by mother nature. I guess you could call that factory air. LOL As for the car it came from, I have no idea. When I get ready to change it I'll just take the old pump with me. Thanks, Bob
  22. At first I thought my motor was a 1982 but with the help of a couple guys on this forum, I found out it had to be an 85 to 87 year. So I'm calling the motor a 1985 OHC 1.8. The Trike I put the motor in is brand new. I just finished building it and in about a month when I'm able to get it regestered, it will be titled as a 2007 SPCS Motorcycle. See pics in the photo section under my name. Bob
  23. I have added a couple photos of the finished Trike in the photo section under my profile name. You can see them there. Bob
  24. Just thought I'd give you all an update on my Subaru powered Trike I have been building over these past 3 months. I received my Kennedy Engineered Adapter Plate on Thursday afternoon 12/28/06 and began to figure out how it went together. Fri I finished bolting up the adapter and mounting the motor on the Trike. I was still missing a couple items for the motor that I had forgot to pick up at the Auto parts store. Fan belts and the vacuum line needed for the auto transmission. But I've had this motor sitting in a dirty old bard for the past 4 years and I was really wanting to know if it was going to fire up after all that time and how many problems I muight encounter making it run. I still don't have any exhaust pipes for it either, but I went ahead and added the oil, filled the 2 little goldwing radiators with 50/50 antifreeze and poured about a half gallon of gas in the tank. I turned on the key and let the fuel pump run for about 10 seconds and hit the starter. I was in total disbeliefe as it fired up instantly and settled right down to a very nice gentle purr. I didn't have to make a single adjustment to anything. It just runs like a well oiled swiss watch. I am very impressed with this little motor. I have driven it around my storage facility lot where I live and work a couple times to just get the water moving and see what if anything was going to brake or spring a leak or whatever. Not having a fan belt I used a piece of rope to turn the water pump so I held it down to around 10 mph the first couple times out. Today I got belts for it and vacuum line and was able to drive it a little more. So far only a couple minor issues have come up. It looks like I might have to replace the water pump as its leaking a little water from the weep hole. But it may be to early to be sure about that. I'll watch that for a few days and see what happens. I get a couple drops of oil from near the heads after its turned off. May just need to tighten some bolts. And it looks like the Alt will need to be replaced as I'm not getting anything from that Anyone out there have a better Alt that they like for this motor or should I stay with what is stock? It would need to fit the same bracket I have but that looks pretty standard for mounting. So needless to say, I'm very happy with my motor. The Weber carb is very responsive to the throttle and it seems to have a very good power band throuhout the throttle range. I think this will be a very nice Trike for my wife and I. I think I made the right choice in motors as well. The only thing now is to see how well these radiators do in the hot Calif summer. Time will tell. And above all I want to thank those of you who gave me a lot of information about how to set this motor up. Your help was greatly appreicated. I have added a couple photos to my photo page and once I have the Trike all back together, I'll post a completed photo. Thanks again. Bob:grin:
  25. Ok thanks again General. I no longer have an EGR so I'll just leave the rest alone. The only other thing I might do is go ahead and hook up the PCV valve. I'm still not 100% about that item, but I guess with the info received about it, it can't hurt to have it and just might help in the long haul. Bob
