  1. Hello everyone, first time posting so bear with me! Last winter I bought a 1990 Loyale 4WD Turbo with 55k in just about perfect condition. I'm the 2nd owner, been garaged its whole life. It did have some problems with overheating which led to me sinking a few grand into it to replace all engine gaskets, water pump, and radiator, but other than that it's run like a total dream and has been consistently maintained throughout its life. I'm curious to see about what money I might be able to get out of it if I sell. Between buying it and the repairs I spent around $5k total, and based on the research I did before buying it seems like an extremely reliable and desirable ride. Any help or input as far as helping figuring out a solid value would be much appreciated!
  2. Hello all, new to the forum here. I have recently purchased a 2000 Forester and I am looking for advice on good lift/tire combinations. I really like the look of a lifted forester, but would like somewhere to start. I have looked on other postings but all of the images are no longer available. Any advice would be great! Thanks!
  3. My husband and I own a 2006 Baja w/ turbo. It has run great for a while, has some past issues that we thought were resolved shortly after purchase. We were currently debating on trading in for a newer subie that fits our needs better but have hit a major snag. It started throwing codes at us. We have gotten the PO303 code with no luck chasing down the issue. We changed the spark plugs, ran great for a few days, then code repeat. Change coil, ran fine for a few days, code repeat. Replaced cyl3 injector, ran good for a day. Then once again, code repeat. We have chased every rabbit hole we can think of and it seems to fix the problem for a very short period then poof, back to square one. My husband even tried unhooking the exhaust to to see if maybe we were catching the code from something in the cad converter. No luck. Now its back to doing exactly what it did when we first got the code. Rough idle, but has now acquired the problem of dying out when the clutch is depressed..... Any ideas or approaches you folks can think of? We dont have the money to dump a lot into this trying to chase down every possibility, but unless we have it running well, we have nothing to trade in to get even close to getting what we were after. Questions, comment, ideas are so very welcome and this point.... we have become extremely stressed over this issue.....
  4. So I am looking to buy another Subaru to replace my current daily driver and I need advice from experienced drivers who drive a Subaru as their daily driver. I'm stuck between 2 used Subarus. One is a 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i with 53,000 miles and the other is a 2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5GT with 97,000 miles. Now I'm not sure what I should be more concerned about, the year or the miles. I own a 2002 STi but it is a weekend car for me as i want to keep it in good condition. I take good care of my cars so I think both cars would last much longer than other cars but I need advice from drivers who are more experienced than me. I also created this topic for anyone else that needed advice on a Subaru purchase. Feel free to post
  5. What car would you buy? Criteria: $10,000 - $12,000 to spend (maximum of 15k if worth it) AWD (west Michigan roads get pretty awful in winter) Cargo space enough for two short and thin people to sleep in 20+ mpg highway Must survive 4-6 years of daily driving + light "two track" offroading Do I need to worry about rumors of reoccurring head gasket leaks? How do I avoid them? What model? What year and what mileage would you aim for? Hello friends, I just registered with your fine internet community to receive some advice. Pretend you're me, complete with a long and pointy red beard. You finally payed off your 2008 Wrangler Rubicon 4-door and want to either trade-in or sell it privately. You know you could get at least 12-15k for it. You could get closer to 20k if you spent 3k in cosmetic and minor mechanical repairs. So you figure you have a comfortable 12k to work with in your quest to find a AWD car with enough cargo space to accommodate a double size memory foam pad for you and your smokin' hot petite wife to "sleep" on when camping. You're just 5' 8" and that's alright because that's above the average male height in Ireland so all of those 6ft+ tall Americans that made you feel so insecure in High School are just a bunch of freaks with disproportionately sized genitalia being most probable. You would know because you do nursing work and have had intimate contact with hundreds of samples. You just remembered to stay on point and that you probably just crossed the line between a lighthearted request for help and an obnoxious attempt to be funny. You decide to make bullet points for the people that chose wisely and skipped your paragraph of nonsense and narcissism. Thanks for reading and thanks in advance to anyone that may reply! Serious and sarcastic replies are welcome. Nothing wrong with a little fun.
  6. Greetings! I have a 2007 2.5i Ltd. with 95K miles on it. I'm a DIYer interested to learn about what to watch out for on this car, what preventative stuff to do, and what the essential resources are (forums and other sites, parts sites, manuals, ...). I'm starting with swapping in a new passenger axle (torn boot) and doing a timing belt service (got the axle and a timing belt kit from FCP). Thank you for any advice! Best, Mark
  7. Hello everyone! I was wondering if I could get some advice before I begin my next project. My intake manifold gasket seems to be worn out, there is a whistle coming from just behind the ac compressor, when I spray maf cleaner in the area the engine jumps up in rpms, so I have it narrowed down to the gasket.. My car has 258,000 miles and most of the parts are still stock,I have been replacing things as they die. But now i want to be proactive and help myself in the long run and was hoping you guys could help While I am taking the car apart for the intake manifold gasket is there any other parts i should replace or clean?? Fuel filter, fuel injectors, vacuum houses, or any seals that I should retouch ? I want to take care of any parts that are known for failure while I'm in there:] advice would be great, thank you! 93 LEGACY 2.2l 257,000 miles, no egr valve.
  8. Hey guys, I'm new to this and am hoping that I am posting in the right place. After a 6 long years in College and too much time and money spent, I have started taking Automotive Technician classes at a local community college. I absolutely love it and I really want to start a career as soon as I can. However, I have no experience besides in the classroom (there is a garage too). I know I'll have to start at the bottom (oil changes, changing light bulbs, cleaning the shop, ect.), but I'm trying to see how long I will have to be at that level. Ideally, I would like to become at an apprentice, but I haven't had much luck getting in contact with service/shop managers. I talked to one at a Mercedes dealership, very briefly, and he said that he wouldn't put me on his oil change team until I spent about a year basically detailing cars there, and then it would be another year or longer doing oil changes before I would actually get to work in the shop with a mechanic. I have always liked Subaru's and am very interested in starting a career there. I have left messages/emails with a few managers, but have not heard anything (its been about a week). Does anyone have any suggestions of where to begin? What things are shop managers looking for in entry level mechanics that could help me stand out? If you work in a shop, how did you start out? If it helps, I just turned 24, I have a very strong work ethic, determined, kinesthetic learner, not afraid to ask questions, want to get my hands dirty, and catch on to things very quickly. Sorry for going on and on. Pretty much all of my friends and family have desk jobs so I'm kinda on my own in this hunt. Thanks in advance for all your help.

  10. Hi; I have a 1984 turbo wagon with an automatic trans. The trans shifts and seems to work like it should, but I have a bad crunching and vibration when the car accelerates. The former owner had new axels installed so not them. I pulled the axels and the splined stubs appear to be loose, maybe something in the front diff? I also have a 1986 turbo sedan for a parts car, dual range 5 speed, that I would like to install into the wagon. Has anyone done a changeover like this? Would the later clutch pedal and cable work on the older car? Just from measuring none of the crossmembers look like they will work, so I guess that I will have to fabracate my own. The rear gears are the same 3:70's, but the sedan has LSD in it. Any ideas, input would really be appreciated.

  16. I bought my 1st Subaru this past december ('12) with 220,000 miles. ($4300) I had it checked by my mechanic and didn't have any major problems, other than timing belt had no record of replacement. I had the timing belt and water pump replaced. ($1000) I changed the oil in late dec with no issues present. mid january I overheated. assuming I had just lost coolant, I refilled it and continued driving within a few days it happened again and I took it in to my mechanic who told me I had a leaky upper radiator hose. I replaced it that next weekend (3 days max) and after I was done replacing it checked my oil. I saw a green tint and a slime that I have since heard called a "milkshake". I grounded it and it has sat almost 2 months. I have endeavored to replace my head gaskets. I have removed everything above the engine block and removed the dual exhaust below. I drained my oil and it was terrible. it really did look exactly like a chocolate shake. I'm at a decision point and I'm looking for advice. I really can't back away from this car now, I have to much invested. I can either continue and replace the gaskets like originally planned, but I'm afraid I ruined my bearings due to the overheating with bad lubrication. or I could spend the $2000-$2500 to have my engine bored out and have the gaskets replaced or I could find an engine like this one http://www.gearheadengines.com/CrateEngines for $3300 Any advice?
