  1. The high humidity is enough to cause the spark to jump on a marginal (high resistance) wire, particularly as you accelerate and voltage demand increases. Doesn't cost anything to try.
  2. It sounds you have a plug wire breaking down. You can fill a spray bottle with water and mist the wires at night and watch for sparks.
  3. Ha, it's in the '90 fsm too, same page. It was the only place I didn't look.
  4. Prices have risen sharply on anything heavy in the past few months.
  5. I'm sure your B-I-L has become attached to the project and has his own vision for it, but you have to go with what the boy wants to make it his own. Besides, I'm partial to anything camo, even snow camo.
  6. Yep, it sounds like your gasket might have covered up the air bleed for the main jet.
  7. I agree, Chris' wagon looks great! Have you guys figured out how to recalibrate the speedo? Any optional speedo gears out there?
  8. Oh man... you guys are making me want to mod my wagon. Great job on the autocross, especially that last run! Looks like you were holding your own on the road course too.
  9. Great looking wagon, excellent video, beautiful country, and I can see why you would want headlights!
  10. As a "new" Subaru owner I found the one that came with the car very useful and surprisingly informative. As a career mechanic, I quickly outgrew the Haynes and hunted down the Factory Service Manuals.
  11. Anyone here ever get their hands on the conditioner? Cadillac used to recommend a treatment for porosity in their aluminum engines. Turns out it was just the Bars Leak tablets. I'm wondering if Subaru's stuff is the same, or similar.
  12. I had to put an overflow bottle on my '66 HiPo 289 just to keep from getting black flagged at the starting line. Under filling the radiator, like you were supposed to do back then, just didn't make sense to me.
  13. Actually there are two ways - she said she filled it up halfway. It was 1/8 before. (not a problem lollydolly) It does sound like you filled the windshield washer bottle though lollydolly. Edit: I see you've already answered that question. I strongly recommend you check the actual level in the radiator before driving the car again. Do it while the motor is cold. Add a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water to both the radiator and to the full mark on the coolant overflow bottle. Even if you don't have any antifreeze at least fill them with water. Once your fluids are full, start the car and turn on the a/c. Both electric fans should come on (assuming you have a/c). If you don't have a/c you'll just have to get the car good and warmed up and listen for the fans to come on while watching the temp gauge to make sure it doesn't overheat first. If it starts getting hot shut the engine off and let it cool down again. The overflow bottle may empty so refill it.Restart the car and continue to warm it up again. The fans should eventually come on, though it will take longer for them to than you think it should. If all is well at this point, take your short trip then let it cool down again and recheck both levels. Top off as needed and keep a close eye on the levels every day. The level in the overflow bottle probably will take a couple topoffs as air gets purged out of the system. If at anytime it starts getting hot again, stop driving it and get it to a shop asap, even if it means having it towed in. You really should take it in to the shop anyway to have the thermostat changed at a minimum. They should also test for leaks. Edit: Good, I see that's the plan already. Good luck!
  14. That was my original thought too then decided it was set at 4 degrees ATDC for a total of 24 retarded. Good tip on the crank gears possibly being switched or the belts loose/stretched. I've been fighting a hesitation on my car too and had planned on checking the belt timing. Will add those checks to the list too.
  15. Thus the usefulness of 4wd. Also explains why my Seattle/Texas car is rust free (rub it in Dave). PS I'm enjoying the project ettev. How do you manage to grind, weld, and take photos at the same time?
  16. BUMP Shhhhhh... serious wrenching in progress (looking forward to the next set of photos).
  17. I'm interested in this too as my wagon sits too low, and with a 3AT is geared too low. I've been looking at these 165x80x13s since they are about 3/4" taller and 1/2" narrower than stock for better mileage, but a 2" lift sure opens up the possibilities. How do you plan to lift it? Got a link?
  18. Thanks, I enjoyed looking into as I wanted to know too. While the Ethos turned out to be a scam, there may be something to the Omstar 1280x from the sound of that Senator/investor . I may have to check them out next. The sad part was seeing the Unsers involved. One of my favorite all time drivers is Al Unser Sr. He was a true gentleman racer and I was fortunate to be there the day he won his 4th Indy 500, the one that tied AJ Foyt's record. I enjoyed Al Jr and his early racing career too, though feel he may have fumbled fame a bit. That's what makes me sad. I really hope someday they can get the quality sponsors the Unser name deserves and make another successful run for the trophy.
  19. I'm not so sure about that. There are tests that place the ecu in open loop that also recommend you not drive the car in that state. Suppose he has a rich condition caused by a leaking injector or pressure regulator? The cat will suffer. You may be right, but if you're not the consequences could be costly. Better to play it safe, imo.
  20. I don't know that I would condone driving it with either one disconnected for 100 miles as it's just meant to be used as a diagnostic aid. One of the reasons OB99W likely asked if the mil was flashing is because that means the ecu has detected a fault that is serious enough to do damage to your cat converters. If you unplug the O2 sensor the ecu likely won't be able to make that determination without that input. If I were in your shoes and was able to determine one or the other was truly at fault, I would do my best to find a replacement as soon as possible with as few miles driven, keeping in mind continuing to drive it could end up costing big bucks for new cats, particularly if the light is flashing.
  21. Here's a fairly current article on the history of Ethos... http://internetscamphishing.blogspot.com/2008/05/history-of-ethos-fr-and-4e-corp-hoax.html Last nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned.
  22. The owner of Ethos is in violation of a current court order for making unsubstantiated claims about a product he stole from Omstar. Note: He was just a distributor for Omstar and probably doesn't have the actual formulation...
