Roof Racks
rweddy replied to XSKI712's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI used to sell used rack systems, Thule is the best. Yakima is ok but rusts very early, I would sell 15 year old Thule racks in perfect condition Yakima's tend to rust after about 3-5 years.

Purchasing a Legacy with rebuilt 2.2L
rweddy replied to recurve's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX99 was the last year of the 2.2 motor in the legacy as stated in other posts. I would be more worried about who did the work on the motor. Unless it was done by a Subaru specialty shop I would walk away. Also $4500 is not that great of a deal, especially with that kind of mileage and the motor issues. I also wonder what other maintance was lacking if they did not take care timing belt. i.e. did they change the oil regularly? Probably not.

Need advice on tires
rweddy replied to tjfaenza's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHave you ever used a true dedicated snow tire? I agree these are great all season tires, but there are no all season tires out there that handle snow anywhere near a full on snow tire. Expect for Nokian WRs. I learned this last year, my wife's Honda was terrible in the snow, got a set of snow tires and her Honda did better than my outback in the snow. Now I have dedicated snow tires on my outback and the difference is amazing.

98 Forester/Head Caskets
rweddy replied to lefty2053's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXRun away from that shop!! If you are in Colorado there are lots of very good honest Subaru specialty shops, they also would have properly diagnosed the issue to begin with and saved you the $350 dollars. http://www.s-wingsstuff.com/ http://www.strictlyauto.com/ http://www.roosonly.com/

01 legecy head gasket leaking coolant
rweddy replied to bowjam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhy? The only reason many pull the motor is it is easier to do the work, this will have no effect on the repair.

Timing belt autocheck?
rweddy replied to centrino's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX$500 is way cheaper than a new motor. Visual is ok, but... one of my older Subaru's the belt looked perfect and snapped 2 days later. Better safe than sorry on an interference motor imo.

Now a Subaru Owner
rweddy replied to Stinky fingerz's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWelcome, only real issue is possible Head Gasket issues with the 2.5 motors. Just watch for overheating, and if necessary take it to a Subaru specialty shop and have them put in updated gaskets.

just an observation
rweddy replied to mikem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYea not many in Hungry,Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, or the UK. But there a quite a few in Peru. I think it is also because there is no diesel motors from subaru.

Change Fuel Filter
rweddy replied to wrongturninwv's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAnother trick is idle the car, pull the fuse on the fuel pump, then let the car die. This will pull most the gas out the fuel lines so you can change it.

1-winter tire solution?
rweddy replied to dromond's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe best single tire out there is the Nokian WR "All-Weather Plus" these are the only tires out there that are true all-season with the winter rating. Or like others have said, get a set of cheap used snow tires of ebay or craigslist.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *updatetd w/ pic*
rweddy replied to fnlyfnd's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXActually it shows that the 2.5 motor does last. 96 with auto's only engine option was the 2.5, 96 5spd were the last of the 2.2.

Where to buy steel rims
rweddy replied to scruffycyclist's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYep, I just got a set of 4 factory outback rims for my studded winter tires for $150 on CL.

Any Ideas besides replacement?????
I would just find a matching color fender, way less time and effort than fixing it.

Timing Belt Question
rweddy replied to wrongturninwv's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYea I like the fact this will fit on a 93 outback, except this model didn't start until 95. I will risk parts like alternators, brake pads, etc, on aftermarket, but not precision parts such as timing belts, engine seals, etc.

96 legacy oil leaks

96 legacy oil leaks

96 legacy oil leaks
rweddy replied to subbydoo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere are two cam seals, but the rears usually do not have issues. Just replace the seal, not reason to replace the pump. If you have records on the timing belt then also change this since you are in there anyway.

96 legacy oil leaks
rweddy replied to subbydoo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSubaru 2.2/2.5 motors have some know leaking issues. Is the leak at the front of the motor? If so there are three possible culprits for this, cam seals, crank seal, and oil pump seal. The reason I asked about your timing belt is that you said you have 75k on your car and you need to change you timing belt at 60k. So if you did not have your timing belt changed at 60k you can do it all at once. While you or the shop is in there, they should replace all the seals, water pump, and then be done with it.
