I am looking at buying a 96 outback wagon. I commute 100 miles day and wife want me in a car with airbags for safety sake. I love my 91 wagon but is air-bag less. It is a 5spd 2.2 with cold weather package and factory cd changer. It is very low mileage. Is this the same drive train as my 91 Legacy? As far as trannys, diffs, etc? Are the 96 as dead reliable as the 90-94 legacies? Is the AC r-134 or r-12? Thanks

I would take it to a shop that specializes in Subaru's and have them test it before you start replacing things. My friends 98 blew its HG at 52,000 miles so do think just because low mileage it is not a HG issue. He went out and did new water pump, radiator, hoses, thero, etc and it then it still overheating. The 2.5 96-99 tend to blow them early. But you can catch it early and not cause engine issues.

Actually I think this has nothing to do with alternator or charging. When you run your ac, the compressor clutch engages and takes power from your vehicle. You have a idle sensor that is sets the idle higher when you turn on the ac. So instead of idling at 700-800 rpm you engine will sidle around 1000-1200 rpm. This is also why when you run your ac frequently you get lower gas mileage, the compressor for the ac take quite a bit of power to run. I am not sure if there is a screw on 90 Subaru's but the senor could be bad or you need to turn the ac idle screw up if there is one on a 90.

Actually this is the best Subaru site on the web by far. My father-in-law has a 2003 and so far he has not had a lick of trouble with it, but it does only have about 40,000 miles on it. There were some major issues with the Subaru 2.5 engine from 96-99, the 00 and up have a possible external head gasket leak but so far I believe these are much better than the original 2.5. These are great cars, and you will be hard pressed to find something in the 15k range as nice. Just curios, if you are a Volvo person why not buy a new V70 wagon? Richard

The dealership is insane!! 1200!!! Where do you live? Are there any local Subaru shops in the area? Independent shops are always better than dealerships. You can get the parts from eBay or local junk yards for well under $100, if not let me know. I was just at the junk yard last week and they had 2 90 legacies there. 125k is just broken in for a 2.2 legacy

Sorry for the delay. Part is called a Evaporator Thermo Switch. They are $84 new from the dealer. It is a senor that is located on the top of the heading unit right behind the glove box. Take off the glove box and look right on top of the black ducting. The unit has a resistor built into it so that the system will not freeze if it gets to cold. To do it correctly you have to pull the entire assembly out and put the end of the senor back into the exchange of the system. What I did was unplug the old, plugged in the new and secured it to the housing, and let the sensor part just sit on top of the assembly rather than it it. Has been fine for a over 6 months now. I got the sensor from a low milage unit at a junk yard.

Actually it totally depends on the state you live in. California is the harshest but you can still do an engine swap as long as you put in a motor that is the same year or newer than yours. And the same class, i.e. you cannot put a truck motor in a car, etc. So you can put a 2.2 out of a new impreza into you legacy as long as it is a new model year that your current motor.
