  1. Take the trans out of gear, rev to the correct RPM, put into appropriate gear. Easier than shifting with a clutch...on paper. If the syncros are good, no problem, I used to drive like that all the time, as I would get lazy. If you don't have good syncros, or syncros at all, it will be a bit tough, but not that hard. Problem is city driving is quite difficult, but as long as you plan ahead it isn't difficult, and I don't quite see the safety issue, either. You can quite easily take a car out of gear without a clutch, I rarely ever use a clutch when I am braking, unless to downshift.
  2. The Jeep 6 is a pretty stout motor. I know of many that have lasted a long long time. However, it's everything attached to the motor that goes out on them. My mom's 2001 has 50,000ish miles on it, been through 2 water pumps, 4 thermostats, 5 A/C Compressors, 2 coil packs, transmission is being finicky, and the oil pump needed to be replaced. But then again, all of that was under warrantee by Carmax, and I am sure they used garbage for parts. P.S. When doing oil changes, the oil pressure sender is in a bad place, so when you muscle the filter off, you can hit it and break it, so you have to be quite careful about it.
  3. I bought 2 jack stands from harbor freight for about $17.
  4. You could just chop the cat off, although after that it will be quite loud.
  5. When my bro's 2000 Camaro's started going, it whirred like an airoplane.
  6. You should be fine. Just slap some thick ol' grease in there from time to time, as far as safety, it might brake and you will be stranded, but I'd probably drive it.
  7. I had '90 ST (base model) with the 1.6 4afe. I didn't like that gear box in any way, apart from it accelerated quite fast. I also had the problem with it where the shifter wouldn't stay in fifth, and my differential started making horrible noises about 5 seconds after I bought it. Not really pertinent, however.
  8. If the speed of the engine changes, then it works fine, it just has close 4th-to-5th gear ratios. In my Celica, shifting from 4th to 5th yielded a 1000 RPM difference at the top of the gear(6200-to-5200), and about 500 RPM on the highway.
  9. Seafoam helped mine out; same problem, put seafoam in, and it started working. I believe seafoam to be the most useful automotive chemical.
  10. Hey, at least he doesn't pitch rods like my first two daily drivers did; (CAUTION:RANT) a Volvo and a Celica, and they are SUPPOSED to be reliable. You'll get through it, all the cars I have had were like that, the Hatch was just one thing after another, the Celica, I bought a transmission for just before it pitched the rod, the Volvo, well, I'm not quite sure what I got for that thing when all was said and done. We had to redo the brakes on the Coupe I got from Milemaker-they stopped working when my friend was in rush-hour traffic on the interstate. (Rant complete) These things happen, and it is NEVER the end of the world, you just have to beat them until they give for you, which eventually happens, I'm told.
  11. Dude, you're quite weird. But be advised, that isn't necassarily a bad thing:). But back to topic, if you can keep massaging Bucky into greatness, then that would be great. Welding isn't too hard, so long as you have a quality welder, though it takes a lot of time to get good, though, as I am horrible still. Make sure you remember him if he loses regular driver status. Don't just keep him for wagon duty or anything like that, take him out and keep him clean, fixed, and go on a few leisurely journeys with him. Bottom line, as long as you don't forget him, and can fix him, keep him. If you can't, give him to someone who can, and don't let him sit rusting in your yard or garage.
  12. I say congraturations! Having a non-driveable car sucks eggs.
  13. I meant putting the jack stands there. If I put them much further back the car will do a teeter-totter on me. No, I don't plan on returning it to show-room shape, but I will need a car for the next couple of years, and I wished to know if I should sell it now, part it out, or drive it 'til it dies.
  14. Well, thanks for everyones support. That's all I needed to hear, I guess I will be welding the frame together.
  15. Thanks a lot for readin' and the words of encouragement. I'm just really discouraged at the moment, as my car requires a lot of work, and I have barely even driven it yet. Also, I am going to have to drive 140 miles to Chicago, potentially, to get to school every day, and I need that to hold together. I also kind of miss my sport-type car Celica, and have found a 1984 Pontiac Fiero for $300 that I may go for, but I do not know as of yet. I can weld(rather poorly), but practice can make better, I'd guess. Also, something I forgot to say, every time I jack it up, it crunches rather badly. P.S. I just noticed that this is a not rather flowing post, so I apologize, but I'm not a mood to correct it P.S.S. I think "rarer" is a word, I've used it before
  16. Well, give it to me straight, look at the pics, those are of my frame rail and such, is it dead, or is there anything I can do about it? http://s167.photobucket.com/albums/u122/Zebisko/
  17. Good luck! I personally like wagons as well, good for you that you can finally fix him:)
  18. Well, something was bound to break eventually, right? The bushing from the leading rod broke and came out, and now I believe the tie rod to be bent(could have been before, I'm not sure). So I am going to have to replace those. Now, can I replace the inner tie-rod easy? I don't think the outer is bent, but I don't really know. Thanks in advance. P.S. I will actually have pics tomorrow, my batteries are dead and need recharging.
  19. My brother hears and believes it to be a turbo bearing, potentially. An idea to look at. The noise doesn't sound to be bad engine mojo.
  20. How heavy footed are you around town? When I was drove it with my foot buried, my gas mileage was about 15 mpg. Now I have settled down(and a lot more highway driving) and I get 30 mpg. If you stay out of the secondaries, it helps a lot with mileage. The hesitation is probably just the carb being clogged and if spraying it didn't help, run some Seafoam through the gas, and if that doesn't help, I think you might need a carb rebuild. At least, that's what I would believe.
  21. I'm thrilled, I just got my y-pipe together, as my old one fell apart. It was interesting as it was the first time I had ever welded, so it looks disgusting, but it works! Pretty well, I might add, 2" pipes equal length. About $45 in all, used a MIG welder on it. Tomorrow I'll add the cat I got for $30. I'll give pics tomorrow, kinda late now.
  22. Hey, my brother drove around for 2 years with non-opening windows in his Volvo, and it turned out to only be a switch. At least you checked your plugs:)
  23. Well, I figured it would be something stupid. But, hey, it works now! Good beans:banana:
