  1. The timing light tells me I'm TDC right now. Don't get me wrong, she runs 'okay', but it seems when I go to 'start off' she needs a little more assistance/gas than what I'm used to giving her. I'll play around with different timing hacks and see what she gives me.
  2. Not sure about your 94, but I just learned a lot of my 90 loyale: When #1 is on compression (loosen the plug quite a bit and listen for air coming out while you manually crank it) the flywheel should be at the middle of the three marks on the flywheel (may have to crank it twice-around). When on compression/middle mark, left pulley should be straight up (pulley mark aligned with belt cover mark). Turn the crank around to the middle mark again. Right cam should be pointing up (left will be pointing straiight down). Short story: Left and right cam pulleys need to be 180 degress off from each other (left pulley straight up and right pulley straight down, or vise versa) while the flywheel points to the middle belt alignment mark (NOT TDC). There is an excellent walkthrough of timing belt installaton on here that I followed. If I find it I'll put a link in this chain.
  3. I'm having bad luck with my little loyale and its axles. Tried the NAPA ones a few months ago and sure enough, click click click click! Before that was CarQuest. I've seen good reviews on here about AutoZone's axle brands, as well as a small operation that just makes axles. I'll try to find the post again and slap it here if I find it.
  4. 90 Loyale, 1.8, non-turbo Just finished getting the engine back in from a gasket set job. I have her timed at TDC and she seems sluggish. Could it run better at BTDC or better ATDC? Note: all plugs/wires/cap/rotor are new. I have a noisy lifter (noisier than what it was before I yanked the engine) but I'm replacing the four on that side tomorrow.
  5. Famous symtom of a blown gasket or cracked head.
  6. Hmmmm, I had no idea this was something that could 'go away', I'm pleased. Although the lifters never left the head during the gasket kit job, they sure may have emptied. I'll finish tuning her up (and cleaning her up) and take a drive. I guess I was paranoid of causing more damage with that loud clicking going on. I'll also check into the re-build place for future reference. Thanks for the replies guys! subaruguru: hold that thought
  7. Gloyale, (YOUR INBOX IS FULL SO I COULDN'T SEND YOU A PM) Sure! I'll glady cover the shipping for the lines. I appreciate the offer! I'll PM my private data to you. As soon as you know the amount, zap me an E-mail or PM. I was considering removing the pump instead, but since the lines are 'solid', I thought it might be hard to get/keep them clear for engine removal/install. Eric
  8. 90 Loyale, 1.8, non-turbo, 4wd, 270,000 miles I just finished re-installing the engine from a full gasket set job. I rationalized my way out of doing a valve job while I had the engine out somehow. I fired her back up yesterday and wouldn't you know it? An raise the hair on the back of the neck "CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK....." from the cylinder 1-3 side. I'm assuming a bad lifter (or two, or three, or all) so I plan on doing all four on that side. Yes, just the four on that side. Those things ain't cheap. Anyway, I understand the basic concept of removing the timing belt, removing the cam, removing the rockers/lifters, inserting the new lifters, etc, etc. Do I need to prime the new lifters at all? Any comments/suggestions/lessons learned would be great. Parts arrive Saturday. Wish me luck. I need to get this 60 mile a day commuter back on the road.
  9. I just did my first engine removal and full gasket job. It's really not all that complicated. An engine stand makes it NICE. Do a gasket, spin the engine, do a gasket, spin the engine..... You seem to have your head screwed on right, I'd bet you could do it yourself easily.
  10. 1990 Loyale, 1.8, non-turbo, 270,000 miles. While re-installing my engine from a full gasket set job, I did something stupid. I stripped the male connector on one of the pinon PS lines that connects to one of the pump lines! It's definitely leaking. It's leaking just in idle after the re-birth of the engine on its intial re-start (not driven yet). Is there a easy/cheap fix? Please tell me I don't need to buy a whole new pinon set. The junk yards are Loyale-less.
