Cheap, easy, fun things to do to your Sooby :D
rxleone replied to rxleone's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Would also love to see this. The bumperless wagon look is definitely a winner. I'm also going to rip out the undercoat in the rear compartment in my wagon where the spare tire would go in anything less then a Sooby, POR-15 it and turn it into a mobile cooler with beers and ice Oh, any by the way Markus, is that snorkel rainpipe? Because if it is then that is sweet lol -
So I know that you can rip the front shafts out and cruise around in RWD, but is it safe? I've heard conflicting stories about it; some say the diffs can handle just about anything, others say that they'll blow in about two months. Anyone actually done this and has any experience on it? Parts cars around here are a little hard to find and I'd love to try it for a bit, but don't really want to blow my diff up

Awesome man, welcome Where are you from? I've only heard them called Leones in Aus and NZ...would be sweet to get another ea82 wheeling down here! Def go for the EA82, if not EA81, getting hard to find down here now though... and D/R definitely. Good luck!

Was wondering if any of you guys had any sweet little tricks or tips for cool things to do to your sooby? I'm 18, student, and broke but love working on my old girl, but with limited funds, I find it a bit hard... Anything would be appreciated; engine, trans, body, interior, anything. Hopefully we can get this thing snowballing and keep it in here permanently

Depends how much time you have on your hands, and how much said time is worth. Over here in NZ, it'd probably be worth more to just sell the engine then the entire car. But then you've got to drop the engine (nicely too, no hack jobs or its not worth anything and you just get problems on your hands). Then theres everything else. Pulling the gearbox, shocks, etc. Can be a pain, especially if you only have limited time. Of course, its a good learning curve, and can be fun too, but if you just want the car gone, its easier to sell it.

82 subaru gl ideas?????
rxleone replied to creswellhick's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That thing is freakin sweet man! Looks like my bro's Subaru "Rogue" (DL turbo GT-AT with the roof cut off from behind the b pillars) lol only more awesome! -
Its an '89 Omega DL, ea82, carbed, 5sp d/r wagon. Would def be keen, but would my wagon have the tach cable for your dash? How can I tell?
-
Everyone in NZ seems to call them Soo-Barr-Ruu, even though they should be saying soobaroo! lol
-
Yeah I know, deliberatly went out to find a small one so I didn't look like some idiot boyracer only cost me $25 new as well, and its pretty spot on!
-
I would undo my dash and show you how I wired mine, but the bloody thing is such a birds nest you'd probably cringe at the sight of it. Note to self: Rewire the whole bloody thing. Probably near a damn fire hazard, to be honest. The memory cable was quite easy; I'm not too sure if the fuse panel is on the drivers side or not, but basically I just undid all the panelling around it,unbolted the fusebox, found the open-door light fuse, took out the terminal holding it in there and wired it in. I was in a bit of a rush at the time though, so maybe one of the other guys could tell you whether its a good thing to do or not. It's been like that in mine for a good few months now with no problems.

Hey guys, over here in NZ with my DL wagon. Came out of a New Zealand factory as a Subaru Omega DL (which is basically a Loyale DL wagon I believe?) Anyways, its got an odd dash. Any of you ever seen one like this? 220kph is about 135mph, which is pretty damn quick for a DL...needless to say it's never hit that spot....only about 160 Weird? I've even wired up a little tach to make sure I'm not over the redline when I'm out wheeling Yay or nay?
-
When I did it I couldn't find a permanent memory cable, so I just undid the fuse box under the dash, found a wire that was on permanently (turned out to be the door light) and wired that sucker up. Perhaps you could do the same on a accessory wire? The low voltage wire sounds suspect. Have you put an actual multimeter onto it and checked the current? Could pay to. John

Hey guys, went wheeling the other day (well more like fieldthrashing/4wd drifting:D) and was basically hydroplaning down this muddy as hell road when I got drifted right into a bank! Stupid stupid idea that was I tell ya :-\ Hit it front on, picked the car up on the two left hand wheels and basically turned it around. Now whenever I turn right my left wheel sounds like its scraping against something. Metal-on-metal kind of sound... I jacked it up and inspected for damage, but can't see anything. I have a gut feeling that I may have done a wheel bearing, but it seems to drive fine and theres no more play or noise then normal(for a 220,000km vehicle) Anyone ever done anything similar and had this happen? It's a 1989 DL wagon, EA82 Carb.

Converting from an auto choke to a manual one
rxleone replied to rxleone's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Might just be easier to import one from the states perhaps? -

Ha, maybe, but $1300 NZ is pretty freaking expensive for a few more ponies! -

Oh okay, I'll keep an eye out for some cheap ones to rebuild. We've got Redline stuff here too, but to get a carb out of them and an adaptor....it's worth more then the car -

Thanks guys, you seem to know your stuff! GD, do you know what Weber carb you'd need for a conversion and any adapters etc? -
Windshield spray does not work - Loyale
rxleone replied to viceversa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Don't quote me on this, but I think I may have seen a fuse under the dash that controls the circuit on the washer pump. Check under there. -

But they're so damn expensive! And to be honest, I'm broke. Lol. Unless they come off some sort of car that had it from factory that I could pull? -
All the Leones I've had seem to run awfully cold. Mine barely sits 2mm above cold when I'm out crusing at 100kph, but leave it at a standstill and it'll shoot up to two thirds within about 10 minutes. I put it down to air cooling. I'm still very surprised at how cold my old girl runs though. I took her about 400km south a few weeks ago, stopped to check her out and not only was the radiator cold you could put your hand directly on the engine block and not get burnt. Runs like a dream

Have You Used Quinton Hazell Parts?
rxleone replied to Quidam's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Twelve Dollars? Thats a steal!! Repco Brake Pads in Northern Arizona eh? Interesting. We don't even have them over here anymore, just Ferodo & TRW (Lucas) pads. Both seem to be good. -
Doesn't really take much to hold them in place eh? Might have to do mine at some stage as well! Can you flick me those part numbers there mate? I get a discount through Subaru dealers around here

I work at a local car parts store (Repco) and we sell Quinton Hazel pumps. I'm not sure where they're from, but all the local garages around the area use them, with very little problems. In fact, I don't think I've ever warrantied one. Bottom line:I'd use one.
