That is a very good price, but I am comparing it to Colorado prices. Around here 96 outback, esp. with that low mileage go for the 9-10k range. I am not sure what they go for in your area. I would think even if it did have HG issues it would be a good buy. If you buy it for 3000k and even do the head gaskets and fix any other type issues, you are still under 5k for a outback. Seems like a good deal to me!!

I agree totally. I Was not sure if Subaru went electronic yet with them or not. Nissan for example you can goto their site and download them for free. I will keep an eye out on ebay for sure.

Before you do anything, take it to a power washer car wash and blast out the brakes with high pressure. Could be as simple as grime caught in the pads.

I am not sure what years will swap in, but I know I got a new(used) 6 disc changer for my subaru for 10 dollars on ebay. With mostly interstate and automatic you will get 25-28ish. You will probably not break the 30 mpg mark, but driving style comes into play also.

Yes 96 with auto is first year of 2.5, and it need premium fuel also. That price is cheap just save $$ for the headgasket job if it needs it!!

Even though the 03 was the first year of the baja, it is just a Outback with a different back end. So the new model of the Legacy was 00 so 03 or 04 would be fine.

The 2.2 in any legacy is a great motor. The only one better is the 2.2 turbo The LS will have way more optioins, ie sunroof, cruise, better stereo, etc. I am also a big fan of AWD, getting a fwd subaru is like getting a 2wd suv in my book.

You might be able to talk them down in price also since it is FWD, say things like I am also looking at a Honda or Toyota, etc. The hill holder works this way. When you are on a hill, fully depress the clutch Then press the brake to the floor all they way and let go IF it is working properly is will hold the vehicle on the hill until the clutch is released

I belive you will need a computer from the manual. The computer will not like not getting signals from the auto tranny.

I have a changer in my outback that is throwing a E3 code? I have tired to reset it but still nothing. Anyone have any experience with these? Thanks

The smell could also be cam seals or oil pump seal, they can leak and tend to go right onto the exhaust. Is the car AWD? Sounds like a nice vehicle, you will be sooooo happy going from a ford to a subaru!!!

I tore into it last night, took it apart, cleaned and lubed it. Same issue, could the passenger door cause the issue? Where can a get a FSM for a 96? I have one for my 91 but that is a layout on the locks.

Yes is works great but will only open the drivers door, it will sometimes open them all but only spartically. ??

Yea I was not ready to deal with the 2.5 yet. I am really intersted to see what happens with others on the forum who have changed thier HG before there are problems. Plus I did not want to spend the $$$ on a 00 or up with the new 2.5 motor.

Great idea on the scoop!! Yea my wife really helped out we acted like she did not like the car, but would get it if I liked it. Plus it was a honda dealership so they did not know about cold weather package and 2.2 motor, etc.

New Subaru for me!! Well I purchased a outback last night!! It is a 96 wagon with the 5spd, 2.2 motor, cold weather package, It is a one owner colorado vehicle with 76k miles. The dealer wanted $9,000.00 for it but with the help of my wife (playing good cop bad cop) we got them down to $6,000.00. The car has a couple of issues, locks acting funny and cd changer magazine stuck. But it drives like new, very tight tranny, suspension etc. I hope I can get 200k out of this one like I have on my other wagons!! I want to see how hard it is to put a new hood on it with a hood scoop?

It really depends on weight of the boat and trailer. If it is 1000 or less than I would say it would not be an issue, unless you are also going to load the heck out of you car with stuff at the same time. If you are not sure of the weight have someone tow it to a local truck stop, they have scales there and you can pay to have it weighed.

The door locks on my 96 outback do not work correctly. The drivers door works great but the rest of the vehicle works spastically. I have to either close the drivers door with it locked or press on it very hard and it will sometimes unlock the rest. I took the drivers door panel off and does not look to be any issues with any thing hanging up. Any ideas??
