  1. Thank you GD new water pump, thermostat, intake manifold gaskets, upper/lower Rad hoses and new PCV, subaru brand coolant All is cool now to find a weber
  2. I had the same problems as kabarakh with my EA81 hatch i thought it was called dieseling i couldn't figure it out, local shop helped me out: "had to replace the remote wire on the Voltage regulator" in-wire fuse
  3. Why is there no overflow bottle??? Will there will always be an air pocket in the radiator???
  4. all back together now after waiting for the intake manifold gaskets from the dealership i filled the radiator with coolant 1)how can i get coolant into the upper part of the engine or should i just start it up and wait for the t-stat to open???
  5. definitely glad i did not step into headgasket land right now OH the "Elite Master of the Subaru" has taught you well my son:lol:
  6. finally got to the intake manifold today and after a couple hours of hose removing i found the culprit to my white smoke upon start-up
  7. thanks GD i will get at those manifold gaskets this weekend and order some new ones right now. if i start breaking bolts i will just have to tap-screw them out??? Right???
  8. O.K. so the intake manifold gaskets can cause the white smoke upon start up??? radiator fan works, but runs for a certain amount of time then shuts off even its its not cooled off, then turns back on again??? 1) never overheats if driving, just only when idling for a LONG time (which is rare) 2) upon start up idles high and will not step down on its own, i have to rev and help it idle down. sometimes this is when she climbs past the normal temp. 3) the other thing is when she's cold there is a lag in the accelerator, push the pedal and she pauses then engages with the rpm dropping then climbing, its been getting worse??? when warm there is hardly any lag but still a little??? 4) i have not been driving this beast lately due to these problems but have been fixing random issues. Currently i am doing the cooling system with a new t-stat and water pump installed i would like to finish this job correctly and hopefully this information will help you help me
  9. YES, I FINALLY HAVE A GARAGE WARM, COZY, WARM, COZY 1985 GL Hatchback 4WD 150,000 miles does overheat only if at idle for a while coolant is slowly going somewhere white smoke upon start up only 1) where can i get the correct headgaskets for this EA81 OHV??? i saw a thread where GD had sandpaper on a level surface and resurfaced his own heads. and i feel up to the task. especially since i dont have to remove engine. 2) BUT how can i be sure these Heads will go another 150,000 miles, what should i look for. or should i get re-build heads???? 3) what kind of prep and methods of surfacing to the short block are required to preform this head gasket job??? 4)what other gaskets will i need
  10. 85 GL hatchback EA81 rear drums, shoes, springs, and wheel cylinders, even had to do the brake line. Fuel pump and filter riveted sheet metal to the inside rear wheel wells, rubberized finished the t-stat and water pump but now deciding if i should do the Headgaskets??? 150,000 miles or so
  11. 1996 2.5 5-speed 350,000 miles engine re-build @175,000 Plugs/wires in great condition, PCV is new, Coil pack, air filter, and fuel filter is 1 year old, idle air control valve cleaned recently as well as SEAFOAM through intake, and in the oil to free sticky lifters. oil changed religiously lately i feel a loss of power up hills or full throttle, like a vacuum or fuel problem (slight whistle) then on a 150 mile round trip, blessed ol subaru took a nap that day, just 2 miles from destination. came around a corner, full acceleration to climb hill and i could feel the hesitation(slight whistle) and then no pedal response. almost stalled, but when i try to press accelerator she dies. started right up afterwards, but when i press accelerator she just dies Please help, how do i check throttle position sensor, Mass air flow sensor, i have a multi-meter but someone is going to have to help me out on this one. i'm ready for the 2.2 swap, just want to rule out fuel issues before i continue
  12. Just replaced front brake caliper, rotor, pads on a 1985 GL hatch 147,000 miles 1.8 4WD Everything fits like a glove and bleed lines Brake power is great, but now after overnight sit, fluid reservoir is almost empty. No leaks at the tires. Before touching brakes I fill up, under MC looks like leakage but could be my spillage? When car is off and brake pedal depressed, it does not get totally stiff as I think it should? I will wash everything and try to pinpoint the leak Any info on this brake system much appreciated Front Calipers are the style with parking brake Rear drums

  19. 85 EA81 hitachi 146,000 miles i'm having some backfiring woes at cold idle when i press the throttle- there is a pause, drop in rpm's, then it kicks in with pat-dat-dat-dat most times I let er warm up, but occasionally i have to start and go this is when it really backfires, upon releasing the throttle to shift once warm no backfiring at all gas tank replaced year and half ago fuel filter one year ago air filter, sparks, plugs, and turned up the idle slightly one year ago i was getting 25 mpg now i'm at 23 mpg but prob from the hills i'm mounting every day please help
  20. the easiest way is to wire a starter button($5.00) to the starter hide the switch like everyone said but have that switch hooked up to another somewhere else you can hide this very well by having the first switch next to your seat adjust handle, adjust seat when you enter place key in and turn on, now have the real starter button on the floor. passengers wont even notice i had a 91 VW fox that had the infamous VW ignition problem so i wired the starter with this set up:banana:
