  1. The defroster run the AC compressor, Air conditioning take moisture out of the air allowing the defroster to de-fog the windows. This is normal.
  2. If you get a stick on the 96 you also get the 2.2, one of the best motors ever. 96 auto 2.5 96 manual 2.2
  3. Here is my story. A few years ago I was sitting in the drive through for fast food. A huge Ice sickle and massive chunk of ice fell off the drive through window bay and cracked my windshield. I walked in told the Manager and he said sorry, your problem. I talked to a lawyer friend of the family and here was the answerer. You have to prove neglect, meaning there has to be another documented incident of the same issue. So I would have gone through all the trouble of documenting and having time cost associated with a court case to win nothing, but the next person would. Unless they have had someone else have pot-hole issues, and it has been documented you are out of luck. But you still might try to contact manager/owner. They might pay it for you.
  4. What do you mean you did not have a prayer of being informed? You cannot do research yourself? You bought a vehicle expecting the manufacture to publish all the issues they have with their vehicles? You did not do outside researcher yourself before buying? When I went to purchase and outback I talked to multiple Subaru shops, surfed web pages, etc. I knew about the 2.5 issue well before I started shopping. Do not be mad a car company for not disclosing a issue, be mad at yourself for not doing proper research before purchasing the vehicle.
  5. Have you looked into this much? I am thinking the same for my 96 obw. Besides engine and computer anything else I would need??
  6. This week on stump the chumps, they had a caller tell how she had a Toyota Matrix AWD and hated it. She said it was underpowered, handled poorly, not very good fit and finish, etc. Click and Clack advised her that life was too short and to get ride of it even though she only had it for a few months. Well she took their advise and got a Subaru Outback as a replacement, and raved about it.
  7. Yes is was, look for a control box under the dash on the drivers side. Is this a manual or auto? Has nothing to do with keyless just wondering.
  8. A question about operation of the Seats. I get heat on both seats now, but is only the back section on the seat, not the seat bottom (place you put your rear). Is this correct? Is only the back (upright) portion of the seat supposed to get heat and not the bottom? Thanks
  9. I believe you can buy an aftermarket seat, but nothing like this from the factory. Yes if is a very cool option that Volvo Wagons have.
  10. I agree! I love people who buy a car then do research after the fact. Besides the HQ issue, subaru's are very reliable vehicles and they are very inexpensive to repair. Most shops charge under 1k for new HQ. PS I love you new signature!!
  11. You would not use gear oil in your auto tranny. ATF in your tranny, shockproff in front and rear diff.
  12. I agree. I am not saying the 2.5 HQ Issue is not a problem. But if you take into account all the good things about the 96-99, it is not that bad. Want another manufactures AWD Wagon?? VW/Audi/Volvo are the only other choices. And you would be paying lot more than $2k for any issues. My neighbor has a V70 AWD 98 Wagon, they have a know issue with Heater cores. 3k for the replacement, and has done it every 2 years. This is a major flaw and Volvo has done nothing about it. All things being equal 2.5 Subaru’s are still very reliable vehicles that are in-expense to run and maintain. JMO
  13. Subaru Manual Trans and front diff share fluid. So if you have a manual tranny you can use Redline 75W90NS is gear oil. You would use ShockProof™ Gear Oil for the rear axle or if auto tranny.
  14. On what vehicle?On Legacies, 4qts (3.8) manual tranny, 0.8 q Rear Diff.
  15. Good choice, you are going to thank yourself in a few years when you do not have these huge student loan payments. I have a college buddy who did what you were thinking of doing, used student loans to pay for an automobile. When you finance a deprecating asset over a long period, it is a losing proposition. No matter what a car is going to lose money and unless you can pay if off faster than it deprecates you are going to lose out.
  16. The 2.2 is a great motor, 100k is just broken in. I am not very familiar with the Impreza line. But as long as the owner has taken decent care of the motor it will got 300k easy. As far as price, look at paper or other local sources to see its value. I am not sure if it is the same in Wisconsin, but here in Colorado when the snow starts flying Subaru’s go up in price. After someone gets sucks or cannot make it in or back from work they are out looking for a vehicle that can.
  17. Yes very durable motor, good performance, good life, etc. I will take you up on the beer if I ever am out that way!!
  18. In manual trans the front gear and tranny share the same fluid. In an auto they are seperate.
  19. I was $32 dollars for 4 quarts inc. tax. Somewhere around $7.50ish per quart.
