Headlight bulb socket melted
One of my headlights stopped working a couple of days ago. When I took out the old bulb I realised that the filament was still intact... I then looked at the socket and the middle connector's plastic is totally melted away! Does anyone know the part number and a place to get it from? Any idea on price? Is it dificult to install the wires to the socket? BTW the other socket is in perfect shape and I use 100/80W xenon bulbs. Thanks.

Basic oil change question.
applegump replied to photo2001's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'd say it has NO effect for six months. I wouldn't start worrying about the oil breaking down until about 12 months, definately not before.

Are snow tires mandatory with a Suby?
applegump replied to captainehh's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'd prefer to be in a FWD or RWD car with snow tires than an AWD car with summer tires.

snow chains on Outback LL Bean wagon
applegump replied to dave_leitner's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'd reccomend you look at winter tires before looking for chains. It is quite amazing how much more grip winter tires get on snow/ice compared to normal "all season" tires.

CV Joints ???
applegump replied to Chip's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI got a rebuilt CV joint/axle and its PERFECT (after 40k miles)! Mine was rebuilt by Subaru and it costs SO MUCH less:banana: than a new one. Definately happy with that purchase.

Euro spec headlamp upgrade for 95-97 Legacy?
applegump replied to hiergehts's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAs far as I know, the Euro spec Subarus all have glass headlights(If I see one I'll check to make sure.). However, I don't know how much better they are for seeing at night. About the upgrade or special edition options, I doubt there were any as they all look alike. Hope this helps.

To any Legacy owners
applegump replied to urabus1995's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have to agree with northguy on most things excpet the the oil. I would use at least semi-synthetic if not synthetic for ALL fluids (motor, gearbox, front and rear diff). I would do an oil change interval of 7,500 to 10,000 km. I know that many say 4000 km but thats with regular dino oil from the past. There have been various oil studies which have found that modern synthetics hold out for much longer than 10 k km (over 15k miles) so you should be fine with 10k km intervals unless you do some serious racing and 1km trips all the time. BTT welcome to the board

ATF spec
applegump replied to patcal's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOne last thing, nowadays you can't get API SG or Dexron II anymore because they have been superceeded.

ATF spec
applegump replied to patcal's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXsetright, do you still use API SG oil in the engine? My '90 Legacy owner's manual states to use API SG but nowadays, modern oils are SJ, SL. Dexron III is an imrpoved (better) version of II, its as simple as that. It has better heat stability etc. If it were incompatible it would say on the bottle and probably be called something different, like ATF TQ. Take brake fluid, Dot 4 is better than Dot 3 and compatible, just better heat range.

ATF spec
applegump replied to patcal's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDexron III is the current standard of ATF and I would definately use that and not buy/use Dexron II. Dexron III is fully compatible with II but much better.

Subaru Paint
applegump replied to CROSSTBOLT's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMany Euro manufacturers use water based paints for environmental reasons, which is good..... but the quality isn't as high as "normal" paint yet.

The 2.5 engine seems to have head gasket problems, so look at the service history to see if it has been fixed.

Radiator concearn
Lately I have been loosing coolant somewhere, I can hear lots of hissing (coolant hitting something very hot and evaporating) after driving but I haven't had time to crawl underneath yet. Now, when I was refilling the coolant into the radiator directly, I discovered something worrying . The cap was covered with black grease like substance, like the kind you find on the outside of the oil pan or engine, not very greasy but more muddy consistance almost with small particles. It didnt seem disolved, just sticking to the radiator and cap(I hope you get what I mean). The first inch of the radiator hole was also covered. Now im worried :boohoo: . Anyone know whats wrong? Blown head gasket? Thanks PS Im at 136k miles. No other reduction in power or any other abnormalities on the car.
