Two Subaru specific questions
Olnick replied to Kenneth1948's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXA small correction: ANY Subaru engine after '96 is interference. In other words, interference design started with the '97 MY.

Please help! is it obd1 or obd2? How to know
Olnick replied to Bob Nieuwsma's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI feel your plight, Bob. If the guy at the yard is pleasant and cooperative and if the engine is still in the Imprezza (or if the car's body still exists)--ask him to go see if it has an OBD2 port! (It should be under the dash, to the left of the steering column.) Simplistic I know--but that's how my mind works! Good luck.

multiple issue with 1990 subaru loyale non turbo
Olnick replied to kirbeh's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'm not making an issue of it. But he'll get more help if he asks the question in Old Gen. Sorry if I sounded like I was complaining!

Questions about 96 outback 2.5 to 2.2 swap?
Olnick replied to Bob Nieuwsma's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy '95 is OBD2, but it's a Legacy. Call the yard and ask them to check.

Questions about 96 outback 2.5 to 2.2 swap?
Olnick replied to Bob Nieuwsma's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWelcome to USMB, Bob. You've obviously done your homework--and made a good choice. If that '95 EJ22 engine has just 96k on it, it's hardly broken in! You'll be good for another 150-200k miles. Plus it's the best engine Subaru ever made in my opinion. Non-interference and "bulletproof!" A little preventive maintenance and attention to details and you'll be golden.

Time to buy a timing belt component set, but which one?
Olnick replied to stift040's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOoops, sorry! I was looking for a '96 EJ22. But just to confirm, if you go to their website you should be able to enter your specifics. Good luck.

Time to buy a timing belt component set, but which one?
Olnick replied to stift040's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'm looking into a timing belt kit myself. Best deal appears to be Mizumo Auto, on e-bay for $158 with free shipping. Includes Mitsuboshi belt (a quality product), Aisin water pump with a Subaru quality gasket, GMB idlers and good (brown) cam & crank seals. http://www.ebay.com/itm/90-97-EJ18-EJ22-Subaru-Impreza-Legacy-1-8-2-2L-AISIN-Water-Pump-Timing-Belt-Kit-/221191947117?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item338011436d&vxp=mtr I've used Theimportexperts in the past with good results too!

Impreza 1996 clutch replacement by pulling engine out
Olnick replied to Tremmor's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCongratulations Tremmor! Good going! Since you're already in there might be advisable to replace the plastic baffle plate with a metal one anyway. Good luck!

99 Forester Automatic Transmission won't go above first
Olnick replied to Bfats25's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXJust to clarify--directions on a vehicle are properly given from the point of view of the driver sitting behind the wheel. So in a U.S. car "left" means the driver's side and "right" means passenger's side! Good luck. Keep asking questions here--hopefully the solution is something simple.

Anyone want to install a 22 in a '98, or know a shop who will?

EJ22 Water Pump Question
Olnick replied to Olnick's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThanks all--really appreciate the input. I think I'd feel comfortable using the Aisin gasket. By the way, I trust the Gates brand and would probably go with it. But everywhere I checked--amazon, rockauto and ebay--the price was significantly higher than Mizumo's top kit.

EJ22 Water Pump Question
Been looking on the web for a timing belt kit for a '96 EJ22. Mizumo Auto has a premium kit ($158.71 with free shipping) that includes a Mitsuboshi belt and an Aisin water pump with gasket. They told me the W/P gasket is "thin metal, coated." Anyone used one? Is it equal quality to the Subaru gasket we'd normally buy at a dealership?

Newbie from MN checking in
Welcome to USMB, BBF. The 2.2 is a wonderful, reliable engine--just be aware that after the '96 model year it became an interference engine. Be sure to keep up with scheduled timing belt/idler/water pump replacement.

A Tribute to a Subie
Eric found his "new" car--just what he wanted, a '96 Outback with EJ22 and 5-speed tranny! Needs a bit of work but overall very solid and runs/drives well. Thanks for all your good thoughts everyone. Here are some pix from the seller's Craigslist ad:

1991 Subaru Liberty Loses Power Under Load
Olnick replied to libertyherb123's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMarvel's MMO is great for loosening up sticky valves, stopping the "tick-of-death!" But I wouldn't leave it in permanently. Dump a bottle in your crankcase 50 or 100 miles before you plan to change the oil, then drive like normal. I've seen it work. Good luck.

A Tribute to a Subie
Thanks Katie--and everyone--for your kind thoughts. Funny how we get so attached to a utilitarian hunk of metal, glass & rubber! Main thing, Eric's okay and he's on the verge of acquiring a nicer, newer Subaru. (Correction: Not necessarily "nicer," just different.) Pictures soon JesZeK! Aloha, Nick

Intermittent electrical problem
Olnick replied to sario's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYeah, have driven the North Cascades Highway (SR 20) and it is absolutely beautiful up there. No snow flakes but we had hail pounding our skylights a month ago--have lived here 50 years and that was the first time I ever heard that!

Is this a pretty good deal?
Olnick replied to Wallis_93's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFYI, the '96 2.2 is non-interference.
