Yet another LB the coupe update:
I am unfamilar with this model of car, but someone said the dash is digital and not working. I have used a guy that is on Ebay for a rebuilt cluster and fixes digital dashes. The name is Digital Dash Solutions and he warranties his work. I am very happy with my dash, and reasonably priced! Might want to check it out.

value of a 97 outback
crash321 replied to mdjdc's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe guy must be on crack, with the cost of fixing these cars (a shop doing the repairs) you'll easily spend $1500 or more, plus a clutch, seals, t belt ,waterpump while you have everything apart. Mine has 154,000 and I have to pull the engine to reseal it next spring.

how to tell if i have a LSD
I am a new guy here and really appreciate all the information and knowledge you all have. I have a auto tech background, but have not been practicing for a while now unless you count my own vehicles (mostly GM). I have a 98 OBW with the 2.5 5 speed. This is my first roo and have loved it so far. How can you tell you have a LSD. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks so much guys.

Considering Buying a 2002 Outback
crash321 replied to HalNineThousand's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI myself have a 98 outback with 151,000 on the clock, Since it has gotten cold out, I just started getting the piston slap sound. It gets louder as I accelerate but disappears after about 5 miles. If you are still hearing it after the engine is warmed up, you may have a different problem with the car. You should probably drive the car for at least 1/2 hour min, that way you can get a feel for the car and know for sure if any other problems crop up the owner my be trying to hide. Timing belt at an indy shop was under 200.

humming/whining coming from passenger side front
I would agree with wheel bearing. Non serviceable bearings have an awful habit of showing up bad and showing the signs you are talking about. One day there will be no noise and the next you swear you hit the nieghbors cat.....over and over again. If you hear it in the front, it is easy to diagnose. Just find a safe road and load up the suspected bearing going about 30 to 40 mph, a gruff noise from the loaded side means bad bearing. What can happen sometimes where a bearing starts to fail is that it will be noisy at first but once it warms up it will quiet down. I would start saving for a new bearing. good luck!
