  1. Aren't the final gears in manual transmissions direct drive? Input shaft and output shaft turn same speed? I know it was/is on all the old American 3 and 4 speed manual transmissions I have tore apart and rebuilt.
  2. I checked today, my 89 XT-6 is tacking 2800@60mph, 3100@ 65mph and 3500rpms brings 75mph. Everything is stock. What gears do I have? FT4wd, air susp, 5 speed, locking center diff.
  3. I would think that colder air may have some effect like that. The volume of air passing throught the carb may be about the same, but the air itself would probably be carrying more oxygen due to the molecules being closer together. In a sesne, the engine is probably be running a bit leaner. I had 2 EA82 wagons, both 4x4, one carbed one SPFI, both averaged 27.5mpg. Last one started dropping to about 22, but still run the same. Found the fuel pump was rusting through and pumping the extra fuel onto the pavement.
  4. I have an 89 XT 4wd, 5 speed, with air suspension sitting behind the shed. Do not remember if it is DR or PB 4wd. Way cool on the new air suspension. My 89 XT6 is still up on air and I love it. AWD, rain snow, ice, it doesn't matter. It's all fun. One of my boys friends was being cool last winter out in the middle of our field with his big Dodge 4x4 in the snow. I stopped at the edge, hit the button for HIGH suspension, then proceded out in the field beside him. Asked him what the HE$% he was doing out in my field. LOL. Still wonder why the US XT6s didn't have a height switch. Had to rig my own.
  5. I had one of my wagons eat a couple timing belts due to idler spocket bearing failing. It would momentarily hault rotation and in turn, rip off a series of belt teeth. As I remember it, the Sube dealer wanted >$100 bux for a new idler. One afternoon at work, I had just put new bearings in a 1/2-3/4 hp electric motor and was looking at the old bearing. It was the same thing that was in the idler sprocket. Don't quote me on this, but I believe it's astandard 6203 bearing. Not too big of a deal to press in either. Cost? About 5 bux. It seems that I do remember timing marks in the 6:00 position on one or both heads timing cases. What is it, RH (as looking at front of engine) goes to the 12:00 and LH goes to 6:00 position with out the 360o rotation? Or is it both go to 12:00? "Subaru. Inexpensive and built to stay that way!" (As long as you don't have to got to the dealer. I'm sure that was in the fine print somewhere.)
  6. The frist time I changed belts in my 88 EA82, I followed the instr in the Haynes manual. I got covers back on, then decided to test run before I went further. Found I had one head off 1/2 turn on the crank. (I did the 360 rotate as specified.) Bout a year later, neighborr pulled in with an XT he got at an auction. Toook awahile to realilize what was happening, but again, found one cam off 1/2 turn. Last year, my boy bought an XT. drove it a few months and a belt went out. Knowing about the difficulties following the Haynes manual, I put in the belts, test run only to find out I had that one wrong. Summary, I put 2 in wrong, even knowing better the second time (but still trying to interpret the Hanyse manual). One other pull in the drive that someone else also got wrong. Should not hurt anything if you get one cam off 1/2 turn, but it will run terrible. Test run before putting everything back on that you would have to remove IF you got it wrong. I still think the "rotate crank shaft 360o" is a crock!. There's no reason to do this. Just put both cams in THE RIGHT PLACE to begin with and be done with it.
  7. Hey, I drive an air suspension Subaru. I'm used to that. LOL Thanks and I'll watch for future posts. I'm thinking my air compressor is acting up. It may not be starting itself up all the time when it's supposed to. I hear some clunking sounds up there and see the lights dimming in beat with those clunks. Bright, clunk, dim, bright, clunk, dim....... Still interested in the code readouts, even if the ECU does not do this suspension. I have something engine related going on too. Thanks again.
  8. Can not find the thread. Quite some time ago I saw a thread here on air suspension code read outs. I was thinking that at least one of my rear struts had sprung a major leak. Now, I'm thinking this may not totally be the case. Does anyone know if an 89 XT-6 with air suspension is capable of reading out the codes some way? If so, how is it done? Then, what do the codes mean. I remember that some do, some don't and even perhaps an older vehical may have the newer CPU installed? Any insite on this would be appreciated.
  9. I was kind of thinking the rears might be the same. Most of the conversion ideas I have heard have been using standard rears off wagons and such. Knew the fronts were more of a hastle.
  10. Are XT-6 rear air struts same as those on a XT 4cyl? Looking for some here.
  11. Careful with those vacuum lines and plastic fittings. You remember! LOL
  12. Might want to check the putor codes if you get bored. I thought someone once said that a bad connection on the the engine coolant temp sending unit can raise havoc. Could the air conditioning have anything to do with it? Don't think it was a Sube, but I remember a car that the idle would spike up just a bit before the AC compressor would kick in. Then the putor would again calculate out the correct idle speed. Just guessing for you.
  13. I had 2 Subes that had the EGR code and found the soleniod was burned out on both. (No continuity through it.) There's nothing monitoring the EGR valve itself. (Maybe on later models. I know Ford does that with an EGR position switch.). The local Sube dealer told me $133 for the EGR soleniod. I just used a $0.000001 piece of elect tape to cover the light. (Is that expensive tape?
  14. Before installing a new brian box, if possible, try to determine what that resistor is closest to in the circuit or wiring in the car. May have just been it's time, but if it's in line to an output somewhere in the car, one could smoke another. I know, tracing that down can be near impossible, but I would try and rest my mind that I think I know what it did. (Then with my luck, I would fry the next one. LOL )
  15. Now, can someone direct me to new oil pumps for the XT-6? In the $80 range even? What's the diff between the 6 pumps and the EA82s? The parts stores around here don't list much of anything for XT-6s.
