New belt is a wise decision (whichever belt you use!!!) EJ22 is quite straightforward and relatively easy, but you should probably allow more time so you can thoroughly check out the front end while you have it opened up: Tensioner & idlers, reseal oil pump, maybe cam & crank seals, water pump (?). Thanks for the observations guys. My theory is that they are the same belt, that Subaru "chanced it" (gave it a different part number to placate the Golden State officialdom) and ultimately found that the belts were just fine with the longer change interval! Cynical maybe, but that's my .02!

Idle curiosity: Does anyone know for a fact that the "California" 105k belt really differs in design/composition from the old standard 60k one? :-\

+1 to what Gloyale said. A properly remanufactured engine is going to cost a lot more than $900. Take a look at CCR's site for more info: http://www.ccrengines.com/index.html JDM is often not as good as it sounds, at least in my eyes. Study up on them before you jump in. To be safe, any used engine, JDM or pull-and-pay, would need a front end rebuild, re-sealing and tuneup before installing. So be sure to figure that into the cost. An EJ22 is an excellent option, perhaps not to everyone. But I think it's the best engine Subaru ever made!

First year of the Impreza. Not interference! EJ18 (1.8L) engine and, from what I've heard, just as rugged and dependable as the EJ22. Should be easy to work on. Good luck.

+1 to what Fairtax said. Of course I have to admit I'm not a big fan of lowered cars anyway. Your car really is a "Cutie" as it is, I think it has a nice stance and the new wheels really make it sparkle. Just my .02!

Depends. How low do you want to go?

If the problem persists through 4 different starters, then it's NOT a starter problem! Have your battery tested and check the output of the alternator. Clean and tighten the battery cable connectors. Check the cables/lines to the starter. And, yes, shut off lights, radio, a/c, etc. every time!

That means your mind is in the right place!

The OP said it's a 2.5, john. I believe all EJ25 dohc engines are interference.

Maybe a dumb question, but how's the condition of your ATF?

What do you mean by "broke off the crankshaft?" Can you describe the present condition of the harmonic balancer, the crankshaft snout, the key and keyway slot?

It's on the crossover pipe--from the passengers side of the engine, look below the IACV valve. Does anyone else think this might be caused by a faulty coolant temperature sensor?

My '95 Legacy has a Nippon Denso starter and I got new contacts from Subaru. I believe Toyota used the same unit, perhaps others too. Or try an auto-electric shop. One suggestion--if possible remove your old contacts and take them with you. They come in at least 3 different configurations (I got lucky on the third try!)
